I have read mixed reviews about the education received at BG Tech. Is it an overall failure as a choice for a tech school or just certain areas of training? I have a sibling who was going to start in the fall, but he may rethink his decision. He was going to use BGTech as a starting point before transferring to WKU. Before my parents blew a ton of money on WKU, my brother wanted to be sure that he could focus on college. His emphasis will be on engineering and UK was his school of choice, but he is not a truly devoted student (smart, but not devoted). Any feedack would be appreciated!

I havent finished so I can't say if it will be a complete waste or not. HOWEVER, tell him to get all his Gen. Ed. done there. It transfers and the smaller classes make it a whole lot easier. I failed Microbiology (not D an F) 2x at WKU, transfered to the tech school and made an A in the class. Same info, same book. At WKU there were 150 students and the teacher barely had time to finish the lecture, much less clarify. At BGTC w/a smaller class, he could get the same amount of lecture in but actually answer questions. PLUS he taught the lab, not some grad student.

I taught at BGTC for years. I would NOT send my child there. They even offered free classes to faculty dependents and I chose to pass on the deal. Read the above post...HappyMomma failed a class 2 times at WKU and got an A the first time taking it at BGTC with the same textbooks?????? If you want an almost guaranteed degree then BGTC is the place to go, but if you want to earn it and feel good about your accomplishment, I'd recommend WKU or maybe even Draughons. I can't tell you how many times I got chewed out for failing too many students. If I failed the ones that didn't show up, I'd have to pass the ones that did just so my pass fail ratio was in line. BGTC insiders call it FTE (Full Time Enrollment ratio) and if faculty can't produce enough income to maintain your class and feed the next upper level class the following semester, you're screwed. So faculty have to do what it takes to make that happen even if it means passing people who don't need to pass. Trust me, the HR folks in the Bowling Green area are all to familiar with BGTC graduates. If they do offer you a job, it will pay far less than your WKU counterpart because they will be taking a chance with you. Believe it or not, HR people do not like firing people and would rather hire the best candidate on the first try. You'll be hard pressed to find a HR person willing to give you a shot at a good position when there are so many WKU folks out there more qualified and have proven that they were not just looking for the easy degree. Hope this helps you make the right decision.

In Response to the above poster....Even though it sounds like I was given an A at BGTC, I did earn it. I busted my ass (wasn't working a fulltime job that semester either), and the teacher actually gave me the time of day to help. I'm sure that there are cases that are different, just not mine. At WKU the Micro instructer told me point blank that she didn't have time to answer my questions and I would either need to read the book more thoroughly or get a tutor.

By no means have I flown thru either college. I am not a 4.0 student. I ask for help when I need it and unfortunatley the professors at WKU weren't willing to give me the time of day.

Either way BGTC is a bad financial investment. I've been there done that got the t-shirt. Take it from someone that was there 9 years. I watched KATI go from selective enrollment to open enrollment, accepting everyone that applied. I've sat in meetings where the discussion was how the school could recruit students that could barely read, then how to provide them with a path to a college degree. Its apparent that 18 and 19 year olds that can't read at a 4th grade level have some type of learning disability, though these guys have the same credentials as everyone else from bgtc. Whatever happened to rewarding the ones that stood out from the rest. At bgtc, everyone is the same, whether you can write your name or not. I don't mean to disrespect those with a learning disability, I just wouldn't want to be considered one of them by affiliation.

The nursing school BGTC Glasgow campus in Glasgow is awesome! They have an extreme pass rate on the licensure exam. This is the SAME test for everyone all over. They have an LPN and an RN program. Western is three times the cost and you get the same RN degree. An RN is an RN as long as you can pass the NCLEX at the end. They really teach you what you need to know. I can not speak for all the programs, but the nursing campus instructors really care about teaching the students what they need to know. Check the pass rate. It is one of the best pass rates in Kentucky.

The RN program is selective and they really watch who they accept. They realize they need a high pass rate or the program will fall apart. The school has been there for 50 years and have been putting out wonderful and competent nurses for years

I am trying to get in the program and I heard there is a waiting list. I know someone in the program now and they had to have excellent grades to get in. I am not sure how many they will accept but I have my fingers crossed.

You're right. The nursing program in Glasgow is excellent. It's almost like a seperate entity form BGTC even though it shares the same name. The nursing program has its own accreditation and I know Jimmy Isenberg runs the place right. But BGTC in Bowling Green and Franklin should not be considered an option for those that are serious about their academic future.

Okay! I do not know about Franklin and Bowling Green. Just wanted to clarify that I am in no way putting WKU down either because I have taken all pre requisites there. They are 3 times the cost and I will go to BGTC nursing school if possible.

I'm with KCTCS system office. We teasingly call BGTC Hodge Podge after the college president Nathan Hodges. He has done nothing good during his tenure. I'd hold off until his replacement takes over. Not sure when that will be but hopefully soon. I guess the cats out of the bag now lol.

Are you the same poster that had commented previously about BGTC?(Another thread had an ex-employee saying the same thing.) I am hoping that his app to WKU was accepted. I cannot imagine my parents spending the money at BGTC for a substandard education. I graduated from WKU and don't even use my degree now, but it was very helpful in getting my first job out of college. I don't want my brother to start out his college education and it be a complete wash/waste of time.

I don't know, theres a few of us 'ex employees' on here and some current employees. All of the ones that I know who frequent this board feel about the same way but one or two are more vocal about it. A couple of them help plan and build KATI in the late 80's and early 90s and are not happy with the way things have turned out. One of the things that bother the old timers is that they no longer recruit full time faculty. They hire adjunct to replace retiring faculty which saves them money on benefits. The school suffers by having a revolving door for people to come in and try their hand at teaching. Some gen ed faculty come from Western but the program specific courses are being taught by regular joes in the field. By the time you figure out an idividual isn't a very good teacher, a semester or two has passed and 100 people have been short changed on their training. Don't get me wrong, there are some very talented adjunct folks out there that are well respected in their field but have absolutely no skill or experience presenting a curriculum or developing a daily lesson plan for their course.

My wife went to KATI last spring and one of her teachers kept hitting on her and asking about me and our relationship. She told him to get lost but he kept getting more and more aggressive. She's not wanting to go back this fall because of this idiot. Hope she can convince BRADD to let her change schools. She's not looking for legal options just an education.

Wow! At the very least this instructer needs to be reported for sexual harrassment (a lawsuit is up to you both, usually a waste of money though). He is a postion of power and I would not be comfortable having him as my instructor asking those kinds of questions. What if she gets a grade that's lower than she was expecting? Did she really do poorly or was it retribution for turning him down?

That instructor has no business teaching, your wife isn't the problem, the instructor is.

His name wasn't Dr. Gilliam, the Anatomy instructor, was it?

I don't know if that's how you spell his name but he's good at hitting on his female students. Hence the reason he's DIVORCED!!!

When I had him in class he hit on girl's and he also would bring his mistress every once and awhile. This was back in 06'-08'.

I'm sure your wife gets hit on more than you know. Seems that no matter where we go or what we are trying to do, men try to take advantage of women. I too attended school there for automotive. It was at main campus tho and I was one of the few girls that ever tried it. Let me tell you that the teacher asked me to stay to clean up since us students took turns cleaning up the shop. He made it painfully obvious what he wanted to do to me. I was single but I'm sure it wouldn't matter to this scum if I had been married. He cornered me in the tool room by his office stairs and I thought I would never get out of there. I got to my car and left as soon as I could. When I got home I threw up and never returned. I didn't even ask for a refund and it was early in the semester I could have got one I think. I just wanted to put it behind me but reading that your wife went thru the same at the other school makes me sick. You should sue. too bad I was too embarrassed maybe your wife wouldn't be a victim.
