Government sponsored ice rinks - Really!!! Blue Ridge should stick to, maybe, leasing out property to those who want to start, or run, a business not be partners with them - BR should not have to invest venture capital for someone else.

They should lease the property to the business that feels so confident in their operation that they would be willing to enter into a lease agreement that would be beneficial for both parties (bid it out?).

Time will tell but I think you are incorrect. It will do well, of course, during the Thanksgiving weekend. But I don't think it is enough of a draw to get people to come to Blue Ridge during the rest of the winter which is usually an extremely slow time. The unknown factor is will the locals support it.

I don't know if you frequent downtown or if you keep up with visitor info...but there really isn't an "extremely slow time" anymore!! The chamber's #s & tax revenues are up, which means that the lodging(cabin rentals) vacancies are down! People/visitors are coming here, but are they spending money while they're here or are they taking advantage of our county's natural resources that we "locals" tend to take for granted?? I personally see the locals supporting the rink more than tourists. By "locals" I am talking about anyone who owns a residence here, whether part-time or full-time. There are lots of 2nd homeowners that will bring family in for holidays & school breaks that will pay to skate. I don't however, believe that anyone will plan their entire choice to visit BR on the rink. Visitors from FL will LOVE it b/c ice skating isn't something they get to do everyday, but the majority of our "tourists" aren't from FL anymore. Ppl are coming from ATL & ice skating rinks are common place there, remember this co operates one at Centennial Olympic Park(or Chastain, maybe both), so IMHO, we are will be "targeting" the same audience.

I have been curious about the cost of 3 phase power for the place. The closest 3phase is at the courthouse & Tri-state(although they are non-profit) doesn't have the best track record of being cheap on anything!

I suppose only time will tell, but I am all for drawing & keeping visitors spending money in our little county instead of the surrounding ones!

The ice rink will as the"dead tree that has been removed from down town"a FLOP!!!! If we have a "mild" winter and it doesnt get cold enough to freeze the rink all the way thru then what good will it do,we could put ducks in town that way if we cant skate we can feed the ducks.....the ""mayor"" needs to stop treating blue ridge as her own personal back yard,if she wants to skate buy the field behind the furniture store where she lives and have at it... DONT make the whole damn town pay for HER stupid ideas!!!!!

Local Observer You and I have debated issues in the past and I have enjoyed it. I think this time we will just have to wait and see.

The lodging tax numbers are up mostly because the county increased the lodging tax rate. So that really isn't a good indicator.

I believe the months of January, February and March are still extremely slow except for visitors from Atlanta. And as you said those folks already have access to ice skating rinks. You are correct that Florida visitors would enjoy it, but they don't typically visit during the winter months like they do the rest of the year.

I hope I am wrong but I just don't see it being a big success. I know the downtown merchants are hoping it will be because many of them (so I am told) are doing their best to hang on in this slow economy.

Time will tell my friend!

I feel dubious at best that many people will get excited about an ice rink -- unless it is free -- what would be the point? Maybe if you can skate for free while eating free biscuits.

It seems to me that the Mayor & City Council of Blue Ridge think that downtown businesses are the only ones that pay their benefits & salary. After all, they are just part time positions. Many are tired of her "Mayberry on steroids" rant which is not going to save the downtown area. Perhaps a little proactive decision making would have enabled them to use the old Farmers Market & gain the benefits from an already established location. How stupid do they think that the residents are with their response when that location was suggested? As the Henry's clearly pointed out Blue Ridge should stick to taking care of their own verus their pathetic land grab along Highway 515. If these supposed "investors realy want to locate in the City then perhaps they should start looking for an empty building, the paper is full of foreclosures. Since the tourist are generally intelligent enough to find downtown, then I do not believe we are big enough for them to lose their way. However, since this is all Donated $$$, perhaps they will be willing to donate the liability insurance that comes along with the city getting involved in everything. Downtown businesses are congested enough, there is practically no parking, & they continue to allow building to the point that you can barely drive down the one way street. Perhaps we can just close the roads downtown & start a trolley service. Although there are other roads than downtown, it seems they are the squeaky wheel. Other road in Blue Ridge need work, but somehow it just does not seem to be important enough to fix them. Perhaps they should take into consideration what was brought up during the pathetic land grab to tax everyone along Highway 515. Just maybe they should take care of what they have currently, after all they will not be in office forever

Time will tell, you are right, but I am going to have clarify a few things that you have said. The lodging tax did increase, but that revenue doesn't go to the chamber, just like the increase that the city voted on, doesn't go to the city's coffers that are supposed to be dedicated strictly for "tourism". The increase in the % that lodging tax increased goes into the general fund of the county & city. I was also looking at the #s of inquiries & visitors who actually found the chamber(with its terrible location & no easy way in) to walk into the "welcome center" and ask for information...those #s were up from this same time last year as well!!

Talk to cabin rental company owners and you will get a different response...they are booking cabins a year in advance for holidays. I work part time downtown & am astonished at the people who are coming here! The most common complaint that I hear ALL THE TIME is: "why are so many businesses closed so early?" These same businesses are the very ones that *itch the loudest & complain that they are struggling... Well maybe it's b/c they don't stay open!!!:)

The Blues & BBQ festival had 7500+- people who paid $5.... There really wasn't anything "for sale" other than tshirts or caps that had the festival logo. The arts in park will bring in 8-10K, light up BR....close to 15K. Granted, those ppl may not be there to buy b/c they don't want to carry the bags around(b/c it's a LONG way to walk from most of the shops all the way back to the municipal parking!),but those same ppl will be back to buy the next day only to find the shop closed!!

I agree that the Farmer's Market would be a great location too...but logistically, it really just doesn't make sense. I am down there all the time & the 2nd most popular question asked is: "Where can my husband and children go & find something to do so that I can browse/shop in peace?" It is a lot farther walk to the Farmer's Market than it is to the park....especially if they are parked in the municipal lot!! So I see why the current admin wants it in the location by the park. I also know that it's "their way or no way", but I believe a lot of the complaints are coming from ppl who aren't even going to be using it, so therefore they see no "benefit" to them. We are living in a world who are only tuned into WIIFM...the "What's In It For Me" station & that is very unfortunate. If we would put our heads & resources together for the benefit of all, then we would be able to prosper even more!! God will remove His hand of blessing from our little area...just talk to surrounding areas/communities (or go onto their topix threads)& you will see just how truly blessed Fannin Co is.

What "industry" would you like Fannin County to focus on Jayson?? There is NO infrastructure here & our workforce skills are very limited!!! We aren't located on a major interstate system, railway... All requirements for major shipping/distribution operations!

We did have the Levi factory some time ago. Admittedly it's not on the same scale as what you want, well...

I feel poor living in Blue Ridge due to others stupidity on some issues that just haven't been addressed properly.

But back to the point, I'd say any large factory that decides to make its roots in Blue Ridge would be a welcome site. A large amount of jobs could open to the community from entry level to higher up.

Let's not forget the large amount of people that went out of work with the Levi factory moved away.

My family all worked there & suffered when it closed, but we all tightened our belts & boot straps & did what was needed to survive! If someone had told us 25 years earlier that Levi's would close the plant and do all the manufacturing in other countries so the corporation could/would be mor profitable...then I doubt we would have all expected to graduate from HS & get a job at Levi's & live happily ever after.... B/c that's what "everyone" did!! We learned to adapt to changes just like our children have learned to adapt with parents who have to leave this area to be able to provide for their family.

When we learn to stop depending on the govt(county, city.....), elected officials and others to provide for us, then we will all lern to work together to benefit each other!
