Well, I'm white. I don't qualify for anything. Just if I were black, I could get a free ride to college and sell crack!!!

That is the most awefullest thing I have heard. If you want to go to college then go do not blame your skin color on the reason why you are not going. I am white and I am taking online classes to go to school why can't you. If feeling sorry for yourself is the best you can do then by all means keep up the good work but keep it to yourself cause I for one do not want to hear that kind of crap or read about it. That to me is so degrading and just down right stupid.

Sorry, I was just looking at posts and it came to my attention: "awefullest" is not a word! "the most awful thing" would have worked!

You really sound like a "poor-me---I'm a failure cuz of my color" kind of person. Get over it! Don't white people criticize black people for doing that?????

I am Caucasion, made only average grades in school so I qualified for nothing, had no special talents to get a scholarship----but I CHOSE to get a LOAN to get my AA, then BS, then MA. If I feel like it, I may go back and get my doctorates. It took me 15 years to get all of those degrees, but guess what? I didn't quit. I didn't blame others because I had to take out a student loan, and I didn't blame others if I failed a class and had to retake it. I have worked in the public schools as well as in the medical field currently doing quite well with a new home and great vehicle. I will be paying on my student loan a LONG time, but it is better than working an entry level job that I do not have a passion for.

Please, ANYONE can get a student loan. ANYONE!!! Rich, poor, smart, dumb. Whatever. Low interest rates, and you don't start paying it off until 6 months after you graduate. Don't let your self-pity and jealousy of others priveledges keep you from fulfilling your desire to attend college.

It is so sad someone like you tries to represent white people. It is obvious you are racist and lump every black person in to the drug dealer group. I sure hope our black community doesn't read your post and lump all white people in to the "redneck/idiot/insecure/v ictim mentality/lazy and white category, because we aren't all like you.

THANK GOD!

So where does a hard working average income family get loans for college. I'd like to know. I have a child graduating this year and we make too much money for a grant but not enough to support our family. So where do you go?

You are looking for Stafford Loans, where. If you contact the college financial aid office you will get assistance with it but I would "google" Stafford Loan.

On the TRCC website, under the Student Affairs link on the left you can navigate to their financial aid page and find instructions for pursuing a Stafford Loan

This article was about A+ Scholarships, btw, and how students in Cape area are not using them. It is a media spin to pursuade folks in Cape area to want a community college in their area.

Oh, and BS Man? Since a mind is a terrible thing to waste, thank you for not using yours.

BS man wasn't talking just loans and grants, but scholarships. I carried a 3.8 GPA at TRCC before transferring to ASU. Because I was a white male, scholarships were not an option. If I was black or a single mom with a few kids, well, then the world was my oyster.
While in school, I heard those people complaining about their 2K+ checks for the month coming in a day or two late while I was rolling pennies for gas money.
What is the worst thing in all of this is that the people who don't have the drive to make it on their own can survive with their hands out waiting for something. Guess what, they will be the ones who lead the country in the future because they are the ones who have the resources to get degrees.

Or you can always tell your teenager to have a child if it's a female!! The govt LOVES to take care of irresponsible people!!! I didn't qualify either when I first graduated from high school. They said my parents made too much.(They were JUST getting by). The financial aid office told me they couldn't help me with anything except loans b/c I was not married or had a child...for crying out loud, I was only 18!!! Needless to say, I graduated 4yrs later and owed 15,000 dollars...only b/c I worked 40hrs a week and paid some of it in payment installments to the college as I was going. If I had taken out ALL loans, I would have owed 27,000, and they don't even let you borrow that much for undergrad (or I was told they didn't 5yrs ago when I graduated).

All you have to do is talk to the Academic Counselor at whatever college you want to attend and they will get you in contact with Financial Aid to hook you up, if you are thinking of doing online becareful of some of the credited schools to try and mess with you like University of Phoenix they want you to stay even if you are unhappy and charge you extra money on top of your student loans. They want to tell you that the place where you have your loans won't pay and has backed out or something of the sorts. Just watch out for it. Make the school put it in writting if you can on how many credits you have to have to transfer and what happens if you are not happy with the school and want to leave it to go to a different one. I wish you the best of luck

My child got an A+ scholarship and was never able to use it. We qualified for Pell the first year so her A+ was useless. She worked hard and had good character to earn this scholarship, yet it was never awarded to her.

As a student at the local high school, I think I may be able to shed some light on the fact that hardly any students are taking those scholarships.

Most students, like myself, set their goals very high from a young age because our parents drill it into our heads that we can do whatever we put our minds to. No offense to community colleges because they are still places where you can get a good education, but I can't get a Pre-Med or Pre-Law program at Three Rivers like I could at a school up in St. Louis.

Plus, speaking for myself, I don't really want to stick around this area too much. Part of college is growing up and moving on. I can't have much wiggle room so close to my parents.

"Most area students are passing up tuition-free scholarships to community colleges, administrators say."

Here's why; IT'S COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!! Students who can actually get that scholarship don't want it because Community Colleges suck. Yes, they provide the same education as higher colleges do, BUT they lack the fundimental elements that Universties have. Plus, community colleges have a bad rap. You have a two people, both of equal educations. One went to SMU and the other went to Community college. Both apply for the same job. Guess who will more than likey get the job. You guessed it, the SMU student.

And being a former student myself, I went to community college and hated it. It was dull and boring. I prefered transfering to SMU to get away from this area and to have a little fun while going to school. Three Rivers can't compare to the growing lession I learned from meeting the diverse students and activities offered there.

This is why students are turning down scholarships. It's just worth it to pay for a good college than to get a free pass at a so called "Blank" school.

Oh how I wish I could pound this into my sons head. Get away from here is what I tell him. But you know, parents don't know anything. That's whats in these kids' heads now a days. How I wish so much more for my child.

Whether your child stays or goes that is that person's decision but please make that person be a responsible person. A job for starters and have him/her help on minor bills to teach him/her to value money and not just blow it cause it is there. So many parents do not do this for their children when it comes to college and it hurts that child in the long run due to they expect mommy and daddy to foot the bills and every expense. This way when they have to help with some of the bills (or maybe make them think it and just save the money for them) it will help them in the long run. Plus it teaches them to rely on themselves and if they do not have it to spend then they stay home and not run the streets and throw away all they have ever tried to do by getting into trouble and possibly ending up in jail (GOD forbid that ever to happen) I wish you the best of luck.
