Seems TDS is having internet issues in our area. But I'm unsure of how bad it is so I ask anyone who has DSL with TDS Telecom to do me a small favor.

http://speedtest.tds.net/

Go here and simply run a speed test. Most of my family and friends who have TDS only have the 5MB package, while a few, including myself, have 15MB.

5MB seems to be barely affected, but a quick call to TDS and they could easily bump it up to 6.15MBs for you, for free.

15MB's seems to have been strongly effected. My speed, while I do live in Epworth, was usually at 12MB's. But over a month's time, went from 8MB's, to eventually 5MB's.

But anyway, for those that feel their speed is a bit low for what they're paying for, call TDS and report the trouble.

They'll credit your account for as long as they have the trouble.

Also, reporting the trouble gives TDS a good idea of what areas are affected, and which aren't as much.

I'm sure there are a ton of people out there with the same issue as myself, but aren't very tech savvy when it comes to figuring out the problem.

When/if you call TDS, say you heard a rumor about it being a capacity issue. The number is 1-800-358-3648. The rest, from there, should be easy enough to figure out. They're there 24/7, so call whenever.

To further add, the last TDS tech that came over to my area brought me some yellow cards that are fitted along the powerlines. They were old and brittle and he snapped the tough plastic like a twig. It was that worn down and quite old. He also showed me one that had been recently hit by lightning, ironically around the time that nasty thunderstorm hit about three weeks ago.

So it's very possible that the lightning storm did more damage that just to our homes, but to our internet as well.

You could check your bill, or call them and ask directly.

ETC runs on a separate grid and is more dug in compared to TDS. I have the package "dead" with TDS so I get internet, phone, and DishTV on one bill. Thankfully TDS has been rather forgiving so I'm only paying roughly half what I normally do until next March.

This topic is an advertisement, big news would be something like "TDS: Now featuring trained technical staff".

ETC is the bee's knees.

I wouldn't really consider it an advertisement if it's someone asking for help to report a problem that obviously hits a lot of people, wary or not.

I actually checked for myself. My 15 megabyte internets with TDS are down to 7 megs. I normally get 11 megs so this does seem like a problem.

If you work for TDS this is an advertisement. Of course I guess this worked out for the Teamsters...

Rest assured, I don't. I'm just a customer paying for something I'm obviously not getting.

If you get ETC service you should consider it, cable internet is much more solid. And TDS tech staff is a little odd, they assume the customer is clueless and will relate better to clueless tech support.

Lanius, I believe curious might be onto something. He said he lives in Epworth, as do I. I actually put in a word about this problem as I too, am having internet issues related to this very thing. I've had the tech guys literally replace all the phone wiring from the DSL modem, to underside the house, and to the box outside. And still getting an issue.

Called ETC and they said they won't touch Epworth at all. Guess TDS customers are SOL until this capacity issue (?) blows over.

DSL is a pain but with the right power setup I think you can get it to work in an outage. I could be giving outdated information.

I live in Mineral Bluff and have TDS 15Mbps service. I just ran the test and got 14.38Mbps download and 0.64Mbps upload. This is in line with what I've been getting since I upgraded to the service. I did have one dsl modem bite the dust, but they replaced it immediately. I don't like the price but am reasonably happy with the service.

I've never tried this, but if you have a reasonably large battery backup it should be able to run a simple DSL modem for a long time. Since there is still perfect signal in an outage I don't know what would stop it from connecting.

I could be horribly mistaken.

You are somewhat closer to Blue Ridge than I am, you're also most likely on a separate grid than I am.

Don't know why, but TDS called me about 10 minutes ago, waking me up and said they had an update on the issue.

Something about government funding and adding new equipment. Said they're most likely going to be done by July, and gave the possibility of it being done sooner.

Just an update for those having the same problem as me.

The problem I have with TDS DSL in Wayne County Tennessee is that if it rains, it goes out and has to be reset. If we have heavy rain and/or lightning, it stays out until the storm moves completely out of the area. Some folks who have moved here in the last 2 or 3 years from other parts of the country, say they only want to patch problems, not repair them. Might be correct in their thinking. The only time I have been told of any help on my bill from TDS is that if my service is out for 24 consecutive hours, they will reimburse me for that 24 hours, doesn't matter if you spend all of 2 or 3 days of rainy weather constantly resetting the modem, a lot of the times to no avail, just won't reset.

we had used tds since 1970. when internet became available, i signed up for it. it was not working more than it worked. it had been out since august of 2010, & i could never get it fixed (of course i had to pay for it all this time about $720). we finally cancelled all service with them. no refund. etc is not available where i live, every time i check i'm told: we come with 100 feet of your property & a lot more people in your area have asked for it, but...
