All these comments are right on the money - Nicor's money! How frustrating it is that they own the monopoly on gas in our area. Following a year of promptly paid bills between $200-500 for our lovely 4 bedroom home (not a castle or hotel), we received a bill in July for $1600. I have attempted to deal with both "Keith" in July and "Mary" in August of their customer service department to no avail. And this evening, discovered that our gas has been shut off. My 3 little kids aren't bathing, and I have just completed my letter to Jon Yates, as well as the ICC, per all the wonderful comments above. Hopefully this can be resolved without me being pigeon holed into paying this crazy invoice in full. Any suggestions?

Look up Nicor's Executive Board on the internet and call the Vice President of Customer Service. He or she usually has a staff member to deal with these types of problems and they get resolved quickly.

I am the person who was featured in the Tribune article! I just found this forum on the net by accident.

I had no idea folks discussed cases like mine here. I need to correct a few items that were not very clear according to the article. My last bill was not just $30. I had paid them over $300 so that I wouldnt go into COLLECTIONS! They told me I wasnt being reported. HaHa Nicor had already put me into the credit bureau. The bill of $30 was the balance due after they refigured my gas usage minus the amount I had already paid. That is the answer for the man in this forum who was in disbelief. I only have a gas water heater during non heat months. Our townhouse is all electric otherwise. That is why I questioned my bill in the beginning. There are only 2 people living here and we are VERY frugal about our bills!

I now need to contact the ICC about our water bill.(Aqua of IL) Thanks to the prior posters for that number. We have lived here almost 10 months and have NEVER received a water or sewer bill!!! Im sure Jon Yates of the Whats my problem/Tribune doesnt need me hounding him again for help! The water company came out here to SHUT OFF OUT WATER SERVICE a few months back because they didnt receive any payments. Well, I never got my 1st bill yet! How could I pay it when I never received it? They are way worse than even Nicor was. Nicor was rather "snotty" to me on the phone. Aqua is just totally oblivious that there is ever a problem! Very nice; yet incompetent!

I will be happy when all of my utilities get settled here if this ever happens!

Thanks to all of the posters above!

I recently purchased a foreclosed home in June 2008. I received a $500.00 bill from Nicor the first couple of weeks I moved in. Funny thing is the home was in such bad condition there was not even any gas being used! No stove/oven, no furnace (didnt even know if it worked when we purchased home) and the hot water tank is electric!! Contacted them and they wanted me to supply info. as to my date of purchase to the home. Supposedly this matter was resolved. About a month later I receive a DISCONNECTION NOTICE. Contact Nicor AGAIN we will stop the disconnection BUT you need to make a payment. On what???? Again I thought the matter was resolved. This week I get a new bill in the mail for $800.00.Funny thing I just turned on my furnace Oct.22!!! The customer service reps are rude and tell me the supervisors are unavailable. I am getting to the point where I think I should just make the payments little by little...it's not right. I am a single Mom and I don't have the time nor the money to deal with their ignorance. Not to mention the rating on my credit from them! Any suggestions?
