Why are there so many empty stores, why have most the high ends stores of ten years ago gone?

I want to know what your friends are seeing because this mall has been slowly dieing for a couple years now. I work at roses and Belk. Roses is down 40% from last year. Belk is just as bad if not worse

The only places worth going to now is JCPenney, F.Y.E. and Chick-fil-A. You can tell Mercer Mall is on its last leg with a lot of the stores packing up and leaving like Real Deal, Tolley's, and Border's. There is no doubt in my mind that if JCPenney and/or Sears were to move out, then the entire mall would probably just close its doors for good.

I saw a billboard ad for the mall the other day that said it had 70 stores!! That's a laugh! Get real people.

Not to mention US Cellular, BB's treasures, and the Radio Shack kiosk that was in the food court. I also heard Sunny Days is moving to Blacksburg

I doubt the mall will be open much longer. I will be surprised if it is still open this time next year.

The mall may be loosing a lot to online shopping...so many shop online for competitive prices and if you do not have to have it today usually shipping (if they do not use post office) is a few days away.
The HIGH end stores are not going to really make it well here....the majority of people are not making the dr. and lawyers salaries so they cannot have the income to support high end stores.A WHOLE LOT of folks are shopping at maybe Penney's but a lot are going to K Mart and Walmart and other "discount" or outlet stores.
This entire area does NOT have high paying industrial jobs while there are exceptions overall wages cannot support much in high end stores.

Does anyone remember Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke, Va? It used to be packed and was the place many people traveled to in order to shop from this area. Its all but closed now with only a few stores left. Malls can close and often do. It would be devastating for this area if that should happen.

The mall is 32 years old, that's ancient for a mall. Time to bulldoze this mess and make a new one.

Mercer County is fastly becoming McDowel County. The mall is another prime example of a failing economy. You people elected the same ole Do-Nothings back in office and it only gets worse.

Tanglewood claims to be making a comeback... Truth is that it should just admit defeat like crossroads did. Roanoke really only has Valley View and it isn't so great.

Sunni Days needs to pack his shit and get the f*ck out of Bluefield. He pays his workers under the table to avoid doing the truly responsible thing and pay his fair share of taxes. Such unscrupulous business practices are unfair to the legitimate businesses at the mall. F*ck him and the stinking camel he rode in on!

I moved here from Cali and work at Belk in cosmetics. The volume that we do is outrageous for this town to be as small as it is! We pull in more then some places back home! We may have slow days but for the most part we are busy! Bluefield is a small town but there is alot of old money here! The old people keep that place running!

You're pretty stupid, aren't ya? Mcdowell has been a failed county since the mines pulled out in the late seventies. Mercer does not rely on coal to drive it's economy. The Mercer Mall is 32 years old which makes it ANCIENT for a mall and since this past Black Friday was the BEST EVER, I would say that the economy is recovering quite nicely but of course Obama is still black so he should get no credit for the recovery. Why don't you go blog about all the fun things you've found while picking your ass in Church and leave talk about the economy to people that know something more than "food goes in this hole" and "used food that doesn't tastes as good comes out of this one".

yes the economy has taken a big hit and Bluefield has lost out on alot. If the powers that be want Bluefield to make a come back; get busy city council and work to get big business back in town and not on the outskirts. Stop blaming the mall; Krogers and coal for your woes. Utilize the plans that you spend thousands of dollars letting a NC firm come in give you a workable plan to revitalize the town. Market Bluefield State more and for goodness sakes get dorms back. Student have money to spend but they don't have decent places to spend or go except to the Mall. Build it and they will come. Stop trying to market John Nash when the town is dying from lack of inner business
