The great San Gabriel Mission, was first in Montebello
#1 Nov 5, 2012
The original San Gabriel Mission location was on a small hill in what is now the eastern end of the Montebello oilfield. Writings of the mission's padres reveal that small bands of native Americans lived in nearby canyons and hills. The city of Montebello's significant historical site, the Sanchez Adobe, is also located in direct proximity to these same hills. Unfortunately these hills are now threatened by an unwise proposed development which would reduce the elevation of the hills by 100 feet and turn them into three plateaus convenient for condominium construction. These hills must be saved.
