Simon's not in the business of paying out money. They're in the business of raking it in! Just ask their tenants how much they have to pay, and why mall prices are so much higher than other stores.

Why arent these guys and gals armed? You see them wearing a look alike cop uniform but they carry no guns. Whats the point? I have a friend of mine that works in a state hospital here in Indiana and they also will not allow the outside officers to carry any weapons, not even mace! I can understand not having these items inside a correctional facility or mental hospital but what is the point of having folks dress up like cops and not give them any way of protecting themselves of the people they are supposed to serve. Welcome comments on this one.

hmmm. the chief asking the business to pay money for more protection. MAYBE the chief should spend some of their commercial tax dollars to put extra patrols in the area. Other cities have put sub station in the malls.

Perhaps the Simons can send some of their gun-toting Indiana Pacers players down there during the off season to earn some extra spending money?

Simon contracts with IPC International. The officers are great and I used to work for them at Castleton Square, but the company is a complete joke. They don't want any officer doing anything but driving in circles with all of their yellow lights on. Don't be so critical of security officers in general, it's the security company and in particular IPC International that makes a killing. They could care less about your protection or security. They just want to have people wearing impractical uniforms walking around scanning checkpoints so that (a) you feel warm and fuzzy and secure and (b) so that if any crime occurs that might be a liability, they can pull a report of checkpoints and say that security was there to limit their being sued.

The security guards at Castleton Square work very hard despite a company that could care less about it's employees or your safety. Guards tried to get pepper spray and/or an expandable baton for at least their own safety and offered to pay for certification and IPC shot that idea down into flames because of liability. The concept of mall security from IPC's point of view as well as Simon is to walk around robotically and scan points with an automated PDA device for the purpose of showing that an unarmed security guard was there and the corresponding time. But, they aren't there to do ANYTHING else. It's a total dog and pony show and the sad thing is, there is some really good talent and some fine folks that want to do a good job of making the mall a safe and solid environment to be in.

I lost count of the typos, grammatical errors and lack of punctuation in this post. This lends credence to Indiana ranking near last in education.

So true, Simon Sucks. It is amazing how they manage to get away with this. If you consider the fact the the foot traffic in any major mall is 10 times the annual count of a Class 2 City, it is bewildering that they don't take these things more seriously. And, anyone that doesn't live under a rock knows of several mall related shootings in recent years. Even college campuses with smaller population counts have armed guards or police on patrol 24/7. It's just a show where they tie the hands of the people they hire and put in a uniform. Good points though.

No private business is obligated to provide security. No individual is obligated to shop at an insecure business.

Towns collect property taxes on Simon Properties.

Towns collect sales tax rev on Simon Properties.

There is no law preventing officers from patrolling around malls. Get off your rear and patrol it if it need patrolled instead of whining for Simon to hire more officers for you.

I held a part time job at Washington Square Mall for the holiday seasons of '03,'04, and '05. The Security guards .....well they ahd a few good eggs but mostly those guys don't care. They brought us a copy of the lease agreement stating that Security is for COMMON MALL AREAS ONLY, to preserve the safety of the mall NOT the individual stores. If we had a shoplifter our corporate police was that they had to "leave the store with the observed stolen items" before it was technically theft, therefore illegal. But mall security said it's not their problem once someone steps into the mall itself, what happened in the store isn't their problem. And we, as store employees, were NOT ALLOWED to APPREHEND the person who just ripped us off. What????

As long as you weren't drunk or fighting or (gasp) smoking the mall security didn't do squat. They had 2 guys who DID help out and got fired for it. People were brutally attacked during christmas in the parkinglot and they did nothing. And the mall stays open extra late so WE have to stay, it's part of the lease agreement, if you shut your gate before their announcement you get a fine. Regardless of weather.

The BEST part? Security drives around in nice cozy SUVs while we employees are scraping the ice off our vehicles and sometimes diging the snow out from around our cars (usually with our hands) and they just rive by slowly, in the dark, glaring at us.

I won't condem ALL the guards as bad but they replaced all the good ones quickly with really old men and useless kids who didn't know the meaning of work. I am SO glad my store moved out of there so if I decide to pick up some extra cash again next christmas I don't have to work in a simon mall.
