Funny that this site is called "Second" life...as if those who use it have a "first" life.

Caution is certainly needed. And as more social platforms are created and easily accessable, due diligence must be carried out by parents.

While your statement "... falling victim to predators are substantially higher" is true. It does not mean that is what is occuring. It is far more likely to die in a plane crash after planes were invented. Howver, they remain the safest form of transporation.

Unfortunatly, some people interpret statements like that as what the reality is. A quick search online reveals that sexual predation online is down and has been decreasing.

If anyone wants to see the real data on this, I would recommend looking at the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire.

*oh crud, there is a zoo within 30 miles of me, I have a substantially higher chance of being eaten by a tiger*

Not making light of this, but pointing out that perspective is needed. With good information, people can make better decisions and approach challenges such as online perils and succeed.

Next the federal government will tell me that plastic drop cloths and duct tape will protect me from bioterrorism! Anyone want to hide under desks and survive nuclear war?:)

lol on the "as if those" comment. must be the same silly people that post responses to blogs!

Second Life is just another web platform, it would be tantamount to equating this web site to being analogous to the zillion porn sites online.

It attracts many people due to the 1.5 million dollars that change hands daily (it's actually much more since PayPal transactions between residents is not tracked).

Good luck with the reporting, it was an interesting read.:)
