This letter is intended to describe the sequence of events leading to the pending termination of Anne M. Christiano (Principal of Boonville Elementary School) by one David Hubman (Superintendent of Adirondack Central School District). Herein, I intend to present a pattern of irresponsible, unprofessional and generally inappropriate conduct regarding his relationship with Mrs. Christiano and his relentless mistreatment of her both personally and professionally since the moment he came on at Adirondack.
I would like to preface by pointing out that Mrs. Christiano was hired as Boonville Elementary Principal by a unanimous vote over several other very qualified candidates. In addition, she was endorsed and praised as a “promising young administrator” by our former Superintendent; who was a proven leader and a competent, compassionate professional (attributes clearly lacking in our current Superintendent). She never had a single problem with this individual. Mrs. Christiano was also endorsed by the two Superintendents at her previous principal position (both were long time, highly regarded professionals in their field). Having the support from three highly experienced and regarded Superintendents is not coincidence, but rather an indication of competence on the part of Mrs. Christiano. How the opinion of three seasoned professionals can be completely disregarded by Mr. Hubman is beyond me.

When our current “superintendent” began his work at Adirondack, rather than to use the opinion of his predecessor (our former Superintendent) to form his opinion of Mrs. Christiano, he chose to focus on the opinions of her detractors. These were a few individuals (in the minority) who were disenchanted with Mrs. Christiano because she held them accountable and required them to do their jobs according to school policy and procedure. Although our former Superintendent, in his wisdom and experience, refused to entertain the attempts of these individuals to undermine a new (untenured) administrator for their own gain; our current superintendant is tempered neither by wisdom, nor experience. Utilizing his infinite lack of sound judgment and his profound incompetence, Mr. Hubman immediately bought into everything he was told about Mrs. Christiano by her detractors (because it suited his agenda). Against all logic, he disregarded the opinions of three well seasoned Superintendents in favor of a special education director, a business administrator, a few lazy, disgruntled kindergarten teachers and a third and fourth grade teacher who disliked the fact that Mrs. Christiano required them to do their jobs. It should be here noted that All the information provided to Mr. Hubman by these individuals was lies and fabrication intended for the sole purpose of discrediting Mrs. Christiano (not a single piece of evidence was EVER provided to support their claims). Mr. Hubman fell for everything they told him….he believed every lie….disregarded any evidence which negated these lies (of which there is abundance) and he used this information to form his errant and ill-founded opinion of Mrs. Christiano again flying in the face of logic. He has continuously and consistently criticized Mrs. Christiano’s performance with absolutely nothing tangible to support his criticism. He has provided Mrs. Christiano with absolutely no empirical data to support his criticism, nor has he offered any kind of practical, useful advice regarding how she might improve. Mrs. Christiano has empirical data refuting every criticism Mr. Hubman has made against her.

Disregarding the overwhelming evidence negating his misplaced criticism of Mrs. Christiano, Mr. Hubman made the decision to place Mrs. Christiano on Administrative leave as of 3/25/2011. His unjustified, ill- conceived action has robbed Boonville Elementary School, it’s good teachers, support staff, and most importantly it’s students. He has stripped them all of a caring, compassionate, selfless Administrator and ally. Because of Mr. Hubman’s careless, irresponsible decision making Mrs. Christiano’s Son no longer has a school to attend!!!....he cannot even go back to his own school to say goodbye to his friends and teacher….Mr. Hubman has taken away the livelihood of an entire family!.....Their security their wellbeing…and their peace of mind have been stripped from them with absolutely no justification whatsoever. Boonville Elementary School supposedly has a no bullying policy?......if this isn’t a perfect example of excessive and ruthless bullying of a helpless victim, I’ve NEVER seen one!

At this point, I would like to explain the Real reason Mrs. Christiano was placed on administrative leave. In recent weeks there has been an ongoing problem with a Boonville Elementary student. This particular student has had several incidents in his regular ed classrooms. As a solution to the situation, Mr. Hubman made a rash, poorly thought out decision against the advice of Mrs. Christiano. Mr. Hubman’s decision has had disastrous results. The parents of the student involved are contemplating litigation against the District which could well result in a very costly lawsuit. Mr. Hubman in his desperation to mask his own vast incompetence and kneejerk decision making, has elected to use Mrs. Christiano as a scapegoat and place the blame with her. Mr. Hubman fully realizes that Mrs. Christiano is an easy target due to the fact that she is an untenured administrator (and therefore in a very weak position) and has clearly taken full advantage of his opportunity to clear himself of any liability.
In addition, Mr. Hubman has (as of this week) issued a gag order against the teachers and other support staff at Boonville Elementary School denying them their right to discuss the pending termination of Mrs. Christiano in any way; Yet another example of his dictatorial, cavalier approach. He has also decided, in his infinite wisdom, to deny the parents of the Boonville Elementary students an explanation as to why their children no longer have a principle. These seem like the desperate actions of a man with something to hide??? Finally, he has posted a listing for the (NOT YET VACANT) Principle position, soliciting interested parties to apply before the local School Board has even approved his suggestion to deny a worthy administrator tenure; Creating yet another potential legal liability for the district.

The community of Boonville and the School board representing this community needs to ask themselves if this is really the kind of individual they want running their school district. Do they really want an individual who supports the worst elements in their school while disregarding those who best serve the community and it’s children. In the short time Mr. Hubman has been at Adirondack, he has alienated every decent, kind person who works for the district. If anyone doubts this they need only ask around. He has alienated every Principal, he has mistreated staff and students alike, he has enraged parents to the point of litigation, brought good teachers to tears (like his cohort in the special education department has in the past); and finally, he has stripped Boonville Elementary School of the kindest, most selfless, compassionate Principal they will ever have without provocation or justification. I cannot understand for the life of me how any School Board member could EVER endorse an unscrupulous individual such as David Hubman unless he’s told them enough lies to cover himself. Now you ALL know the truth of what has happened. You should all feel the injustice and mistreatment that has been inflicted upon a very kind hearted, dedicated young administrator and every decent staff member and parent in the community by a vindictive, desperate little man. You should contemplate exactly what type of individual you want running your school district. This is the person who you are all ultimately placing your children’s fate with. Do any of you really want a cruel, punitive dictator, who cares for no one but himself and his own selfish ambitions running your school? The decision is yours. Do you really want your school board to support the removal of a caring, compassionate Principal who will always have your child’s safety, security and soul at the forefront of her thoughts? If not, then go to your School Board members and tell them that you DO NOT support Mrs. Christiano’s removal……tell them that you like the science fair she runs….and the children’s concerts…..the upcoming academic fair she organized, but will not be allowed to attend….tell them that you like a Principal who will never just mindlessly punish your child, but who will always listen patiently and hear your child’s voice as well as yours. Let them know that you want a Principal who will hold the few lazy teachers accountable…..and praise all the other great teachers we have at Boonville Elementary. Ultimately, the school belongs to the students and the parents who pay the taxes. It does NOT belong to some cruel, ruthless dictator like David Hubman and his tiny band of cohorts. I implore you all to take back your school while you still can. Go to your School Board members…attend the next board meeting…and let them know that you DO NOT want a ruthless, conniving little man like David Hubman controlling the fate of you children. The choice is yours.

Very well written, however, apparently you have never had a classroom of between 15-25 children to educate. Hardly a position for a "lazy" or "disgruntled" .
person. In as far as Mrs. Christiano's history goes all one has to do is google her name with the word Gloversville. You will find the follow article

JOHNSTOWN - Warren Street Elementary School Principal Anne Christiano - the target of a letter from another school's teachers expressing concern about working under her - was denied tenure Thursday night by the Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education.

It was the second time she has been denied tenure by the board.

The board voted 5-4 at Johnstown High School on a resolution that would have granted her tenure as a district principal.

Christiano was the only one of seven people up for tenure who was denied by the board Thursday night. The board went into a 25-minute closed-door executive session to discuss "employment history of a particular person," but it was unclear if Christiano was the subject.

Voting against Christiano, who was appointed Warren Street Elementary School principal in July 2005, were: Scott Miller, Leslie Buggeln-Bosworth, Susanne Fitzgerald, Joanne Freeman and board Vice President James Levin. Voting for tenure were board President Robert Curtis, Russell Martin, Robert Kosowicz and John David Praught.

Following the meeting, The Leader-Herald attempted to interview Christiano about being denied tenure when former Fulton County Assistant District Attorney Matthew Trainor stood up and physically blocked the reporter's access to the principal, who hastily left the cafeteria and the school.

"She has no comment," Trainor told the newspaper several times.

Christiano also didn't return a phone call seeking comment this morning.

District Superintendent Katherine A. Sullivan identified Trainor as a relative of Christiano.

Sullivan and Curtis were asked by The Leader-Herald if tenure denial means Christiano's time at Warren Street Elementary School is over at the end of this school year. The resolution stated that her probationary period expires June 30.

"We have to talk to our legal counsel [before commenting further]," Curtis said.

In early April, teachers and support staff wrote a letter to the Greater Johnstown School District expressing "anxiety and trepidation" about possibly working under Christiano now that their school is closing.

The Leader-Herald obtained a copy of the letter, which was dated March 31 and was sent from Jansen's "tenured teachers and support staff" to Sullivan. Members of the district's Board of Education also were sent copies of the letter.

Jansen has been targeted for closure at the end of the school and Curtis says teachers will be dispersed to the schools as vacancies exist and based on seniority.

Jansen Avenue Elementary School kindergarten teacher Ellen Jones said previously there have been 31 teachers and other district employees who have "opted to leave" Warren Street Elementary School over recent years because of Christiano.

The letter, in part, read: "Our only serious and perhaps even impassible hurdle in making the move to new buildings revolves around the anxiety and trepidation we feel when we confront the possibility of working under the direction of Anne Christiano, current principal at Warren Street Elementary School. Many of us have had unpleasant encounters and disturbing conversations with Mrs. Christiano. Those of us who have not personally experienced her unpredictable nature have heard enough retellings from reputable sources to make us uneasy."

The letter indicated that Jansen teachers and support staff "can't help but wonder why teachers, aides, secretaries, nurses, and custodians too numerous to count have opted to leave their positions at Warren Street School in the short time Mrs. Christiano has served as building principal. Some of us remember interviewing Mrs. Christiano in the spring of 2004 when she applied to fill the vacancy created when former Jansen Avenue Principal Mr. Richard Tucci retired. Even at that time we felt strongly that she was not a suitable match for our school community."

Board Meeting

I went to the board meeting tonight in hopes that maybe people could voice the sistuation. And the first thing that was said was that.. there could be no discussion of Mrs. Christiano,, we were told if we had questions to write them down and they would be answered soon. I went in the hopes of speaking of the great things you said about her. There are alot of parents willing to stand up for Mrs. Christiano but noone will listen,, all they say is... I'm not at liberty to discuss the situation. I would like to know how to be heard before a final termination is placed by the board. As of now (tonight) I don't know if the board has agreed yet. They are making it very hard when parents are not being nosey,,, but want to voice and support the principal. My child goes to Boonville and has always had good things to say. And she has made many many changes in her short time of being there. Please if anyone has any ideas of how to support her, and where to go to demand answers and a fair leave let parents know. We could sign a petition etc... I just want Mrs Christiano to know she has been a great addition to our school and & I hoped she could have seen her changes and the better school she was trying to make..

I thought they were voting tonight?? Maybe enough people are questioning it they are thinking it over more? I hope so, because I really like her. I do not agree with everything she has done, but it is obvious she is a good person and she is trying! I think there would be an army of parents protesting if we were given the chance.

Dear Unrelenting,(aka a family member) As I am sure you're aware, Anne is a very nice person and I am sure everything will work out for the best. Sometimes we find ourselves in positions were just not cut out for and then we have to have the sense to move on. Ultimately you will encourage her to find her niche in her career life and support whatever decisions she makes. I hope for nothing but the best for you and your family. By the way, "Principle" in this case is spelled Principal.

Nah, this wasn't written by her. This was written by a man, maybe her husband or Lawyer relative.

Must be enough parents complained when they couldn't wonder all over the building hovering over their little Johnny. Finally a principal with the "balls" to expect Teachers do their job and dress professionally while doing it. I can't imagine the bullshit she had to deal with.

You're right Pete. My *th child is now in K-5 and I've seen principals come and go over the years. She impressed me from the very beginning. She rattled some feathers but she made positive changes at the school. Most of the kids loved her. She knew their names, she talked to them, she treated them kindly. She started the academic fair which was a big hit last year and will be a big hit this week. I don't know what happened between Ann and the super, but this thing happened too fast. Lazy teachers at K-5...you bet! There are too many lazy teachers with tenure at ACS and they resent any sort of accountability. Just look at the Gov't teacher at the High School as a prime example. He should have been put on "administrative leave" years ago. But he stays and a dedicated principal is out the door without any reason given. I also have a problem the way the board meeting was handled tonight. The public comment period was over by 6:15 and the firing was not to be discussed. It's a damn shame.
