Call 911 are you nuts. I have full medical coverage, medical coverage does not include emergency transport. If i'm anything shy of falling over dead I'm driving myself to the hospital. You won't catch me taking a $5,000 taxi ride. That being said, A simple phone call to the police asking for an escort is the correct way to have handled this situation. The cop should have had common sense when they pulled into the hospital parking lot but police and common sense in the same sentence is a quagmire<quoted text>
You might want to check you medical coverage. I believe most policies have $400.00 daily maximum, unless your particular policy has dropped that coverage. At any rate, who cares if your insurance will cover the cost or not, your life is much more valuable than that cost of an ambulance trip!

unfortunately, police are very narrow minded and focused with blinders. they mean well when it comes to THEIR mistakes. they do not know how to MAKE split second assessments. WHO DOES. But let us make a genuine mistake and God help us all.

I can't say I'd have done differently than this lady. Deputy used common sense in cuffing then releasing her too, but I don't think the ticket is warranted considering the fact that it WAS an emergency. Citizens aren't trained in how to handle an emergency so she didn't know. Just my opinion.

ok, she so over reacted. It's a pygmy-- they don't even give the anti venom for these snake bites. My husband was bit as well by one. We were in Paltka on a gathering, we went first to the Paltka hospital who then sent us to Shands Gainesville. He was given a lot of pain meds and kept overnight-- it does hurt like crazy-- but is not life threatening. She could have killed someone. The worst thing to do with a snake bite-- any snake bite-- is to panic-- it will cause the venom to race faster (think about it, you panic, your heart beats faster, the blood flows faster causing the venom to spread). This deputy did the right thing. If she was that concerned, she should have called 911.

I do NOT agree with woman getting ticket, I think if she got ticket it should be taken back. She was trying to get help for her husband for a very serious medical problem. Sorry, but I live in the woods and I know how serious a rattlesnake bite is; plus a friend of mine was bitten once and almost died within minutes of bite. I think woman did the right thing. All the cops in FL, and I ama native Floridian has gotten very cocky lately. And I am not a breaker of laws. But they think they can strong arm a person into whatever. They think they can haul everyone to jail and all they cite is the "Jessica Lungsford Law". Well, if this is what that law is about, it needs changing, I feel sorry for that little girl; but lets get real here. I am leaving the state of Florida because of the way the cops treat everyday normal citizens anymore. No reason for this. And I do not believe story of wheelchair and cow, I also believe cop was trying to justify! I would do same thing that woman did if a person I cared about got bit by a snake, any kind of snake! Because usually EMT cant even find where I live!!! I say woman takes case to court or maybe even get a lawyer and sue cops for illegal arrest!!

I think the cop did the right thing. Sorry Happy Camper, I disagree. Here's the scenario. I get bit by a snake. All I know is that the sucker bit me, he has rattlers and that makes him poisonous. Not ever working at your local zoo, I don't know pigmy from diamondback. I do know my a__ is in trouble and I'm not waiting for anyone to come to me. No time to stop and think about what shots or antibiotics I need. You may call me stupid but at least I'll be alive to hear it.
I agree whole heartedly with you on this!! Any snake bites me or anyone I care about, I am just hauling ass to hospital!! Especially if thing has rattlers on end of it and by way not all rattlesnakes have rattlers on end of their tail!! FL has lots of poinsionous snakes and I aint waiting around for EMT to get lost getting to my house! Cops way too cocky in FL anymore. I native Floridian, but moving due to way these cops are here anymore. They tried to tell me once pepper spray is a weapon!! They are nuts!! Power has went to their heads with this new Jessica Lungsford Law they keep quoting everytime you say anything to them.

My first question has to be: What would Putnam County Sheriff Dean Kelly had a rattle snake bitten him? I would first say a prayer and hope that I did not die,and then do whatever I had to do to get myself or another person to the hospital as quickly as possible-no matter what. What has me bothered is the lack of compassion in situations like this that we read about all too often. Would a hardened criminal go to all of that trouble just to drive to the local hospital to commit a crime? Please.

It's easy for us to sit back and judge, but when you are in a situation like that you don't stop to think what is the best way to handle it.

I know first hand about snakes. about 15 years ago on memorial day my brother got bit on the index finger by a diamondback rattlesnake. i called 911 immediately. He did the wrong thing by trying to suck it out. well it got in his system a whole lot quicker. within 10 minutes he was sweating and getting light headed. the paramedics and fire station arrived within about 10-15 minutes after i called, they killed the snake and took it with them to the hospital with my brother. he was in icu for 4 days. had a reaction to the antivenom. it was a messy sight. he survived and the doctor wanted to cut his finger off. he said no and is doing fine. his finger is still there and is still getting movement in it all the time. some people are not as lucky. but i'm glad i called 911 instead of trying to get him there on my own and risk killing or hurting someone else. i think the woman justifiablly got the ticket she deserved and next time just call 911. that's what their there for. i can understand the police also, he did not know what was going on. you get alot of people doing this.
