My husband and I recently had a vacation in Blue ridge. After about 3 days, I feel in love with the place, I originate from a small town, so could relate to the area. Loved everybody we meet there, and the kids we meet, have the best manners of any kids Ive meet anywhere in the world...
We were back a week and bought a home in the Blue ridge area, we plan to move up soon and really looking forward to it..
But surprised at some of the comments Im seen on here, as we are from Florida and seems like we wont be very popular just for that reason :/
Im hoping this is not a true representation of how everybody who Lives in Blue ridge feels?
Anyway, looking forward to the move and making friends there. Can anybody tell me some cool things to do there? Some nice hiking trails? fishing spots, markets and so on?
looking forward to reading you're responses :)

You're welcome here. What most natives don't understand is they'd be poor without out of towners. If you come into my shop, I will greet you with open arms! I am a local and have been all my life.

Yeah, us poor ole ignorant hillbillies didn't have a pot to piss in 'til all these queers and Floridiots moved in here and showed us the way of life. Welcome, come one, come all! Maybe you'll have the cure for aids and how to control a smartass, high society want a be!

Don't pay attention to what you see on here. We mostly talk trash ... and, yes, we have several perennial unusually obnoxious spammers on here (LeFart and LeFart Fan) who are likely to say anything -- just ignore them,

More seriously, what some local people don't appreciate is SOME Florida people (and some others) who assume they they are smarter than everyone else and particularly those who presume to give advice on a particular court case involving a local child named Jake Lee. This child, from a good church-going family, faces charges in connection with in a tragic automobile accident in which a Florida girl died. His case has not been tried -- except on Topix.

Don't be put off though. We can be contrary when we get riled up, when someone messes with one of our own, or when we get too much corn liquor in us, but for the most part we're peaceable bunch and good neighbors.

If you will bear with us, we'll bear with you! Fair enough?

There's nothing special about this place or the people here as much as they would like there to be. We have fat firemen, trigger-happy cops, and a lousy chili competition.

We do have some special farm animals but that's another discussion for a different thread.

We have an abundance of places to ride bikes or horses, hike, swim, and go fishing or hunting. There are hundreds of miles of trails and old logging roads. You can get maps from the forest service office.

Except for the extremely rare Meredith Emerson type event, or during deer season, you will be safer in the woods than on the roads and highways. At all hours of the day and night, the roads are full of drunks, huffers, and meth heads who never use their turn signals and are always talking on their cellphones.

Get deer whistles for your car, rabies vaccines for your animals, s and expect to stay home for several days whenever it snows.

Also all of the movies are PG rated. Welcome to Blue Ridge.

Thanks everybody for the welcomes and advice on things....I really do love the town, and the community, Like I said before, everybody I came into contact with there were so nice....
Looking forward to living a quiter life style, though I am slightly worried about work, how ever Im not "above" doing what ever it takes!

When we were there we did a few hikes, I was scared the whole time of running into a momma bear when I turned the corner lol, but IM sure I will get use to that...

FYI, for those who really don't like people from Florida. The time Ive lived here, Ive only meet 2 born and breed Floridians, most are imports, so I, Myself, could not judge a whole state for that reason. Yet I will agree, Florida drivers suck! Never experienced them driving and stopping to read directions, more how hast and aggressive they drive scares me :)

This place has a way of making an otherwise reasonable progressive type become horribly jaded and discontented, I've seen it numerous times. The best thing to do is avoid most garden-variety locals as they are the source of the drudgery here, don't worry they're easy to spot.

East of Colorado there's no better white water rafting or marijuana in the country, you can bet your bottom dollar on that advice.

Go back to where you came from and don't let the door hit behind you. If you like, crime, Negroes, traffic and heat, that is where you belong. Get moving.

I believe you will find our small town of Blue Ridge a beautiful place to live. I too found myself on this site before moving here and was very disapointed at all of the negitive feedback. But please keep this in mind. The people that reply with such a sardonic attitude are just a small handfull of individuals in which you will find in any community. Please let me assure you that we are proud of our community. It is a very friendly area, and I have found it very easy to build many new relationships here.
I Love it here and I am sure you will as well. So Welcome and don't pay any attention to the naysayers. Here is a link to help you around Blue Ridge.

For what it's worth at this late date, Union County [Blairsville] is much better governed, our sole county commissioner, Lamar Paris, is a treasure. It is also more welcoming than Blue Ridge. These are moot points since you already bought a house in Blue Ridge.

Are you calling me Sardonic? That has a satanic connotation and I am anything but. I am sweet and kind and gave our prospective new resident very practical advice. She should worry about the drunks, huffers, and methheads on the highway not the bears in the woods. I know we have an alarming numbers of wrecks. Deers are very dangerous, too because they jump in front of your car especially at night and deer whistles do help. Rabies in nearly rampant now. I have read many stories in the paper about dogs getting into fights with rabid raccoons. Have you ever wondered how many dog get into fights with rabid raccoons, fights that no one ever knows about and those dogs go lick children? Do you have any idea how lethal the rabies virus is? Only two people have ever survived it. People and animals die of rabies all the time without ever being properly diagnosed. Getting animals vaccinated was very practical advice. On the bright side, I have been here for `16 years and have never gotten jaded about how beautiful it always it. And I agree that are some amazingly wonderful people here, too.

Im sure we will love living there. Once I get use to bears in my backyard :) I saw my first bear ever behind The movie theater, in town. We were getting back into the car after being to McDonald's.. I thought it was super cool..

So there is a big Meth problem in town?

LaForte Fan, so glad I don't have kids or dogs after reading your post lol..

Yes its probable the prettiest place, Ive seen in a long time.. I love the forest and the wild life, Keen to know what vegetables grow there well also. I want a garden. A friend bought a peach tree and in a day the deer ate all the little peaches off it. Guess you have to expect that living in the forest..
