As far as i'm concerned, Brent Hassert needs to be voted out of office. His last big mistake was voting for the smoking ban. I'm tired of our rights being taken away by politicians who don't care about the effects these laws have on business owners. My business has gone down hill since this ban.

I think most encumbents should be voted out, but we disagree about the smoking ban. I think it is great that I can actually go into a restaurant or a bar and not have to immediately come home and get a shower and dry clean my clothes because of the stench. Sorry it has hurt your business.

So we should forget all that Brent has done for the Village of Romeoville? We should vote for McAsey who has no experience in government at all. We shoud lvote for a Michael Madigan puppet that will vote for everything that he asks her to vote for and NOT what we want as constiuents? The only reason she is running at all is because of Michael Madigan (who voted for the smoking ban as well) and told her that he would finance the compaign. We should vote for a candidate who refuses to debate the issues at all? She never even acknowledged the request. She chose to ignore the challenge to debate and hide from the people she would like to represent. As a citizen in the district that she hopes to represent I have never even seen her at any of the events so far, so how can I vote for someone I don't know, don't know what she believes in or even one plan that she hopes to accomplish once in springfield.
I may be voting against my party in November in several contests but this is one that is a no brainer. VOTE Brent Hassert!

I have met Emily McAsey several times at different functions. I don't know where you live Disappointed but Emily is always in my neighborhood in Lockport knocking on doors and talking to residents.

I haven't seen Brent Hassert once in all my years here and I'm a Republican.

Has anyone else received the Hassert campaign mailings where he tries to tie McAsey to both Madigan and Blago? That's a trick if you can pull off that relationship considering they hate each other.

I agree that incumbents should move on. We need term limits. Mr. Hassert has done a good job for us, but he needs to move on and let someone else do it for a while.

Let's see:

Madigan is a Democrat

Blago is a Democrat

McAsey is a Democrat

I guess there isn't any connection is there?

I agree with most of you. We need term limits and although I have no complaints about Hassert, I will vote for Emily. She has knocked on my door several times also. In 15 years I have never seen Hassert at my door. As far as I'm concerned the less experience in government the better. We need more common sense every day people and less governement experience.

I'm also for term limits. However, at this time Illinois doesn't have term limits. I've written and spoken to Brent many times over his career. Have I agreed with every position over the years? No. But at least he has been an opposition voice to most of the crap Madigan, Jones and recently Blago. I just don't know how a Democrat recommending change in Springfield can change anything. Any new Democrat will be required to fall in lock-step as long as Madigan and Cook County Democrat pals are running the show. I just don't know if McAsey can break down the wall power.

We do have an opportunity to vote yes or no for a Constitiutional Convention in Illinois. The current constitution requires that every 20 years the people of Illinois are asked that question. I would like to see a constitutional convention for no other reason than to impose term limits on elected state officials.

So you support term limits, but since they are not part of Illinois law you will vote to keep an elected official in office longer. If you support term limits then refuse to vote for politicans that wish to stay in office for longer than you feel is appropriate.

Your view is consistent with most Americans though, which is why we do not have term limits in most states. The majority of people support term limits, but also support re-electing their own representative endlessly. We all seem to only want to term limit other people's representatives or the theoretical politician. Show some backbone and toss the incumbent out. If you don't like the alternative take it up with the Republican party that supported Hassert for another term.

I am not sure who I am going to vote for, but I feel the Brent has represented his district well. I disagree on some of the things he has done becuase he has been focused on bringing the bucks to his district instead of the well being of the State as a whole. That is how things work though and it is hard to fault someone for watching out for his constituents when no one else would. I will be taking a good look at McAsey though before making my decision. I would like to be able to vote for change and a new person in Springfield, but I also want to make sure whomever we elect can do the job.

It's not my vote that I am worried about. It is the dumb idiots that vote a straight ticket or keep voting the same idiots in again and again.

Change is good. Has anyone seen a list of which members added pork onto the bail out last week? I would love to see who added the $150 billion. They should definitely be voted out.

Oops, don't want to stop my rant yet. Let's not forget the Black Caucus that voted it down the first time because it didn't have a bankruptcy clause in it (even though their constituents are beneifiting too) and the Michigan members who voted it down the first time (even though they all voted for the auto bailout earlier). All of these folks should be tossed out.

If you look at the senate and the house, who is in control? The pols from chicago are in the leadership positions. Look at Cook county and see what's going on there. Putting a neophyte democrat in office will not change anything downstate. We need to get Chicago pols out of our state government, and for that matter the Federal government.

Hassert might not be at my front door, but when I have contacted him, he replies with more than just a *form letter* and also emails, sends out questionnaires holds multiple town meetings and tries hard to listen to people and also to report what is up for vote and asks for comments.

I don't, nor have I EVER gotten such communication from ANY public official.

Let' see if I get this right....Because of the desire for term limits we are going to vote out every incumbent no matter what they have done or their record? How does that make any sense? I am a dissapointed republican in this area but that's kind of like throwing out the baby with the bathwater isn't it? I have never voted a straight ticket. I have always voted for the person that I thought was the best candidate for the job. As a one time candidate myself, I worked with both sides to get the perspective of all the people I wanted to represent. An informed decision is the best decision. Just because a person makes a decision that you don't necesarrily agree with, doesn't maked that person less decisive than you. It just makes his decisions different than what you would do. AS far as Brent stopping by every house over the years...I do believe that it was the democratic party and Michael Madigan that lead the new district mapping just a few years ago that gave Brent a whole new area to represent than he had for many years. That re-mapping also effected Jim Meyer's district and forced him into areas that he had never been in before. It seems that if they don't get the votes in a certain area then they redraw the boundaries to get more voters their way. Now, Emily McAsey has been walking in Lockport (Gee an area very familiar to her) but has yet to accept a debate in any area outside of Lockport, why is that? The Democrats are complaining about negative ads? Have you seen the mailers that Emily has been sending out? Oh Yeah...she hasn't been sending them they have come from Springfield (check the postmarks)! I wonder who is working on that marketing campaign? How is this change? How is this different? It was just a few years ago that the people of Cook County were moving into Will county because of the problems that Cook county was having and NOW they want to elect the same party into control of Will County and other offices. THe definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Don't you think putting the party that screwed up cook county in charge of the will county area will bring the same results as they had in Cook county? Voting a straight ticket is never a good idea...likewise voting out every incumbent is not a good idea either. Can you imagine springfield with ZERO experience? What would get done then? Who would know what needs to be done or finished on pending legislation? Who would know the history of a pending Bill? If the sponsor of that Bill was no longer in office could the Bill even proceed from committee? We need experience, but in a way that goes back to why I got involved in Politics in the first place and that is "service" and "representation". When I served I tried to represent the wishes and desires of the people within the district that I served. Once I got elected it was no longer about "sides" but more about solving problems that existed and staying out of future problems with fiscal repsonsibility and respect for the taxpayers. That is what Brent is all about as well. I know him personally and I know him from politics and I think I know him from his voting records from the time he was on the Will County Board to the present. He has been and always will be about his constituents. He lives a modest life in a modest townhome, drives a Chevy not a Mercedes, most of the time he drives himself to springfield (unless an immediate call back to springfield, he holds town hall meetings throughout the years and not just during campaigns, he meets with homeowner associations and not just big political functions, he votes for the concerns of Will County and the district he respresents. When he sees money available for grants he makes sure they are spread out over the entire district, for the schools, the cities and the parks. Brent is one of the few republicans that I am not dissapointed with. Vote for Brent!

Darren, you need to get your news from more than the Bugle. Madigan and Blago have been at each other's throats for years now. It doesn't matter that their both Democrats. Seriously, have you been that out of touch?

Darren, did you have to hold that hair really tight to split it? Before you reply to this, go back and read what was written prior.

Just because they are all Democrats, doesn't mean they are all the same or even all connected to each other. You use a partisan logic that would probably hold up anywhere except Illinois.

I've already agreed that Hassert has done a lot for us (again, reading before writing is an excellent habit), but I also understand that trying to tie McAsey to both Madigan and Blago is a fool's errand. It aims to grab the partisan partyline Republicans like you seem to be. Most independents like myself are equally disgusted with each party, so because we pay attention and see things for what they are, we do not appreciate his campaign material - it is misleading.

If I am wrong about your politics, please accept my apology.

TJP I think you and I are generally in agreement.

My point was addressed in post #8. I don't know a thing about McAsey other than what I have received in the mail. I recall that she wants to go to Springfield to seek reform. Her TV ads also spoke about going to Springfield to reform.

I'm all for reform.

However, I just don't believe that if elected she will be able to get the reform we all desire. I don't doubt her ambition or her sincerity. I have no opinion about whether she would be better or worse than Hassert.

But she is a Democrat.

That means in order to have any influence in Springfield she will have to follow the orders of the Chicago/Cook County Democrats. They make the rules. They always have and they always will. That's the reality of how Springfield works. Which in reality means she won't be able to get the reform we all desire.

I just believe that a freshman Republican at least will be able to say no. Even if the "no" is partisan. An incumbant is even better. At least they should have a track record of saying "no".

What sucks is that the average person in Illinois gets screwed everyday by Springfield. We do have a chance to vote for a Constitutional Convention on November 4. I add term limits to the State Constitution.

Then a new person, regardless of party affiliation will at least have a shot at reforming the current mess.
