I applaud the winners and am sure they did a great job.
As for the rules, our local school judges and parents did not even have a copy of the rules at the contest or know them.
My son spelled a homonym (alternate spelling) correctly which is perfectly acceptable by the rules if not used in a sentence or given a definition. He was disqualified even after my appeal. The judges did not know the rule.
Later my son received a handwritten apology from
the local school administrators (judges) and a promise to tighten up the rules next year. That doesn't do him any good now.
It is important to teach kids to lose gracefully but it is just as important to teach them to stick
up for themselves when they know they are right.
Wow. This is awful. These kids work soo hard for this all year. The adults need to put in a little more preparation to make the experience as worthwhile as it can be. Don't get me wrong, the winner was excellent. But no one benefits more than the winner from being in a contest without flaws.

Next year, they need to rethink the philosophy of celebrity judges in favor of some more acedemic ones!

I believe KNOWING THE RULES was referring to the school spelling bee and not the bee at the Sheraton. The rules were in the program they gave out to everyone and the judges had a copy of the rules too. I think they did a great job. I am glad they are willing to volunteer their time to help our kids succeed.

The rules handed out in the program stated that in order to win the champion first was supposed to spell the word the runner-up missed, and then spell a new word. That is not what they did. They gave the champion two new words. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the winner would still be the winner. She didn't miss a beat, and seemed to know every word cold. But your observations about the rules being followed are simply not accurate.

AAWWW thanks!!!

Also to Just Saying, yeah, I was surprised to because I thought that i was supposed to spell the same words again, but I got neew words. I was a little conpused, but I just went with it because I thought that maybe at the regional spelling bee the rules might be a little different.
