Good Job, can your son tell you any rules of any of the sports that he has participated in? Unless he had a coach that teaches fundamentals and knows the sport that he was coached, then I would bet not! Howbis that doing a great job for our kids? There's more to running rec dept & facility than handing a coach some balls & giving them 1/2 of a court to practice on!

OMG, I have seen what it takes, but if that's your job and that's what you get paid to do, then I'm just saying do your job! Why build another facility when there is plenty of room for adult and kid programs in the one that we have, that was built by tax payers? We don't need another facility, we need the Rec director to do the job that he is paid to do!

I have seen his budget and I have seen the the money that goes through that dept! Have you ever wondered what the money that is taken up @ the gate is used for, how about the registration fees that are charged? Why not charge adults in a league, who don't need supervision and use that registration money to help pay for the youth programs?

Go to the commissioner's office and do some research for yourself. The new budget was just passed this week so go in and ask for a break down of the rec dept budget, you might be surprised yourself!

What are you talking about? Is it really the Rec. Dept. Directors responsibility to teach kids the rules of the various sports they organize? That's what a coach, parents and good old fashion television and reading are for. My son is very fortunate in that I teach him rules for most all sports. If I didn't know the rules, I search them out and explain them. I would not expect the Rec. Dept. Director to to teach my son the rules of a sport. Just as I would not expect the Director of St. Josephs Hospital (Played by the Rec. Dept. Director) to educate me (played by the child athlete) on my heart. It would be up to me (again, played by the child athlete) to learn about heart health on my own or with the help of my Cardiologist (again, played by the coach. A certain amount of "taking responsibility for yourself and your family" has to come into play at some point.

i think it's a testament to our county that we have a $2.5M rec center BUT NO LIBRARY. this priority was a boondoggle.

i guess recreation is more important than education and reading.

this town needs to examine their heads.

It's a "trickle down" effect. The Rec director should provide the means for the coaches to teach the kids! To learn the rules of a sport from TV is a joke.....that's where most of the terrible habits that I see come from! I expect a coach to know the sport and to teach my child the rules & use age appropriate fundamentals to teach the basics of any given sport!

The director of St Joseph would be over your cardiologist to see that he does his job, just like the Rec director should see that his coaches are doing their jobs!

i wonder why the rec dept director gets to live at the lake house that the county owns? i bet all the county employees wish they had a lake house the taxpayers pay for. maybe the county should sell it, and build a library with that money!

Actually those homes and the property surrounding them are still owned by TVA & the county has a 100 year lease for nearly nothing per year, so they can't sell them. They could, however open a marina or sub lease the property to someone and make money on it. Instead our rec director gets to live out there and pays NOTHING, not even his utilities!

If the programs were run differently & coaches were given the "tools" needed to coach, then you would see a difference. I do coach & have 8 players on my team, I was given 2 balls, one of which has obviously been used outside & has no seams or "grip", so I went to our local sporting goods store(North GA Sports Zone) & bought 8 balls so that each kid can do dribbling drills @ the same time so I don't spend my whole hour on them.

Wake up tax paying citizens and start asking questions! The corruption has been going on way too long!

I was thinking of moving to Blue Ridge, GA. For many years I have ref'd soccer. All of this name calling and bickering is turning me off. Is there a good soccer program for youth through the rec center?

First of all, videohio, that's fine...we don't need any more transplants here.

Second of all, Concerned Citizen, sounds like you want an "at-a-boy" for going and buying new balls. Congrats. You did good. Is that what you wanted to hear? And why would the county have a marina when there is already a marina about half a mile away from the dam? Sounds awesome...take the money out of other people's pockets so the county can have some and so they can make a family move. Someone sounds jealous.

It's not like it's easy to get coaches for these leagues. Not a lot of people want to volunteer their time so they can coach your snot-nosed kid who doesn't want to listen to anyone because you don't discipline them and they have no respect for authority. They do background checks on the coaches to make sure they don't have a questionable past, and expect the coaches to know how to play the game. Why put it all on the coach to teach them how to play? Maybe their parents should teach em a little, too. I know when I was in the rec program, my dad spent time with me teaching me how to play baseball and basketball, and I will do the same with my kids. I understand the coach is there to coach the kid...but you can only do so much with kids who are barely paying attention anyway and many who are just there because their parents wanted them out of the house for an hour or so. I tell ya what...there's a thing called the internet, it's this new invention. It's crazy. If you go to google, you can search for the rules of sports. So I think the coaches have plenty of access to the rulebooks if they have questions. Whatch this...http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ru les+of+basketball

Ta Da! Basketball rules. Remarkable, I know. Now, stop playing on the internet and go play with your new balls.

I agree the director is not doing his job. Have you ever taken note of the number of coaches that have their own children on their teams and their children start and play 90% of the game. Some children who make every practice and play just a hard get to play 5 minutes of the game. Allowing this to continue is teaching the children what??? No coach should be allowed to coach their own child or the child of the coach of his/her child. Take a look at how Mike Panter coached his team. He did not have a child on the team and he played each child an equal amount of time.

I know exactly who you are referring to. If she was the winning coach why did she not tell the runner-up coach to go-fly-a-kite. His girls should not have been the starters. Has she ever hear of "You dance with them that brung you." If she had done the right thing she would not have had to make a b-line for the bath room as soon as the game was over. I am glad at least one parent cornered her. More parents should do the same!

In the past few I have had a chance to visit the new rec center. it is a great builing an something this county can get a lot of use out of. The only thing I do not understand is the lady that sits up front what exactly is her job. Every time I have went in she is on the computer either on yahoo or msn or weather I can only hope she is a volunteer not a county empoyee we are paying to play on a computer all day.

Yes she is a paid co employee, along w/the guy that lives in the house down by the pond....what does he do? Ms. Patterson is a relative of our sheriff.......she had been working for the Arts Association, a non-profit, and when they had to let staff go, Ms. Patterson was left w/o a job. So without advertising the opening @ the rec center or putting one of the other 2 rec dept employees out there, our Co commisioners hired her for that position making the same amount she made @ the art's association....I'm starting to see a trend here!!!!!! Maybe we should all just go suck up to the commissioner and the sheriff and we could get hired for these jobs that they are filling with the "budddy" system!

Wake up people!!!!!
