my kid came home bragging about playing online games with schoolmates and some complete strangers - I'm so displeased.

These Ipads are a really bad idea. The kids using them are NOT being sufficiently monitored and they are not even learning anything useful. They are being given "free time" with them when they can do what they want...Also, who's brilliant idea is it to learn on an apple system since the majority of us run windows pc systems at home (and isn't that what the school is set up for also)? The kids don't even understand the conversion/compatibility between the systems. If I wanted my kid wasting time playing games online, I'd do it my self.

Ask your kid what they are actually doing with the Ipads.

The kids know how to delete most history and most patent have no idea how to use one much less check it. The problem is the kids are smarter than the parents. So lets give them all a 600 dollar iPad that we have to be responsible for!!! Pure stupidity!!!! They should have bought a set for the classroom an been done with it. As far as homework goes do you know the policy for kids that don't have wifi at home? No u don't those kids have to come to school earlier than everyone else to do it how is that fair? And the security system the school uses doesn't block a lot of inappropriate web sites the kids don't need to have access to!

I have four that have the Ipad. I made my oldest show me how to work it because I use windows at home. I also made my youngest two give me their passwords. My youngest were upset when I checked their history. I have made them delete games off of them. I check their Ipad daily to see what work they need to complete and turn in They can only use them at the kitchen table. If I find out they are playing a game on it their in trouble. IT IS A TOOL NOT A TOY!!!! I also check the parent portal to keep up with missing assignment and assignment that are 0. Then I compare to the Ipad. I think they are 50/50. I am still concerned with their writing skills. I guess they will be great at typing.

people READ - SHE CAME HOME BRAGGING - meaning they were playing online AT SCHOOL - read first before you start your silly tirades.

I am completely CAPABLE of monitoring my child AT HOME - I'm talking about at SCHOOL. And I don't want my kid ever having an unmonitored email, skype, tumbler facebook account etc at EITHER place.

My daughter is being taught how to use programs at home on a pc - but I don't let her use the internet un-monitored. I have worked on the macs since the early 80's - back when you had to have a boot disc so your statement that I'm against TECHNOLOGY is just hot air - again, WRONG ASSUMPTION. I just don't want my child having free time at school and talking to strangers online.

It's BECAUSE I am VERY familiar with the technology and what these kids are up to with it that mine won't have a smart phone,(doesn't have any cell phone of her own - except for rare occasions). My kid is forced to use the home land line for calls.

Bad idea, you're right! I don't want their drone set up to use my wifi either.

What difference does it make what "system" they learn on? They should be learning to switch between whatever they're given to use, or bring themselves. Part of the problem is people getting stuck in ruts, and only learning one operating system. I've supported and used Windows, Mac OS-OS X, OS/2, various flavors of Linux, Solaris, AIX, iOS (both Apple and Cisco), BeOS, and others. It good to learn everything under the sun, not just what you're comfortable with or what you have at home. It doesn't make any difference what I use, I can get the same amount of work done.

There is also the fact that more relevant apps are available on the iPad. I'm sure that is where you were going with that argument, since everybody uses it therefore it is all that should be used. Windows RT (what is used on the Surface RT) isn't Windows per se. It only runs apps from the Windows Store. Which right now, is a ghost town.

They aren't teaching them - that's the problem. They are just using to them to play games and search the net. The problem is NOT platform, it's oversight and application.

Hey, I have an idea. If you have an issue with something your child is doing in one of his classes, then why don't you talk to that teacher to express your concerns? If nothing comes of that, then go to the principal.

This is just a response and not directed at any post or comment on this board. Just merely an opinion & we all know what they say about those :)

Only 6th - 12th graders received iPads, so when will one hold the child accountable for their actions? I'm just wondering because if one doesn't want your child to play games on their iPad then maybe you should hold them accountable & not the school. I'm thankful for the school allowing them to have a $600 device for $50. I understand it can & will be misused though but that is with anything. I realize the school should be accountable to an extent. But one must realize that even though we think that our kids are ôsafe" at school and constantly monitored they really aren't. It is impossible for one teacher to watch what every kid is doing. Kids can skip classes and with all the outbuildings they could probably hide out if they wanted to. Same thing with the iPads. Your kids are not constantly watched at school so why would you expect that their internet activity would be any different? As a parent, you must instill in your child to follow the rules and to make good decisions.

My daughter has gotten grounded but we only took her phone, kindle, and laptop. We let her keep iPad for school. She got caught texting on iPad. Monday I took that iPad to the vice principal and told them to give her paper work till she is ungrounded. So now she isn't allowed to use the iPad at school at all because I the parent said so. The school give me no problems. If you don't like the iPad then give it back and shut up. Personally I like the iPad and when my child is ungrounded she will get it back
