I am in the market for buying a house to live in. After searching around, I have narrowed myself down to CBH homes in the SW Boise area (near the airport). I just like the general forum's opinion about the quality of their homes.
I am more concerned about the structural integrity of the house. Such things as plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems/materials that he use. Do they last only few years and need to be replaced or do they last a long time? I am not too concerned about the aestetics of the inside, such things as cabinets or granite countertops and such. I just want to know the quality of the "guts" of the CBH houses.
Are they also being bought out/bankrupt or is that just rumors from competitors who are jealous of their clout in Idaho.
Any comment is appreciated. Their properties prices are a steal, comparing to the general market at the moment.
I really hate to dis on any 1 but I used to be a sub contractor for Corey barton. You couldn't, give me a million dollars to live in 1 of his pieces of JUNK...... I know what's behind those walls, or better yet what'sNOT there..

I have never lived in one. My friend has a CBH home though. I didn't see his house get built. But I noticed when his neighbors house was built that the OSB was in a grid pattern on the side of the house. This is a terrible way to build a house as far as structural integrity goes. When you stack OSB on top of each other like that it gives the house poor sheer. Meaning it will sway from side to side easily. OSB is to be staggered to give the house better structural integrity. This Im sure is just one of many corners that they cut......

I have been viewing CBH homes in the boise area for retirement. Mostly patio homes. There are limited over 55 communities in Boise and I was thinking this might be a good alternative. I am just not sure. If anyone has comments about the quality of these homes please share. thx

I just learned that I'm the 4th owner of a Corey Barton house. I pay HOA fees and get nothing in return but harrassment- no parks, walking paths, and the covenants aren;t enforced. However, the property manager who heads the HOA frequently sends letters to my neighbor and me about our yards, which happen to be the best cared for on the block. There is no limit to rentals in the area, so while I pay a mortgage, the people around me don't, and have no interest in maintaining the properties. Absent landlords? In abundance. Unfenced canals? Oh, yeah. When I moved in, I asked for copies of hte covenants, which stated that cars would not be parked on the street, and that vehicles left on the street for longer than 72 hours would be towed as abandoned vehicles. There is a covnenant that front yards must be landscaped immediately, and back yards seeded within 18 months. One of my neighbors' yards is still a mud hole, so he lets his dog out to crap in my yard. Another neighbor is a rental, and has weeds as high as the fence. Wherfe's the covenant enforcement?

As far as the quality of the home, the floor plan has a lot of unuseable space, the kitchen is impossible to seriously cook in, and I've spent the past 4 years repairing the house. This week, the heat pump broke. I have a leak under my bathroom sink, the threshold on the only real door has dry rot, and the windows leak air. The first winter I lived here, I touched the window frame, and the window almost fell out- It seems that it wasn't attached to the frame. As soon as I can, I intend to sell this money pit and build.

The only thing harder than buying a CBH is selling one. They framed our French doors crooked and carpeted over a huge hole in the floor. We caught that one before closing so they had to fix it. Also, some insulation or puddly of some sort was flushed down our toilet during the construction of the house. The toilet never worked correctly. Finally, after 6 years of a semi-working toilet my husband replaced the toilet and found the " mystery crap" in the trap of the toilet. It is a cute house, just not quality.

yea, my CBH driveway cracked after a year. After 3 years decided to replace, wanted to expand anyway. Found out why the driveway cracked, not enough cuts in the cement, plus nothing but dirt and sand for a base. Pulled up the cement and found nothing but mud, cost an extra thousand to fix their poor workmanship. If you have a crack before the one year warranty is up, make them replace. Otherwise, rest of house is great, Had a contractor friend review the work daily. He saw no problems.
