We are historical reenactors and public speakers. The Wolfeboro 250th Committee had hired us to do several events for them in the anniversary year. After booking us and signing a contract several months in advance for several events, they cancelled one at the last moment due to their admitted mismanagement, and then called us wanting a refund of our fee! We had turned down other work when we contracted with them, and our contract clearly states no refund. As a gesture of good will we helped them with several things, and with advice, with no compensation. They had a contract for us to appear at their 4th of July celelbration. They broke this contract, also at the last minute, costing us other work, and 'stiffing' us for $175.00!
Our experiences with them were miserable, and as they represent, and are acting for the town, their actions are reprehensible, and have reflected badly on the town.
Recently, they tried to get reenactor groups to come to an encampment they have advertised for months. Several groups are aware of what they did to us, and they emailed US to tell us that they were letting Wolfeboro know that they would "UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE PART IN THIS OR ANY OTHER FUTURE EVENTS FOR WOLFEBORO" and that they "WERE SPREADING THE WORD TO OTHER GROUPS".
Wolfeboro has badly botched this year-long, once in a lifetime celebration, alienating respected and talented people. The committee is unethical and completely unprofessional, and we certainly would never be involved with them again! Additionally, they persisted in using photographs of us in their promotional material, designed to benefit themselves and the town. We were forced to send them a certified cease and desist letter!
We think it is a shame Chronicle chose to profile this Wolfeboro event.
With all due modesty, we are quite well known in New England circles, and have presented costumed historical programs to children at schools, and in museums, clubs, and historical societies in this area and other parts of New England. Wolfeboro's historcally-themed events for their 250th have all fallen apart because the committee has none of the planning skills necessary, and has broken legal contracts and shot themselves in the foot as far as being able to entice anyone of any substance or quality to participate! They now have an unsavory reputation, and no one wants to be associated with their 250th Committee's events! Sincerely, Adam and Mary Spencer, Center Ossipee, NH www.thecountryladyantiques.com
