Great idea...annex some more areas you can't provide service for, promise them the taxes won't go up, and then stick it to 'em...Boca Raton..."The Rat's Mouth"....no kidding....

$100,000 per year firemen,
$7,000 per month pensions paid to healthy 45 year olds not to work is not penny pinching in a way.

Let AMR do the EMS and save billions of dollars.

There should not be a fire station on the beach. This property should be sold and property taxes should be collected for the city on it.

Government is rewarded when they waste taxpayer’s money.

Firemen spend their day at Publix (all the time), watch TV and sleep on the job.

AMR will do a better job at 1/4 of the cost. Firemen are nothing but a bunch of overpaid ambulance drivers.

LBS is saving over $800 per household by having AMR do the EMS job, Boca should do the same. I hope Palm Beach county follows the lead of LBTS.

The wealthy unincorporated area includes 9 nursing homes that abuse the 911 system to the tune of close to 6000 calls a year. If response times are a concern then that equates to 2 full stations in that area. Seeing the type of "Boca" typical "Wretched Excess" type of fire stations It will be interesting how you will sell that to the tax payer and even more interesting how you will sell it to Fire Rescue. Good luck Boca.

I have to agree that there less expensive ways of providing fire and EMS service, but really my friend, your "estimates" (I'm being nice) are ridiculous!

If you want your message to be taken seriously you need to support those claims or come down to earth with those savings estimates.

I've read your posts all over and under different names (so obvious by the language) and while you may have point your delivery and substance leaves a lot to be desired.

The only reason AMR has employees for the piddly wages they pay are they are guys waiting to get into a fire department or still in school - or losers like you who obviously the fire department didnt want - so you spend your days posting bad things about them - give it up already - not everything has to do with firemen! i would rather have happy firemen than a new library!

I think Boca is being fiscally responsible... Times are getting very tough and at LEAST they are being pro active.

I am not clear on fireman issues and financial facts.... but do not say things bad about them lest it is your house burning down...... You will feel differently then.

I'm confused. Boca officials are talking about how tough things are yet on this same web page they're talking to developers about a mega-million dollar ice skating rink? Geez, these politicians really don't get it.

If money is tight do what the rest of us do stop spending. We can get by without another new library and a another new fire station. Get rid of the dead weight employees who are clock watchers and the ones who hide until it's time to go home, Boca is one of the only cities whose firemen work 1 day and are off 3 days. In most other cities the Firemen work 1 day and are off 2 days. If Boca went to this system think how much money it would save. If I ran my business the way Boca runs the city, I would be bankrupt in less that a year, unless I had no competition and an endless supply of tax dollars. Come on Boca lets tighten our belts for once.

Palm Beach County Fire / EMS budget is over $270 million per year for 1,400 employees. Most of all the money goes to salaries and benefits, you do the math. The COST TO TAXPAYERS IS JUST ABOUT $200,000 PER FIREMEN. It costs a lot of money to take a $450,000 , 4 mile per gallon truck to Publix 3 times a day. It takes 4 firemen over an hour to go shopping. This is a huge waste of taxpayers money.

Call Publix,
Your points are so exaggerated that your whole argument becomes moot.
I'm sure that you would say that the US Navy spends their time playing on the water.
Or that Astronauts spend all their time looking out a window.
Get over the fact that you failed the Firefighters test. Move on with your life and learn to accept the fact that others have jobs you don't.
And no, I'm not a firefighter.
Never wanted to be one. Not my thing.

How about bringing up the fact that Boca just pizzed away millions building a library that was way too excessive ?
But I guess you never failed the Librarians test.

GOVERNMENT SUX

They have been reaping the rewards of higher property taxes for years. Now one time property values go down and the struggling homeowner is suppose to get a break, they immediately look to raise taxes or "fees" some where else.

God help us.

We all have to admit we're going through tough times. However, I feel that the politically connected decisions the City of Boca Raton has made in the past had made things more difficult. For example, the City use to hold all of its events at the Mizner Amphitheatre many years ago..which is on City land. A few years back, some "intelligent" councilmember decided to give the Center for the Arts the rights to the amphitheatre...which they then built the new amphitheatre at. So..long story short...the City now has to pay CFA for doing their events on City land...go figure. Not to mention of course the attractive funds CFA collects from paying concert goers to see famous acts...which the City could have done on their own and KEPT THE PROFITS.

In my opinion, this comes from a City Manager that is a great accountant...but not a good leader. He has given up opportunity after opportunity to build funds from a soceity that is willing to pay for certain big concerts or services...not to metion maybe putting up sponsorship banners in the ball fields (which would help local busnesses), and maybe even some parking meters to help elliminate the financial crunch.

Any other suggestions???

AMR= Amateur Medical Response. NO THANK YOU! Although it is a little rediculous that Boca has to double up certain services that the county already provides such as SWAT and Hazmat.

Yep, the city is looking to annex the wealthy area up to the turnpike. They have their eyes on the Woodfield County Club area with their large homes to increase their tax base. Who in their right minds living in this area would approve this annexation?? Living in the unincorporated area you are paying less taxes than living in the city area. Today, people are voting with their pocketbooks in mind and not with location in mind. Remember when the city tried to have the area west of them to drop Boca Raton from their address and replace it with West Boca because of the location. Now they want to annex just for the money. Annexation means increase in services to this area and that translates into tax increase to build more firehouses and increase police response.

The sad fact is, the city council is unresponsive to the general needs of the majority of the citizens.

They hold elections when most cannot get off to vote or have less interest due to the low noise level of city politics. See where the yard signs sprout up ...

The city council attracts the same old same old, which is an indictment of lack of interest - if the shoe doesn't cause pain, it will be worn forever.

Right now, the city has sunk to the point where it is a beautiful, polished apple with parts of it infested by greedy worms. When the taste starts spreading, things will begin to happen.

Unfortunately, it will be too late.

Adios Boca, the last words of many an original resident from the 50s & 60s, is being uttered my many of those that moved here in the 70s and 80s.

Soon there will only be those that have retired from the northeastern US and the solid culture of the mid-west rooted post-war founders and their progeny will have evaporated into the mists of the mountains of Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Tax that Mayor Welchel.
