I am doing genealogy on my family surname of Staggs. I was in Bonnieville and searched the John Quinn/Staggs Cemetary and found my Great grandfather's grave site and stone. There is no death date on his stone. I went to Frankfort, KY Vital Statistics without success. I spent several hours in the Kentucky Library Archives without success. I visited the library and Historical society in Bonnieville and although interesting still had no success. I have contacted some members of the Staggs family in Bonnieville, and although they say they might have some pictures they are elderly and do not seem to respond with a picture exchange after I forwarded other family photos to them. The individual I seek information on is Dudley P. Staggs. He and his family were long time residents of Bonnieville. Dudley was listed in the 1900 census for the area but not after. It is likely his death date was after 1900. Dudley served in the Civil War and I have contacted the Tennessee Library Archives seeking information as this was his state of entry into the war. My plea is for anyone in your area who may have ANY information on Dudley P. Staggs or ANY photos to please contact me. I understand that he and his family were prominent land owners in your region and surely someone will recognize him and have information on him so he and his story will live on in our genealogy that will be passed down to future generations. I came this route of the forum because I could find no address to reach your editor. I sincerely thank you for any assistance you may give in this mystery of Dudley P. Staggs.

I am going to talk to my mother. She is 65 and has lived in Bonnieville her whole life along with my 89 year old great aunt. I will see what I can find out for you.

Thanks for your response. Dudley P. Staggs did have a second family with Ellie Bryant and their daughter's name was Rosa Letha and son's name was Dudley Duell( called Duzy). They lived in the Bonnieville area. Dudley Duell died when he was 24 while the daughter lived until a hundred years old. When Dudley died, Ellie married a Poston and continued to have children. Dudley was much older than she- 68/24 according to the census. There must be a family bible that gives Dudley's death date and his earlier(first) family information. I have some of his first family informtion but would like to know more abouthim with pictures. You sound familar with the family. Do you have other information or pictures of Dudley? An Emmett Staggs was son of Dudley's son, Jack and his wife Estelle. I do not know of an Archie- but maybe an Arkley.

Thank you, Mr. "Whoever" for any effort you may give to resolve the mystery of Dudley P. Staggs. It is inconceivable to me that a man who fought in the Civil War and survived, who raised "several Children" (unsure of the number) who undoubtedly had children of their own would not be more recognizable to the area. In addition, any of the public services-such as newspaper obits, funeral records or churchs in the area should be forthcoming with information within their archives/records. Please, pass it around and let's see if we can come up with a death date, information on what happened to his first wife, Jane, where she is buried(she is not with Dudley), Dudley's life stories and any photos of him. I continue to pursue information on him from the National Military Archives, letters to other leads and library archives. Are there any librarians out there in Kentucky that can help? Thank you for waking-up your older relatives for information or photos.

I am searching for information on Dudley Staggs. His parents are James and Mary Staggs. His brothers are Hinton James, Arkley, Turner P, and sister Emily. James and Mary were born in NC. The children were born in TN. Dudley was married to Jane O Brown, and then to Cindy Ella BRyant. He died between 1900-1910. The records were all destroyed. Please help, I have come to a "dead end" so to speak.

Shane-looks like we are looking for the same Dudley. Dudley P. Staggs had children named John that was crushed in a quarry accident; he had a son named William Dudley who was also injured in a quarry accident and lost both legs. Both these sons lived in the Bonnieville area and had children who possibly are still living there or decendants who are living there. Perhaps these decendants will have information or pictures they will share with us.

This message is for MR/MS Whoever and MR/MS Rock and Roll- Have you been able to talk to your elderly relatives to see if they know or remember anything about the Dudley P. Staggs family?

Dear Brenda, Oh, yes they do sound familiar. William Dudley was named for his father, Dudley P. Staggs. My grandfather, Frank, was William Dudley's brother. I recently was in Bonnieville and talked to Jack's widow, Estelle, trying to find a picture of Dudley P. Staggs. I visited the Staggs Cemetary and found Dudley P's gravesite but there is no date on the small stone made by Jack. I have pictures of William Dudley (the one with legs shattered in a quarry accident). Do you have pictures of William Dudley's dad, Dudley P.? Do you have pictures of William Dudley's brothers?(John-killed in a quarry, Frank -or any others) I have a picture with five guys in it but not sure who they are- it came from Mary your grandmother. Do you have any information on the death of Dudley P-date, why and what Dudley P. was like? Where is his wife Jane buried? She was William Dudley's mother. How many wives did Dudley have? I have been working on a genealogy for the Staggs family and eager to share information with you. Please stay in contact. Your grandmother, Mary has my address and phone number and so does Estelle. If not let me know and I will forward it to them to get to you.

My grandmother, Mary, died when my Dad was very young, but I grew up around all her brothers and sisters. Never knew anything about my great-grandfather, other than his name. HIS wifes' name was Minnie Bryant. Sorry I can't be more help. I've heard my Dad speak of a Dudley Staggs, but I can no longer question him on this since he passed away 3 years ago.

Minnie(Ella) Bryant was Dudley's 2nd (I think) wife and she was NOT William Dudley's mother. His mother's name was Jane. Jane and Dudley P. had most of their children in Overton, Tennessee. If you grew up around all the Staggs family, maybe some of them gave their family bibles or pictures to their children. Will you be so kind to check with them to find out- surely William Dudley told family stories to his kids and these stories were orally transferred. It should give your ggreatgrandfather's mother's name on his death certificate. Are you interested in genealogy? Your family can be traced back to Overton, Tennessee where some of them were educators, land owners and a strong part of building the United States-for instance, Dudley's P's brother, Turner Staggs, lived in Chickasaw County before Oklahoma even became a state. Another brother married a daughter of a Harvard Professor who went to Overton, TN to open a school for women/girls. They were very literate for the early and mid 1800s. Dudley P. served in the Confederate Army and he provided his own horse to do so. Please check with your other older relatives(or their children because these stories are passed down) and get back with me. Don't worry about "ugly" stories- they are a part of the human race and give life to the genealogy.

I questioned my Mother and she says that my great-grandfather (W.D. Staggs) was hurt in a rock crusher accident. his wife was the one that was named Minnie Bryant. My great- great grandfathers name was Dudley. I have a picture of W.D. with all of his children, but none of Dudley.

W.D. Staggs and his dad, Dudley P. married sisters. One's name was Minnie(WD's wife) and the other was Ellie (Dudley P's 2nd? wife). Please ask your mother if she was told or heard any more information about WD's mother -Jane. When did Jane die? Where? I have several pictures of WD but none of his brothers(John & Frank) or Dudley, his dad. Jack was one of WD's sons. Jack hand carved Dudley P. a simple head stone. If you can contact Jack's widow, Estelle and perhaps her children can go through Jack's pictures. Jack seemed to be aware and perhaps keeper of family heirlooms/stories but when I was in Bonnieville, Estelle was not able to go upstairs where the pictures were. Jack surely had pictures of his uncles(others of Dudley's children)and his aunts. Most of us have pictures of our grandfathers and Dudley P. was Jack's grandfather. I wish we could locate the pictures before Estelle dies so the pictures won't get lost or destroyed. I am sincerely grateful for all your help.

Sorry, but Mom doesn't know anything about Jane. She must have died long before my Dad came along. My e-mail is bandj@scrtc.com, please e-mail me with information on my ancestors. Also would like to see the pictures you have. I can e-mail you the one I have. Thanks loads. I'll try to find out more. Also would like to know your name and where you live.

Doris & Brenda, I belong to this Staggs family through the oldest child of James & Mary Staggs:
Hinton James Staggs who married Elana Fisk (the daughter of Moses Fisk). He was the Harvard professor you mentioned who came south from Mass. to start a female academy at the little town of Hilham (Overton Co.) TN. I did not know about his brothers who went to KY but I knew the youngest brother, Turner P., went to Indian Territory and died in Beckham Co., OK which is in western OK. Do you have any leads before James and Mary. All I know is they came from N. Carolina.

Hi and welcome to the conversation, June. I don't yet know much about James & Mary Staggs. I found, in 1850 Census records of Warren County Kentucky, James & Mary and their family listing those with their household at that time who included Dudley P.(my ggrandfather) and Emily, Arkly H., Turner P and a Nancy Brown (or Burris?). I have since been searching for information on Dudley P. and his wife Jane and their children so have not pursued James and Mary. This census says they were born in North Carolina but keep in mind Tennessee WAS the northern part of North Carolina before it became the state of Tennessee so maybe there was no migration. I have spent some time in Kentucky state archives to pursue Dudley P's information and although corresponding with Library Historians in Overton , TN I have not been to Overton, TN. Both Overton and the North Carolina state archives are on the '09 summer agenda. If you are related to Hinton James Staggs, did Hinton have a picture of his brothers? I am still looking for a picture of Dudley P. at any age. Most of us have pictures of our mothers and fathers so it would seem Hinton would have had one of Mary and James or passed an oral story to his children. Brenda's e-mail is above. My e-mail is eller.larry @ att.net . Keep in touch and perhaps sharing information will speed us along to new discoveries.
