Saw where local dentist Bill Armstrong is going to open one of the first liquor stores in Eliz on Hwy 19E in the little strip center that contains State Farm. That center has enough traffic issues already, which will be magnified by the liquor traffic.
Wonder what his parents think about their son selling the evil liquor? Is he phasing out his dental practice to peddle spirits in the bible belt?

He is in the running to get one of the 3 permits the city will issue. If you don't like this type of establishment then do not go into it! You are not going to discourage people from drinking. You will allow there tax dollars to be spent here in Elizabethton rather than JC.

Jack, you might want to use spell check.... its "Daniels".

Interesting that there are four liquor store applicants that are running notices in the paper.
How will the city decide who is in, and who is out?

This huge percentage of people voted Elizabethton not to be a dry city anymore.
Who cares if a dentist is opening a liquor store, that just makes him a smart, fiscally able, and common man. The "evil liquor", as one said, isn't going to add anymore trouble than this town already has.
I loved to have a drink in my twenties, now I can't remember the last time I made a trip to JC for a bottle of bubbly.
I go by this concept; Not everybody that medication is a "drug addict", Not everybody that drinks is a "alcoholic". I could keep going down the line.
To each their own, and the people of Elizabethton has spoken.

There are four:
Armstrong
Chappell
Bridges/Nidiffer
Another person (who's name I forgot) who's notice ran last week who is going to put one on Railroad Street across from Krystal in that little strip center owned by Carter Finance

Since: Sep 12

Location hidden

This is long overdue. Carter County has lost tons of money throughout the years over this. Not sure how people are so against this.

I don't believe they would give a license to Carl Ray Nidiffer. Dr. Armstrong should be a "shoo in".

Carl Ray Nidiffer? I hope that his potential future Elizabethton liquor store does not repeatedly burn down...

I am a born again chrstian that sees nothing wrong with being a responsible drinker. While I do not drink alcohol myself, diabetic, I know that the first miracle Jesus performed was to turn water into wine. Some woulkd say that the wine was non-alcoholic but in the the Bible, the wine steward proclaimed to the host that most hosts waited until everyone was drunk and then brought out the cheap stuff, but he (the host) saved the best for last. Also Paul recommended spirits to Timothy for his ailments. Opening a liquor store will not create alcoholism, but it might keep some people from driving to Johnson City and driving back drunk if they could just walk to a local store. Any substance can be abused, including bath salts, and I feel that worship (abuse) of alcohol is a sin, but having a drink now and then is not sinful.

I also don't drink, I do use sherry for cooking and brandy for baking. It was always an inconvenience to have to drive to Johnson City, plus Johnson City got the money.

I'm reminded of the story by my husband of listening to a fiery sermon by his Baptist preacher against the sin of alcohol. The next day, coming home from work and stopped at the red light at the liquor store, he saw the same preacher coming out the back door of the store with a large bag. He never went back to the church.

What is the difference between a Baptist & Methodist? The Methodist will say hello to you at the liquor store & not attempt to run & hide.

-Bridges/Nidiffer location is to be at 630 Broad St
(Doe River Wine and Spirits)
-Roy B Hyder location to be at 825 N Lynn Ave
(Sunshine Liquor and Wine, Inc
I am sure that there will be more people applying. It will be interesting to see how many more people apply and who is chosen.

The city council will decide whom by financial status, building location, etc. etc.

When they narrow that down to 4 or 6 individuals they will then do a lottery drawing, no one is guaranteed a license.

It's about time, it's overdue, we're almost in the 21st century here in Elizabethton...and no it won't infringe on anyones Meth Market.....
