Looks like the city board is getting serious about this.

I myself more than welcome the board getting serious about this- and it is about time they do.It is more than about time that they ACT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE RESIDENTS in Bluefield. Not any special interest group not their "buddies"-fellow golfers-club members-church members- but the general public that resides here.

To the people that are SHAFTED BY FOOD CITY it is about a convenient grocery in the community that people need...To some that need that store there the other things do not matter-the pretty flowers-the nice Christmas decorations-the plans for the intermodal center or downtown streetscape. the fountains ... the holiday of lights..a decent grocery on or near the MAIN bus line is vital for many that live here and a concern for a lot.
While these other projects may be pretty and pleasing a town this size without a decent grocery is a slap in the face to the residents that depend on that!
I sure hope that board wakes up from their snooze and actually does something--if that evil&crooked food city will not let a grocer in that site the city needs to do all in their power to FIND SPACE for a grocer and I would be all for passing some kind of "tax or fees" for the vacant non used buildings and the lessee as well as the owner! That might build some fire under several A**es maybe in several locations.
This is about time they do at least something!

Bluefield will never be able to get anything if it does not have a grocery store.

I guess people can go to Applebees or Ryans...yum!

A DECENT grocery store is a must it is like the basis that can be built on.

Bluefield should quit trying to get somebody in that old building anyway... They need nice new fresh business. The entire city has turned into the ghetto.

Dude! Stop talking in third person. It's like that episode of Seinfeld, only it's not funny.

My bad, I did not know you propped me. In fact, I did not think anyone had EVER propped me. I am still new at this and dont know where all to look for these things. I am figuring it out--slowly. I have a prop for today, if you need it. if you dont today, I'll give you my prop tomorrow.

Bluefield does not have a full-service, full size grocier store. The one on Bluefield Ave. is amlost a convenience store.

Check your facts.

I am shopping at the GRANTS on the avenue and I like it the only negatives are it NEEDS TO BE A LARGER STORE and one nearer the population center of Bluefield. This Grants is nice-the employees are friendly and helpful the main thing is due to being smaller they cannot carry a lot that Green Valley or the Princeton Grants can carry. For it's size it does stock a lot BUT a larger full line Grants is what is needed.
The parking is not so great more so in winter....last week I parked at adjoining lot -one at store was filled-it was absolutely NO PROBLEM and no problem pushing the grocery cart over there BUT I was thinking in WINTER( which we will have sooner or later) that hilly lot IS a problem.
I know there are people that DO NOT feel safe in that part of town at all BUT if you go in daylight hours there is NO PROBLEM. The store closes earlier than most Grants because of where it is located...8 I think BUT that should give most people to get what they need.
They do not have all the frozen foods selection nor the larger meats selection of larger Grants BUT for the size it is nice and a lot cheaper than foodcity.

Look you idi/ts, the princeton lawyer at Smith and Lilly, who owns this whole building, refused to lease to Grants and instead lease to Food City which said from the outset that it intended to us the building as a warehouse. Put the blame where it belongs with a greedy Lawyer, and the city board who was aware what food city intended to do with the building.

This is what I've been saying all along. The people in Bluefield are totally ignorant of the situation. The blame should be placed on the CITY of BLUEFIELD.... not Food City.... totally misguided

Absolutely very overpriced and some things poor quality so they just are not competitive and so they have to play their games to try to eliminate any competition.Kroger here was not the "greatest" BUT food city never could hold a candle to them-I shopped at food city when Kroger was striking and was REAL GLAD to get back to Kroger. They are extremely overpriced now and WHY?? Kroger employees have a union and with that benefits and higher wages and food city charges more -something is wrong.
The only way that food city can compete is to keep out the competition-their prices are way too high to do it otherwise.

The sad part in all of this is the people hurt by not having some kind of nice store on Cumberland, some that can least afford to be hurt-some that have difficulty getting to a store.

Aw Bullshit...lets get real. the store was crap. Looked like crap and then the rent went up and when the lease expired, Kroger left the thing. Nobody supported the thing, blacks hanging out in the parking lot and around the doors of the store, scary as hell to go in there because of the types hanging out. No one done anything about it. NOW, everybody feels they were done wrong when Kroger left. Gathered a bunch of names on a paper and called it a petition and it done nothing! Then instead of leasing it to Grants, the owners leased it to KVAT and now everyone is pissed at KVAT for leasing it?? What is wrong with you people. Who is going to Cumberland Road to shop anyway? Nothing is there! The union so admired for getting high wages, is killing the smaller stores-like Kroger. Don't believe me, wait a little while and the Kroger in Bluewell will close next. Then all the union people can say they were better off to close the joint rather than take a wage cut. Bluewell is only slightly BETTER than Cumberland road. It is over for a grocery store on Cumberland. Grants can't make it there either. It would just become the "crow pole" of the south of town with undesirables hanging at the doors, panhandling and intimidating for money like old times. I for one say tear the whole complex down, put in a nice trailer park and get the property tax off it. It would be a little better than vacant buildings causing the urban blight we know a Bluefield, WV.
