When death isn't immediate, cases are not as clear-cut

Most homicide victims die shortly after their assault. But homicide sometimes has a way of burrowing itself inside a victim for years, or decades, before heaving its final blow.
These are cases known as 'delayed homicides' where victims are struck, shot, or stabbed and develop complications that lead to their death. The Medical Examiner's Office makes the determination, and it's not always a popular one.
Delayed homicides can make it look like the annual homicide rate has increased, experts say. Exact records on delayed homicides are not kept in Palm Beach County. Read more
