On a recent post regarding another issue, Watauga Medical Center was named. I would like to know the general public's opinion on the facility and the changes it has gone through recently (ex: the joining of Cannon and Blowing Rock etc) It is our community hospital but it seems that those who keep the doors open by taking our health care needs there have no voice. Just wondering.....

Well I have heard bad things for a while now. Used to, Watauga was the place to go. People came from surrounding cities and counties to be treated here. Not now. It has a horrid reputation. The nurses seem overwhelmed and unhappy when I've been there. Definitely overworked...

I too have heard nothing but bad stuff and have had bad experiences there also. The biggest problem that i am aware of is the hospital seems more interested in becoming an empire and land barons than actually being a hospital.

I don't go to Watauga unless I have to. It takes hours to get into the ER & its just horribal. I've been told by employees that work there that the doctors sit around & play cards while there are people in the ER. It wouldn't be the place I would want to be if I was really sick or hurt. I know a lot of people who work there & they say that its an awful place to work too. Under staffed, under paid, over worked. Plus the system won't hire any more people because apparently the hospital is broke, or so they say. Which is funny-seeing as how they charge outrageous amounts for everything. And on the rare occassion they do hire they don't offer enough money, hours or benefits for it to be worth working there. My sister is a CNA & was offered a job working for them, they offered her $3.00 less an hour from what she was making at a GROCERY STORE, would only give her 30 hours a week(she gets 40 at the grocery store) and you know what 30 hours a week means...NO BENEFITS. Its ridiculous. Its sad that there is such a need for nurses here, but the hospital doesnt want to give them what they deserve for doing the crap work.

I like how they have the money to keep buying new rugs for the lobby and elevators, but they say they're broke.

Yes it is my understanding that they buy up any and all property they can surrounding the medical center. Why? They can barely staff what they have now. I also know nurses who either work there now or have worked there. It is not safe~ The nurses admit that because they can only do so much. They have brought in a bunch of "outsiders" to micro-manage the place. They want CMC or Baptist status. Just don't see it happening.

It's interesting that in Watauga Democrat's recent poll taken of favorite places to work, WMC didn't even get mentioned out of, what, 40 or so businesses? Why is that?

Doctors don't play cards and goof off while sick people get ignored. That's dead wrong. There IS a problem with ER being slow and that is caused by several problems, including chronic understaffing and citizens abusing the system by coming to the ER because they're too cheap or poor to have a regular doctor. The problem isn't the staff; it's the management which has made some BAD financial moves (along with a sick economy) which has made WMC a sad place to work lately. Unless you work in administration. Then it's probably great.

Well I personally know someone who was in the ER seeking treatment for chest pain. He could hear the staff right outside his room. One of those was one of the ER doctors. They were talking about how the uninsured are leeches on society and things of that nature. That is no place to discuss issues like that. He left there with a very bad taste in his mouth for the whole place. I am sure the whole place is understaffed and ER's will always be abused by people. Part of the problem is that they've brought "outsiders" in because they bring a new way of thinking. I know there are several competent, educated nurses in the hospital (Master's level nurses) who will never get positions in administration there. They will not hire them. Instead, they bring in people from away and no one ends up being happy with them. Most of all, the ones who have to work under their "reign." They need to begin to listen to the ones who are there keeping the place running during holidays, nights, weekends, floods, snow storms etc. or it is going to go right down the tubes. No, I take that back. It won't because there is no other place to work here without traveling an hour or more in one direction or another off the mountain and some just aren't willing to do that. They have people by the pubes and they know it.

<sarcasm> Ya'll are totally right. WMC is just an awful place. Especially when there are so many other great hospitals around. Great hospitals like Ashe Memorial, Blowing Rock, Caldwell, or even Canon.</sarcasm> :-/

Seriously though, if you care at all about your health WMC is THE place to go. The reason they are so increadibly overcrowded is because everyone knows they can count on WMC not to kill them and people come from all over. If you aren't dying and are coming to the ER, then you will be waiting for a very long time. But as long as you aren't a drug seeker you will get the best medical attention the High country has to offer.

Understaffed, underpaid, and overcrowded yes. But if you can drive all the way to a better hospital then you shouldn't be going to the ER anyway.

The administration at Watauga Medical Center is totally disconnected from the mission of the organization. The employees mean absolutely nothing to them. Everyone who works there works in an atmosphere of intimindation and fear. The administration get their kick backs....they laugh at corporate compliance laws as they think they do not apply to them. Don't ball ticket, race tickets, vendor rebates, trips to all kinds of places sound like a little corporate non-comliance?

The people in the ER are all professional and efficient. All ER's are overcrowded due to the fact that there are so many people who do not have insurance and go there for a 'non-emergency' situation rather to a doctor who will charge them. These patients are put to the back of the queue unless their situation warrants quicker action. Because they are forced to wait, they complain. I'm sure most of the negative posts here are from these individuals.

Regarding the administration, yes, they are disconnected. I would like to see one of those guys spend an afternoon in the ER to see how one more doctor and 2-3 more nurses or assistants would make a difference.

Emergency rooms all over the country have the same issues as WMC. Do you think because your in a little country town that we are isolated from triage situations at the WMC on a daily basis. There is a reason youíre separated from the ER. Be happy you have what you have here and you donít have to be seen in a large hospital with lines going out the doors into the streets. The staff at the WMC are some of the best you are going to find. If you donít believe me, have yourself a ďreal emergencyĒ, like smash your face into a light pole at 80 mph or something, believe me you will be seen right away. I donít think anyone should expect an ER to treat a cut finger like little Sally pitching a fit she didnít get her happy meal fast enough. You should have your man card removed. Crying over a couple stitches not being put in fast enough! Save you some cash and by some fishing line and a barbless hook next time. Youíre from Todd? Man Card revoked. Go back to Florida, Sally.

What is a person to do if they have an emergency and no insurance? I lost my job a few months back and I could not afford to take out a Cobra policy. I also have a pre-existing condition and have been unable to get coverage. I am terrified something will happen and I will need medical care. With you saying how the ER staff feel about uninsured people, I would not dare go there. That's just awful; people ought to step back and consider that something may happen to them one day and they might just be walking in the same shoes as me.
