English gets edged out in much of Miami

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

Melissa Green's mother spoke Spanish, but she never learned -- her father wouldn't allow it.

I am very much in accord with statements made in this article, and I would hope that people in Miami/Dade read it, for their enthusiasm about the community's language predominance could very well start an ostracism from the rest of the overwhelming majority of Americans who speak English. Remember that those who immigrated at the beginning of last century became "Americans" first and foremost, and promptly learned English— respecting a basic requirement of citizenship Arrogance in and of their language (which I share as one of my mother tongues) is not.attractive nor "cute" and bespeaks ill of the reasons why they came to our shores in the first place.
North of Miami they find that this great nation of ours is there with English as its national tongue. Puerto Ricans in the mid-Florida area all speak, understand and write English as a second language they know, love and appreciate. They are by far better citizens than the mélange one encounters and is "greeted" with in Miami.

What a country! If people were denied imployment or an education because they couldn't speak english ... there would be lawsuits aplenty ... but deny an american citezen employment because hw can't speak spanish?... No problemo...

You should make friends with English speakers too. It's not hard to find them. Try joining a Club or some other group for socializing. If you really want to learn you have lots of opportunities. Some places here offer free classes for adults to learn English. If you only stay in your community all the time, this will not help you and will only cause you to feel separated from mainstream American society. I wish you luck.

It's not just the language, it's the culture. They do not have the common understanding that we have about fair employment etc. If an undercover reporter (outside of miami) tried to get a job here, I think most Americans would be outrages at what they would hear. and I am talking about national companies. In fact one well known well established hotel speaks only spanish in HR. My friend got spit on and told to get out this is their country. You know, America is going to get what it deserves for turning it's head. What about foriegn degrees? You know all that college money is not going to matter because major companies accept these 3rd world degrees as equivalent, even if the applicant barely speaks spanish. Corporatiosn don't care because they either sell to SA or locals. I don't know how many times i have been attacked or told to get out of Miami. And really, I am not confrontational at all. It happens if you ask a simple question, like whats the real parking fee.

Actually, American education sucks. 2 years in college taking humanities, english, american history instead of learning the real things you're gonna be doing on the job. No wonder a Bachelor degree means little here. A Venezuelan girl that was here went back because she didn't wanna waster her time with American education. She said she'd be back after graduation.

"The Anglo population is leaving," said Juan Clark,

That is all you need to know.

White flight, the last step before a city becomes a true hell hole.

White people make it nice, the liberals scream for diversity, city goes downhill.

Orlando is next!

It's easy to take over when a group is out-breeding another. Unwed mothers? But, of course! It's a rite of passage for people who believe "Commonwealth" means stealing from others. Take your flags and uncivilized culture back to the island from where you came. There are plenty here from other countries who want to be...Americans. Where, by the way, English is the official language. Understand?

Last I checked, Cubans have a low birth rate. Other Hispanic groups do reproduce a lot, though. Cubans control Miami, so respect your boss. Miami has been a Spanish-speaking city for so long that this is like beating a dead horse. Looks like Puerto Ricans wanna do the same in Orlando, so maybe you have a case in that city, but in Miami? Too late.

BTW, Irish, Polish, and Italians lived in cluster. This is not new here and your government promotes it by giving people stupid labels like "Hispanic", "Latino", instead of having us classify simply as white, black, meztiso, etc. The creation of the Hispanic/Latino label seems like a desire to unite Latin Americans to compete with you North-Americans. As the result, there are now Hispanic activists and some people talk about it like its a race. What a weird country, theres no such classification as Hispanic/Latino anywhere else.

Right you are when you say its too late to make a case in miami ...i was born and raised here and have witnessed the cuban take over, the only problem i have with it is that most will not learn english and look at me like whats wrong with me that i live here and dont speak spanish...dade county will become its own "country" seperated from the rest of the USA...a prime example of this was the election.....obama had already won and days later miami-dade still had not finished voting....most of my family and friends have left miami....i will soon follow. White people are the last of the mohicans down here and nothing will cange it other than leaving.....miami has truley become a shithole thanks to immagration....you really do feel like your in a third world country down here....it is sad, especially for the non hispanics who grew up here....farewell miami....the canker worm has consumed you! Sorry baby!!!:(
