I googled and found this news item:

Haunted Stories from North Georgia/Fannin County

Looking for a good ghost story? The North Georgia Mountains can give you just that. There are a lot of haunting stories to tell all over the North Georiga Mountains, but I'm going to focus on Fannin County. Fannin County is a little county right on the TN line. It still has a running train that runs you from Blue Ridge, GA to McCaysville, GA/Copperhill, TN, so you can imagine how old this county is.

I'll first start off with probably the most popular ghost story. The story of Tilley Bend and the witch. The church is a very old church (my dad, in fact, was assisant pastor to it and my husband and father in law remodeled it) that has been around since the 1800s and was one of the first churches in Fannin County. It's located off of Old Dial road, you can also get there off of Aska Rd. Tilley Bend was actually an old settlement and as pass Tilley Bend church and get closer to the lake you can see the old ruins. Most of the ruins are buried now from the lake and so forth. Anyway, supposedly, there was a witch in the community and the church goers decided that she needed to be hung for fear of the community and the children. The children had been getting sick and the community was saying it was because she was a witch and was casting spells on the families. There is a large tree in front of the church and that was the one she was hung on. She is buried at the top left of the graveyard and her grave is turned backwards (custom with burying witches). Rumor is that if you walk around the church saying her name, Polly Long, that she will come after you. I've heard personal stories saying that they heard her scream and saw a bright light. Be careful coming to this place at night, though, the church has been vandalized a few times so being there at odd hours may seem supicious.

I do not believe in such but I do know stories of this church. You could pick day or night to make this traveling witch hunt. If you go during the day, legend says you will see the witch, boy or paranormal shadows. If you go to Tilly during the night fall you will see anything!
People look for Pollie Long but she is not the witch. Elizabeth Bradley's great grandson has documented on shadowlands that the witch infact is Elizabeth Bradley. She is buried under the tree in the graveyard. Look for her and her sisters graves.
Legend has it that Keith Stanley, a child who is deceased wants to tell his story to people. He appears, the witches appear and you can feel tugging at your legs as you walk into the graveyard.
The legends of this graveyard also say if you see paranormal lights or casting, you are in the presence of what you came for.
I don't believe in this foolishness. I have been to the place and felt nothing. Maybe you must believe or maybe not.

Do not take anything from the graveyard if you believe and trust the legends. You will take spirits with you.

The old blue ridge highway leading to blairsville is another haunted legend. Start your drive at 3:15 a.m. and follow the road to the Union County Line.
There are several empty old homes along your way as you make the curves and staight of ways. The deaths from car accidents on this road is unknown to most but the number is larger than most elsewhere in the county. It is said by legends that you can see paranormal shadows of a pregnant woman suspended in mid/air crying with her arms opened out in certain curves. Some say if you stop, she will lower herself, float to your window and begin laughing before she zips away not to be seen again.
Legends also say that an elderly man dressed from the 1920 to 1930's era replaces the pregnant woman and then you will hear that a young child from the same era replaces the man.
I have never seen this myself but I am a non believer of the paranormal.

Whitepath off of highway 515 holds it's own legends. Legends of dead Indian witches who claim the area. There have been several wrecks on the crossing of 515 due to deer leaping into the road. Legends are that some see an Indian on the side of the road lift up his arms and blow into his hands. After the indian blows quickly and raises his hands, people peer to him and then a deer jumps out in front of their cars. Truth or not, I have not seen it nor do I believe in such.

Claims have been made that if you walk across the dam at night, you will hear people whispering. The faster you walk, the faster they whisper. When you reach the end it haults completely untill you step foot back onto the dams roadway to walk back. Again, I don't believe in this.
I find all of the stories and legends interesting and have tried some to prove them wrong or right.
I have not encountered anything paranormal to call these ghost stories real.

Well thanks for sharing, I don't really believe in this stuff either but the stories make for great storytelling around a campfire! Anybody else that has any "legends" or "sightings" from our area, please do share as this is very interesting.

Although I am not a believer in this stuff either, it is good for the local economy when people talk it up. Just look what a booming business ghost tales have created for Savannah GA. There are many people who do believe and will travel wherever just to seek out a legend or ghost story. With a dying economy, why not play it up, our town could use the tourist's money!

A time of religious persecution not to say that Indians dont have their ways because my Grandmother was one and she sure did but they were not witchcraft but rather as normal to them as The Baptist faith or any other faith is to their followers, if there is a spirit, it is because it was mistreated and wrongly accused out of fear.

I am the youngest daughter of rev Robert ray long , when I was just a little girl 4 / 5 years old my dad was the pastor at this old church . He to spent many days and nights remodeling this old church.
I must say in all my time spent there I never encountered any strange or spooky things nor did my dad ever worry about us straying off and playing by ourselves, I do remember a story of a witch being buried in the top left corner of the grave yard. But none of us kids believed the story we all just thought it was the adults way of keeping us out of harms way , as the old grave was sunken in . I wouldn't be afraid to spend the night or run around the church chanting a name .
I can't count the number of times I went to the out house alone either and you know in every scary story you just never get caught in the bathroom alone!!! I did suffer an injury that I can recall just like it was yesterday , this would turn out to be the only painful or uncomfortable experience I ever had there , one day as my dad worked on the old church I found the growing pile of sawdust to be the most amusing thing I could do with my time. My dad told me several times however playing in it was not something I should do, bored I finally took in a great heap of air and blew into the saw dust with all my might , the sawdust flew into my eyes and needless to say dads work on the old church was finished for the day . My memory's of this old church are far from scary rather fond childhood memory's of a little girls loveing days with her favorite person in the whole wide world !!! My daddy Rev Robert Ray Long!!!! Now gone on to be with The Lord!! Thanks daddy for all the memories!!!!
