Does anyone know how to get rid of grass burr stickers? I"ve tried digging and got way too many to keep doing that and this hot dry weather seems perfect for them. Can't roundup the whole yard.

Finally a topic that isn't trash. You just need to use a pre-emerge weed killer before Spring. You will have to wait till next year to do that. I would also start bagging your clippings, because everytime you mow your lawn you are just helping them spread.

Large area look at Texas A&M website - there is a new chemical that will treat grassburrs. Smaller area's - home lawns etc, water, fertilizer, and mow. A healthly bermuda yard will choke out the grass burrs. Bag your clippings and dispose until you get rid of them.
I have both nieghbors on each side with grass burrs / stickers - I have none.

Agree!!!! My yard use to be nothing but grass burrs and a little bit of grass.Got me a mower with a bag and it did take several years but the Burrs are few and far between. Another way to pick up the stray burrs is to drag an old blanket or rug behind your mower and just like them pesky little burrs will attach to your shoelaces, they will attach to the rug or blanket and then just toss all in the trash.

We had a section that was over loaded with burrs and we had to drag it all out and start over with top soil and St Augustine sod. I lost hop at getting rid if them they just kept flourishing and spreading everywhere.

I'm with Lena. Before I knew it, my yard was already dead. I think it was pretty much dead back in May. It makes me mad that I didn't start watering sooner. I am going to have to spread some grass seeds or put down sod next year if I want to have a decent yard. Does anybody know the best time to do that? I'm assuming Spring, right?

Bowie & Hmmm- I have to bring in top soil also, im telling ya, under my sand...is...more sand!...lol...and my land slopes..we had a porch and side walk poured a couple years back, and u can now see UNDER the sidewalks because I have nothing to hold the soil...so we're gonna have top soil brought in, just for around house and sidewalks and patios, no way could i keep a pretty yard w/2 acres..altho its not much, i have fields around me and so im sure all those stickers and burrs just blow in the wind and plant themselves in my yard. Oh and HMMM..i do know spring is best time to plant, but im guessing it really depends on the rainfall we get, if we continue in this drought, your gonna be wasting money on sod or seeds....but Im doing same as you...have to mix two different kinds of grass after we bring in top soil cuz some parts are shady and others are direct sun...I aint giving up tho...ONE DAY im gonna have some grass and plants and flowers around my house instead of it looking like a house in the middle of the sahara desert!

An old fashioned way to get rid of the stickers already dead in the yard is to spread out old nylon clothes (hospice, etc) walk on them, pick up and throw away. Gets a lot of those suckers.

I have about 1/2 acre that is just covered all of a sudden. Trying to dig them out by hand but that sure gets discouraging and it's hot hard work. Is there some kind of chemical that I can put out that will kill them but not bermuda grass?

The better fertilized the grass the less weeds you'll have the good strong grass will choke out the weeds but if its bad you may have to kill the weeds before you fertilize

stickers are a member of the bean family. A fertilizer high in nitrogen will kill em for good. I used another idea my grandpa used when I was growing up get a goat they eat them before the grass. Of course they eat flowers before the stickers. They do keep trees and brush cleared as high as they can reach as well as fertilization fir your grass making it greener. Another old school method is a couple of ducks clip their flight feathers to keep them put and force them to walk. Their webbed feet puck up the stickers the duck eats sticker killing it. If you have kids its a terrific learning experience for them and you. Not to mention a small pygmy Billy goat is loads of fun and a great companion for children 5 and up. Especially rough and fearless little boys.

I sure wish you were right Bowie gardner. I DO NOT want the stickers and it doesn't seem to bother them one bit. Stickers keep sticking around!

Happy is right. pre-emergent about now, hoe up the ones that come up and burn them!! Keep your grass mowed short for the first summer when you are trying to get rid of them. Best thing then is to hoe them up and burn them any time you see them. Each "sticker" makes as many new plants as their are spines on the sticker. Good luck!
