LEYDEN Bruce Quinn, 49, of Godeffroy is in critical condition after a snowmobile accident in Lewis County early Saturday morning, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

Quinn reportedly lost control of his 2006 Ski-doo on a sharp corner on Nefff Road in Leyden and collided with a tree about 1:14 a.m.

Quinn was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for a possible broken femur and multiple fractures. He was later transported to University Hospital-Syracuse where he is listed in critical condition.

Sounds like alcohol and snowmobiling don't mix. I pray that he will be ok. This happens every year. This is just the beginning of the accidents yet to come. Most of them can be avoided if alcohol and speed weren't a factor. Need to be more responsible.

"alcohol and snowmobiling don't mix"- then why do the trails connect to all the bar rooms? this type of behavior is rediculous and promoted as "economic development" by the politicians. it's not really about the activity anymore, it's about the bar rooms.

Good point. I had never thought of it that way. It also explains why many of these accidents occur during late night hours.

Sadly they are gonna drink whether it is at bars or their camps. They are out to 'have a good time' even enough to put their lives on the line. Fools.... good snowmobilers don't drink and ride. Bar owners don't give a damn about their customers so they keep selling them that 'Demon Rum'. Not to blame the bar owners cause they are in business to make money but the combination of the 'drinking fools' and the 'needy' bar owners is a mix that is most definately deadly. Too bad, cause snowmobiling is a wonderful sport. And like most things in life it just takes a few to spoil it.

they put the lives of others at risk, too. the state should stop reimbursing for trails that connect to bars. when they get done riding they can park their sleds and then go to dinner. dwi laws do not have strong enough consequences for snowmobilers.

It amazes me that everytime there is an accident, it is blamed on alcohol. I am not saying that alcohol was not a factor in this situation, but instead of pointing fingers why dont you sit back and think about what his family and friends are going through right now. These men went up to tug hill to have a good time, instead what they got was having to see their friend who was a inexperienced rider who didnt follow rules laying on the trail about to die. He absolutely put the lives of others at risk including my husband who was riding with him. Instead of pointing fingers at the bars,(which they were not at) and the ones that you most likely go into for lunch or dinner when you are up there. Try saying a prayer for him and his family and his friends that were with him during this horrific experience.

Well said skidoo girl.Ive known Bruce my whole life and he is a friend of the family.I also just bought the house acrossed the street from him.He is a really good person whom I have a lot of respect for.Sometimes you just get caught up in the moment and take risks that you wouldnt normally take. This was a terrible accident. The people that were there did an excellent job reacting and saving his life.We are all grateful for that.At this point we just want to see Bruce make the best recovery possible. We are all rooting for you Bruce hang in there!

These terrible accidents happen this time every year. This guy is lucky to be alive. Lets all pray for a complete recovery. Also, I pray that these people will realize that ALCOHOL and DRIVING don't mix! This isn't even the middle of the season and already we almost had a fatality. Wake up people and learn for this experience!!

Same goes for the ski areas. All trails lead to the bar, even the kids beginner trail. Every time I enter the ski lodge there are dozens of skiers at the bar getting loaded. Then they go out and ski and risk taking someone out when they fall. You people complain about snowmobiles. Well let me tell you more people get hurt at a ski area with broken bones and so fourth, not to mention deaths like they have had at Whiteface this year. We need to outlaw bars, ski areas and snowmobiles everywhere. The best thing we can all do is stay at home on our couch, eating potato chips, watching our tv and dieing from heart deasese like the urban idiots.

Give me a break! Ive been in area restaurants where they come off these trails, drink more than their share, only to get back on the trail and ride some more. I guess we ought to keep our mouths shut because they are bringing money into the businesses in this area. The hell with the welfare of others. Only one snowmobiler got caught so far goes to show that someone isn't doing their job. It isn't safe to go out on these trails... Here comes the weekend... and I'm wondering what kind of tragic news it might bring to some innocent family.

What are the NYS Penalties for DWI on snowmobile?
From what i can gather the only thing they get is a max $500 fine no mark on licence and no ins.increase . You can operate even with a revoked drivers licence.

You are correct. Again, a few days ago a man for upstate lost his life on a trail in Forestport. The investagation into this tragady points to speed as a factor. If they also do a toxology test, it might also reveal drugs and/ or alcohol too. This man was only 52. When is everyone going to wake up and stop defending this behavior! Also, this is no longer a safe family sport. The trails are too dangerous to ride with all the drug and alcohol use as well as speed.
