It is time for all services to go paid. We are prehospital Medical Professionals and should be paid for our time and efforts. So many communitys have abused their volunteers and even paid people that many of the best in my profession have chosen to find a new profession. It is time your community wakes up and gets its prioritys straight and have a paid professional service. The small town I work for pays Paramedics $20/hr and EMT-Basics $15/hr, with great benefits. We run aprox. 100 calls per year. Your community can find the money to do the same if their prioritys are in the right place.

I am not buying it, if you were so dedicated to being a Volunteer, you would have continued to do so. The "Big Picture" that is used to determine how much and when to begin a fee for service is complicated. EMS is a very expensive field to run with equipment and training, not to mention the other operational costs. I am all for maximizing your potential revenue to continue to ensure you are providing the best possible patient care. Volunteering doesn't mean they should not be billed for the service, and I would have to question how strong your "Sense of Volunteerism" really was if you could be so easily dissuaded from continuing to serve the citizens of your town.
