I happen to rememmber several citizens forming a committe to promote a racetrack here in Blytheville. One of them was a well known police officer here in town.

They organized, collected thousands of signatures, took ads out in the newspaper, collected donations from businesses, and presented their ideas to the City as well as the BGRAA.

It was well supported, well presented, and well organized.

You know what they got for all their efforts?
A slap in the face and a kick in the rear when they were turned down.

So you "local soap box preachers" on this sight need to remember that. You can preach all the "get involved" crap you want, but unless the powers that be agree with it,(or can scam some money out of it), it has no chance.

The interesting thing is, NO TAXES would be involved, a variety of recreational activity would be made available AND more of the old base would be put to use. Seriously, I don't see why it didn't come about.

How many people reside in Westminster Village? Does not the Airport Authority want to see the base put to use? Being within the city limits (as well as the county/region), wouldn't a "bigger" view be taken, such as when the area tries to lure new industries, tourists or what-have-you?
"Airport" is one of the biggest parts of that complex that I see, yet what commercial, freight or passenger activity is going on? It would seem a natural from the time the closure was first announced...

Given the choice between a retirement village of a few hundred people and a drag strip I would opt for the village. Personally, I could live with both.

A military base is like a small city to begin with. Other than some of the base housing, what else has been utilized out there? It looks pretty deserted and forlorn...

Lift off, brilliant minds think alike. It is a small city, a city within those fences. As much as humanly possible should be done to take advantage of what is out there. IMO the retirement village should be just one small part of it, not the deciding factor for ALL the citizens of Blytheville whenever something like the Racetrack comes up.

I would think MOST people would prefer a "quiet neighborhood" no matter where it is.
I believe there was a website about the proposal at one time but don't find it now. Weren't any noise concerns debunked? And wasn't there more to it than just drag racing, possibly a go-kart course and putt-putt golf? Now THAT is something about anyone could enjoy!

The BGRAA has done a wonderful job of stiefeling any progress that may of been made with the base.

Just how could a drag strip be worse than the plans taking off and landing? Do the old folks out there have selective hearing? You cant tell me people having a good time, racing cars LEGALLY could make much more racket than one of them jets taking off.. This town SERIOUSLY needs a place like a drag course. there is nothing to do in this town. NOTHING. i've looked. twice!. It would bring alot of commerce into the town as well.

What if the drag strip made a deal with the old folks? "hey if you'll just turn down your hearing aids on these couple nights a week, we'll let you ramble on about the "good ole days" on other nights of the weeks...haha

Would people support a asphalt/concrete kart racing track for kids and adults?Could it make enough money to pay for itself?
