I would never recommend this neurologist. Let me say the only reason my doc even sent me to this guy in the first place is because her first choice -- Dr. River -- was booked out five months and I really needed to see someone. Dr. O'Brien could get me in three days later. After seeing him, I can completely understand why his schedule is so open.

The first thing he told me when I sat down was that he was approaching this from a psychiatric perspective -- that's fine, if I was paying for a psychiatrist! But I paid for a neurology consult and that's what I wanted! I suffer from chronic daily headaches and have for over ten years. He didn't believe me when I told him my headaches were not confined to a single spot, and said if they really hurt as much as I said then I'd know where they were located. When I gave an example of where my headache was at that moment, he leapt to the conclusion that's where they were all the time and diagnosed my headaches as tension-related. He told me the solution would be to simply lose a little weight and get a hobby -- problem solved! Somehow all the doctors I'd seen over the years just hadn't figured it out?! This guy is a total nut-job. He would not listen when I told him that even at my healthiest weight, and when I had the least stress in my life, I was still having these headaches. He was sure he'd found the solution, so no need to look any further. When I asked about possible preventive medications, he mentioned there was one he thought might be effective, but he didn't want to prescribe it for me. And regarding the pain medications I was currently taking -- also known as the only things that were currently making it possible for me to function -- he said to go ahead and stop taking those cold turkey, because that plan to lose weight and get a hobby was obviously iron-clad, and everyone knows that losing weight happens overnight, right? So clearly that would kick in immediately, and I'd be able to keep working and living without interruption.

Neurologists are supposed to use actual diagnostic means to get to the root of your problem -- blood work, MRIs, etc.-- not just pretending they have a psychiatric degree. This guy even went so far as to speculate about why I was sitting with my legs crossed a particular way and how I phrased responses to questions. After ten minutes, I felt incredibly uncomfortable and knew that he was going to criticize every answer that came out of my mouth. It felt like I was being interrogated!

Save yourself the time and money and find another neurologist.

In contrast, I had a wonderful experience with Dr. O'Brien. I had had a stroke and I was sent to him to determine if I had any permanent nerve damage. He went through all the cranial nerves, one at a time. Some of the exercises I could do, some I could not. I spent 2.5 hours with him. He told me things about my body that my own Internist had missed. Like a heart Murmur. One of the things I really liked about him is he faced me and talked to me. The Internist always faces the computer and types, in otherwords he wasn't watching me.
Dr. O'Brien is semi retired doing evaluations for Social Security, Insurance Companies and other Doctors. I found him to be outstanding. I wish he was still in a full time practice, I would like to be able to have him look over my health records periodically to find out what the Internists are missing.
