I thought that I had seen in this morning's news that an off-duty Bolingbrook police officer was critical after hitting a tree in a bad car crash. I don't remember seeing anyone else involved in the crash. Did anyone else hear about this, as I don't see it anywhere in the written news yet? How is the officer? Do they know how the accident happened?

Ofc. Mitchem will be making a full recovery I am very happy to report! Yes toxicology was done and NO, he was not intoxicated to head off any speculation. This was a one car accident and due to the severity of the crash, he has no recollection of the incident. The crash is being "reconstructed" so that it is possible to determine the cause. We had many one car crashes over those two nights involving cars losing control on small patches of "black ice". I will not elaborate on injuries, recovery time, etc., because these details do not need to be made public, but rest assured, he WILL be back. He is a stand up young Officer with a wonderful family that has made a very positive impact in the community. Please keep him in your prayers.

Hey, Copper, long time...no talk to. Hope you are doing well. Thanks for the info, I hope the officer makes a full and speed recovery.

In another forum, a poster did bring up a good point, however, and that was how the accident was so severe seeing as the speed limit in that particular neighborhood was only 25 MPH. I'm not saying that the officer did anything wrong, however, if you find out any further info on the cause, please share with us. It would help to educate us on what to do/not to do when it's so slick so that the same thing doesn't happen to any of us.

Hey, I totalled a car years ago when my car hydoplaned years in bad weather, so I know how dangerous conditions can be. I was going 55 MPH, however.

Will do...hopefully the reconstruction will lead to some answers. Here is what alot of people don't know because they don't see it everyday, but what people think are "low" speeds in terms of crashes, say 25-30 mph, can still be VERY devastating. What made it bad was his drivers side hit the tree, the car slid sideways. So picture going 25-30 mph, slide, then you go sideways and a tree is just 10 feet off the road. No time to slow down, move, etc. A sideways crash at 25 mph will still be hideous. The next time you are driving down a side street, here is a little test to see how "fast" even 25 mph can be. Pick out a tree on the side of the road (now DON'T crash yourself...lol), keep a look at the tree and as you PASS it, look at how fast the tree goes passed your car. Now think about how damaging and jarring it would be to have gone from 30-0 mph in .2 seconds. It is called rapid deceleration, meaning you come to a stop VERY fast. This is what does the damage alot of time, head injuries, blackouts, whip lash, etc. So if it was a head on crash, might have not been so bad. He was in a VERY compact car, and when it hit the tree, the car basically bent as a U around the tree. The fact he wasn't MORE injured might be an indicator he wasn't more injured. He has no internal or head injuries. Alot of times people feel safe in their "cocoon" of a car not really knowing how bad even a "low" speed crash can end. Be safe all, tonight it will be REAL bad with the falling temps and the ton of melted snow and rain out there!!!
