No harm to you or anyone else but, I wouldn't leave my child with anyone that wasn't able to drive. In case something happens you would be able to take the child to the hospital. So I would say at least 16. Not unless someone next door was going to be home in case something happen I would say 13 and up.

Ive seen 14 year old girls babysit (one of my babysitters was 14 when I was little). I havent read any particular law, but Im willing to wager the child support office might be able to give you some better specifics than I can.

some babysitters take your car and leave your kids unattended when they sneak out---not good

i think the sitter has to be at least 12, but i would reccomend older. but 12 is, i think...the age legally. aything under thatand it's considered endangering the welfare of a minor.

Actually 10 is the age. Anything younger than that is illegal. I remember staying by myself when I was 7 or 8, but that was a LONG time ago.

I love my child to much to leave them with a child! The babysitter needs to be able to drive, my babysitter started when she was 16 for me, after she go her drivers license. That way if anything happens, she can drive them to the hospital or wherever they need to go.

My daughter started sitting for neighbors when she was 12 - but we were here at the house on the next street over - our house backs up to theirs. She started sitting with us away when she was 13. The driving thing doesn't worry me - actually hadn't crossed my mind. She knows about 911 which I would prefer her to call even at the age of 16 than strap an injured kid into a car and zip off to the hospital. Teen drivers scare me when they are thinking clearly - if teens think clearly at all. lol But I hate to think of the panic one would feel driving a child to a hospital. We also live in a neighborhood where there would definitely be half a dozen neighbors home if she needed help. JMO

I agree with you! I started babysitting when I was 13. We had an agreement thatI would wall 911 first, then the parent.

10 is the legal age for a child to stay by themself without an adult present, but there is not a law regarding other children being present.

This true Arkansas does not have a law, I would not let my kids stay with anyone that is not able to drive. In return the age has to do with how responsible the babysitter is. H&ll there are some 30 year old I would not leave my kids with.

I agree, my babysitter is a very responsible 17 year old girl, i have known her all my life or I would never leave my child with her. Anyone leaving their child with a 10-12 year old is crazy, they are children themselves!!

The first time we left our daughter with a sitter, it was a 'responsible' 17 y.o. All she did was make sure that my daughter didnt kill herself. She was way more interested in the cell phone, tv, anything but watching or playing with my daughter. Next 16 year old... same thing. One after that.... sigh... same thing.
One of my good friends had a 13 y.o. that was also very responsible and we decided to give her a try even though she seemed young. BEST SITTER WE'VE EVER HAD!!! Not only did she watch her, she played with her, did projects with her. We used her until she got out of high school and still miss her terribly. If we told her that our daughter was to clean her room before tv, it got done! I think it depends on the kid. But it also seems to me that when kids get old enough to drive, they've got anything on their minds besides truly 'sitting' a little kid. And these were all 'responsible, good kids'.
So I say let your instinct tell you what is best for you and your kids. I dont think there is a right or wrong. And I also don't think it is nice at all to say someone is 'crazy','out of their mind' or 'doesnt care about their children' if they use someone that can't drive.

not just because they cannot drive, but they are children themselves. Who is going to watch over them?

Last time I checked, 16+ y.o.'s were also children. Now, I'm not saying leave a small child with a 10 y.o. I think that is too young also. But I think a 12/13 y.o. has the potential of being old enough to babysit a smaller child. Not all of them, but many do. You would definitely need to know the child well - as with any age of babysitter. I agree with the above person - there are 30 y.o.s that I wouldnt leave my kids with. I think age is relative in it. Maturity is the bigger criteria.

I was wondering about all of these regulations. I left my son with my nephew for about 20 minutes. My nephew is almost 12 and my son was asleep. Hes very responsible and very familar with what to do in an emergency etc. I know my best friend leaves her youngest daughter with her oldest daughter, and I personally think my nephew is more responsible and mature.

i think the age to babysit yourself is 13 or 14. i ask my mom what age you have to be to babysit yourself. then she called her freind, vikki, and vikki said at the age of 14 or 13. but i'm still not sure at what age.
