I will never enter the doors of Mountain House ever again. My worst experience in a restaurant in Boone. The owner is a very mean old lady that would not let me join my family who was already sitting. I waited to bring in my sleeping 1 year old child who I had been in the car with until he woke up. What a crazy lady, we all just left before we even ordered. I couldn't believe she wouldn't seat me and my son and in front of everyone else waiting fora table as well. Everyone sitting there was absolutely astonished. What an ugly way to treat people coming to give you business. I have nothing good to say.

Troy's is really a pretty good place. It's too bad that the reputation of the previous "Mel's Diner" at this location seems to have tainted Troys.

The new owner (Troy) cleaned the place up tremendously and replaced the bad food and lousy service with really pretty good diner fare and very good friendly service.

Don't skip this place because of a bad experience with the former 'mel's diner'!

The owner is a complete fool and rude to the 10th degree, she has special place waiting for her in an afterlife...may the fires burn extra hot!

Mountain House and the lady that owns it have an absolutely awful reputation around Boone. I guess there are enough new tourists passing through to keep her in business.

The Mountain house IS terrible, I am glad I have agreement here, I stopped in there after a 12 hour drive from Florida totally beat and famished and the service and the food had me back in the car in 15 minutes

Wuts funny is everyone on here isn"t even from boone and dont have a damn clue what there talking about. Mountain House has been around forever and the tourists that do come up come back every year. And that mean old lady that runs it, is just mean cause she's the only damn person in this town that know how to run a resturant.

Someone needs to build a TGI Friday's in Boone or BR. I love their food, good atomosphere, and none around.

Crazy mean lady that runs the mountain house owns that new seafood place where the old los arcos, wishbones, baxters blues and bbq used to be. I can't remember the name of the place, but we took one of our friends from hickory out to eat there one night and it was pretty bad. I orderd a filet steak med rare and it was almost well done, it didn't have any taste to it, no salt, no seasonings. even my husband said his food wasn't good at all. I was so embarresed that we took our friend there and it was yuck. If I had known before hand that she owned it, I would have never, never went there. Mountain House and this place will always be at the bottom of my worst rest. list.

It's funny how people get so uptight and in such an uproar over that "crazy mean lady" that owns the Mountain House. That "crazy mean lady" seems to know how to run a business pretty damn well to be around for 35 years! I think that people just can't handle the fact that there is a strong willed business owner who stands up for what she has worked hard for and doesn't kiss everyone's ass the second they decide they want to complain because they want a discount!!!
People have been trained to believe that all they have to do is whine and bitch and it is free. This business owner doesn't believe that. I agree.
If you don't like Mountain House, don't eat there. But until you run your own business successfully for 35 years (especially a restaurant) as an individual business owner, who are you to trash talk??? You are probably the whining person who bitches about everywhere you go.

I've known Betty for a very long time and have to agree she will never win Miss Congeniality. She can be extremely gruff and rude. She gets work out of people by pushing them as hard as possible. A lot of people put up with her but just disagree with her on something and you will be treated like a dog that messed the carpet. I have seen them refuse to seat people unless all the party are in line. Many local people refuse to eat at either restaurant she owns. I don't go there a lot anymore as Troy's has much the same kind of menu and you will be treated as a customer should by him. I feel like many others Port Christopher is not up to par with other restaurants and I don't see success happening. If it were not for people who don't know better I think she would be out of business.

What Boone needs is a Red Lobster. It would sink Port Christopher's. It seems like the only people that come on here and take up for Port Christopher's are her family and the wait staff. Their comments show what type of people they really are. Their language is as bad as their food.

Wish I had read these posts before I tried to eat there. Worst experience I ever had at a restaurant! Stay far, far away unless you like terrible food, and then verbal abuse from the management if you complain about the quality of the food. I ordered a flounder sandwich for about $8. When it came, and I bit into it, there was no fish, just fried breading. I pulled the breading apart looking for the flounder, and there was a nickel-sized piece of fish inside all that breading. I informed the waitress, who apologized and said she'd "get that fixed." Next thing I know, she's back without any food, but telling me that I should go talk to the manager at the register up front. He wouldn't even come to the table to discuss it with me! When I explained the problem to him, he tells me that "obviously you have already eaten the fish" and "since you bit into the meal, you have eaten the meal, and now you will have to pay for this meal." I never said anything about not paying, I just wanted some fish in my $8 fish sandwich! He did not offer to make me a new sandwich, instead he more or less accused me of lying about the quality of the food, and whether I had already eaten the fish, and of attempting to not pay for the meal (stealing)! I'm pretty sure its the first time I've been called a liar and a thief in a restaurant. When my husband went to the same manager to try to clear up the sitation, the guy threatened to call the police. I've been to Boone many times, and eaten a lot of meals there, and believe me this is not representative of their usual hospitality. Usually we gets lots of friendly service, a warm "thanks y'all" as we leave, and an invitation to "come back soon, hear." I love Boone, just not this restaurant!

I am assuming you are talking about Port Christophers. If so, that experince seems to be par for the course for them. Not to long ago the owner's grandchildren came on here and were extremely rude and used terrible language. It is horrible that they accussed you of trying to steal fish and then to threaten to call the cops... This place must really be struggling to get so bent out of shape over an $8 sandwich. Sorry you had a bad experince but there are some really great seafood restaurants in Boone and Blowing Rock, Mikes Inland Seafood next to New Market is really good and the Speckled Trout on Main Street in Blowing Rock is really good. You can go there and have a nice meal and not have to worry about being accused of stealing food.

My husband and I were in Boone at Port Christopher's this weekend and we loved the place. The hushpuppies were out of this world. Our meal was wonderful and we could not have asked for better service. We live in Greensboro and some of our restaurants could take some lessons from them. They truly know how to great their customers. Thanks to Cruz and everyone for a great meal. We will see you soon.

I travel a lot on job and my husband and I love to just get in the car and try new places. We suggest two in Boone, NC. One is Port Christopher's. Their customer service is excellent and their food was delicious. They know how to treat their customers. We felt the prices were really good also.
The other place is Melanie's in downtown Boone. We had such a great breakfast there a couple of months ago that we traveled up there again just to eat there again. It was so nice sitting outside and enjoying the weather and the food was out of this world.
Try both of these places. The really nice part was that we are from Greensboro and were traveling with our puppy. They both let us eat outside with her. We had her in a "puppy carriage" so she wasn't bothering anyone. We give them both two thumbs up.
