I'm glad to be a "has been", thats better than a "NEVER WAS"!!!. I played Football and ran Track in the early 70"s at BHS. Yes, I played Fb. with Bruce. He was an excelent player. Some of us were given the chance to continue our education on the next level as student/athletes. Many finished their elegibility on the playing field/court/or track. Some of us could not compete all 4 years, because of injuries.

Does anyone remember Jack McNulty. The 1st and only person to break 2:00 in the 880 or 800 in Jr. High. He ran like a machine. He went to the Air Force Academy. He ran Track there and went on to be the comander of the Nuke Silos in Wy.

the best athlete to ever come through that little town was GENE NEWBERRY even though he did't have alot of playing time at Bama he had a GOLDEN ARM and if he was given the oppurtunity he could have gone Pro. for sure. He was an undiscovered pure class Athlete. He just needed a little discoverment.

Wow, all this brought back so many memories, I lived around the corner from Gary Holmes...Bruce Hay and I graduated together, played many baseball and church league basketball games together, in fact, the first time he ever played golf, was with me, using my clubs on Fairview Fairways...he might not even remember that, but he could sure play even for the first time out!

Speak lightly on what your saying, because there is ONE who I know of that has made something of his life. He is a hardworker who gives everything he has for his family's well being. He was a great football star and isnt a lazy slob. He went to ASU in 79 see if yall can figure out who he is.
The person trying to slam others must have nothing to say regarding himself. At least these guys did live the dream of playing ball and obviously was just one of the highlights in there adolesence. I also know first hand, regardless of what these men are doing today suits you or not, they are all still great friends and still have the bond and the respecet derived from playing the sport they were good at. Make me wonder with the attitude you have what did you ever do????

I certainly think Russ Mosely merits mention as does Bruce Hay who was the Arkansas football player of the year his senior year. Don't forget Richard Brewer who played pro football and graduated around 1971.

As for basketball, Walt Hampton played on a great team in the late 60's and went on to play for Mississippi State. My vote goes to Ricky Meador. No player got more results out of his talent than Ricky D.

chester hawkins came outta gosnell thats my dad, he's the best baseball player thats ever came through gosnell, thats what coach jackson and toombs always told me...he was really good at football and basketball too but he just stuck with baseball. he definately would have started all three sports if he would have played all 3 of them and probably been the best at all three of them

that's sweet kid...Chester was good but not the best, he is a great guy and it looks like he is a super great dad, but he isn't the best baseball player to come out of Gosnell

I was there when he was, and I've been around since then, Tony Lucious (sp) was great, Shawn Lee was great, Spencer Neal was great - the best is a matter of your point of view until you are scouted by college or a pro team - my vote is on Shawn Lee.

Biggest waste of potential - Derrek McClung

Chester Hawkins was the best to come out of Gosnell. He led his team to a state title. Tony L. had the best college career of all of them. However, Hawkins was the most talented. He just couldn't get it all together in college. Lee was good but got a lot out of the game by hustling very hard. Gosnell had a few players in the 70.'s that wee pretty salty. All of the above mentioned got college scholarships. All of them could have played minor league ball. I hear he is doing well coaching at NLR high.

One of the best basketball players came from the 76/77 class Rocky Dog Walker. He had offers from a few big Ten Teams but he didn't have the grades to continue. In football it was Richard Brewer and Bruce Hay to great people. In baseball it was Randy Smith and Tommy Kincade(SP). All of these people were great on and off the field.
