The Obama administration is considering resettling thousands of refugees who left Syria during the country's ongoing civil war to multiple towns and cities across the United States, the L.A. Times reports.

A resettlement plan under discussion in Washington and other capitals is aimed at relieving pressure on Middle Eastern countries straining to support 1.6 million refugees, as well as assisting hard-hit Syrian families.
The State Department is "ready to consider the idea," an official from the department said, if the administration receives a formal request from the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, which is the usual procedure.
The United States usually accepts about half the refugees that the U.N. agency proposes for resettlement. California has historically taken the largest share, but Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia are also popular destinations.

U.N. refugee officials, along with diplomats and non-governmental relief groups, are scheduled to meet in Geneva this week to discuss potential resettlement plans.

U.S. officials are likely to be extra careful with Syrian refugees. As Islamic militants take a more prominent role in the rebel forces, officials worry about fighters with Al Qaeda ties trying to enter the country. Two resettled Iraqis were convicted of trying to send arms to Al Qaeda from their home in Bowling Green, Ky.

New National Security Adviser Susan Rice and President Obama's nominee for U.N. ambassador Samantha Power are both refugee advocates and will likely push for the resettlement.

I wish they would come to Alabama. We need workers to fill the jobs that Mint Julep Southerners won't do.

Don't bet on it. The farmers need cheap labor that Southerners can't handle so they will be happy to put willing and able workers in the field no matter where they come from. Alabama has a big unemployment rate yet there are signs all over the place for workers. Does this tell you something? Go to any restaurant and you will find foreign workers. Go to any hotel and see who is cleaning your room. Look who is doing the landscaping work at the condos in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Why is this? It's because southerners still think that the World owes them a living because a distant relative was a Colonel in the Confederate Army.

Most of that statement is untrue. The muslim situation is severe, they are not here looking for a better life, they are here to destroy our way of life,to make sharia the law of the land, which is not compatible with our Constitution, you and others like you better wake up, follow this blog for a week," Bare Naked Islam" it will show you exactly what they want and what type of people they are.

"they are here to destroy our way of life,to make sharia the law of the land,"

Well, they are not getting very far, are they? They are about as successful as the Baptists are who are in every country trying to convert someone to their religion. They are about as successful as we are in trying to bring Democracy to North Korea, Syria, etc. If you live in a glass house then don't throw stones. Maybe you noticed, but I didn't, where are the marches on Washington by the Muslims to convert the USA to sharia law? Where are the referendums on voting ballots for this law? Where are the Congressmen speaking out in favor of this law? I love Southerners. I just have no use for Southern Rednecks. They are in a class by themselves and something I never experienced living up north. If you were born and raised in the South, you probably don't recognize them but they are a complete different human species that are incapable of adapting to the norms of society. You would think that being around cultured Southerners, something like class and acceptable behavior would rub off on them but that association has absolutely no affect on their behavior.

I totally agree.... and, being a lifelong Southerner, I guess I have learned to ignore them. But I admit they seem to be getting worse, and I hate it when Northerners lump us all together... we're not the same at all.

I hope we aren't neighbors or I will be putting a FOR SALE sign on my house in a New York Minute. FastFred is just an example of the type of stupid Redneck that I described. Fortunately, for the most part, I find Southerners much more congenial and friendly than lots of people up North. Good Southerners are great people to associate with and I love being here because most of them are those kinds of people. By the way, I have relatives in Tennessee and just this winter went to the Grand Ole' Oprey and Gatlinburg. I visit these places as much as I can because they are great. You are fortunate to be a resident of such a nice State.

Ignore who ? It seems like you are easily swayed, he doesn't know what a "Red Neck" is,and that's just for starters. He doesn't know me, and his assumption just like yours is incorrect. His opinions are based on his political beliefs which I disagree with,so if you disagree agree with this Yankee Boy, he uses the term "Red Neck". And you forming a opinion just to appease him about "They are getting worse" is no more than mindless chatter. Explain your worse.

FF, don't get your shorts in a twist. As much as we might not like to admit, there are different classes of people. Some that seem redneck to Give Me are not necessarily redneck to you and me. BUT, there is a class of white trash (and black trash) that go beyond the pale and would be what you and I call redneck, and they are the ones who seem to be getting worse....those are the ones you learn to ignore. Now, if Give Me thinks EVERYONE who is conservative politically is a redneck, then he is sadly mistaken. It all goes back to 'agree with me and you're ok, you're one of us....or disagree, and you're a racist and a redneck'......not true at all. What about people from Give Me's North who don't like Obama?....are they racists and rednecks too? FF, does that make sense? I'm Southern, a conservative, upper-middleclass, I drive a Lexus, belong to a country club and play golf, make good money, have a 3500 sq. ft. house, and classy, Southern friends who have money, old money....am I a redneck just because I'm conservative and don't like Obama's politics? I couldn't care less about the color of his skin, I care about his character and his political beliefs.

One thing to remember about Obama is...he's half white.

Probably most of them are. Believe me, many people up North were mortified that a Black Man (actually 1/2 White--but that doesn't count with those people), became President. Of course, they, like Southerners, would never admit to anyone that they don't like him because of his race so they just profess to dislike him because of his politics. The one big difference between the North and the South is that there are a few Swing States up North and none in the South (Florida is not really a real Southern State in my estimation). That shows me that at least some Northerners are not embarrassed to say that they approve of Obama whereas I believe that most Southerners feel that they would be thrown out of the Baptist church if they were discovered to be an Obama Supporter rather than an Obama Basher.

I do. It's nice to know that a Southerner on this blog has more than just a gun-rack on the back window of their pickup truck and a bumper sticker that reads: "I don't call 911".
