Scenerio: People who I have been working with for years all of a sudden start treating me as if I'm not there. They are not being mean, as of yet, but they are not talking or telling me anything that happens anymore. What can I do? I thought these people were my friends.

You did something they don't like or they think you did, or your oral hygiene isn't what it should be.

It is hateful the way we get convicted without a trial but it happens all the time.

I would try to get the group together and tell them you have noticed the difference in how they feel toward you. Ask them to put themselves in your place of honestly not knowing what you did to deserve being ostracized without any explanation.

One of them will cough it up eventually and the rest will join in or they won't. Good luck and report back.

It really could be something as dumb as who you voted for. People are a mess.

Quit banging the boss. Take the Obama bumper sticker off your car. Those are the only 2 things I can think of that would turn your co-worker off!

My guess is you're pretty young still and my word of advice is to NEVER EVER be "friends" with co-workers. Tolerate them but don't befriend them. You will most likely have to step on their toes once or twice for your own benefit. You are in a business and unless you learn to fend for yourself you will not succeed.

You're asking "what can I do?"
Simply move on and just continue to do your job. Friendship has no place in a workplace if you're trying to make a living.

Agreed. Totally 100% agreed. Especially if you're in management! Its hard to fire a "friend". But sometimes it's hard not to become friends with people you spend most your day with. I love some of my coworkers, and I would love to hang one of them.

That is definitely true! I have worked around the same amount of people for quite some time now. I care for them (meaning I'd go to their funeral) but I don't get wrapped up in chit chat or gossip. It's pointless and you're walking on thin ice if you do that!

Don't worry about them, they are probably jealous. That is what people do when they are jealous, they won't tell you they are upset, just ignore you. Those people are not, have never been, and will never be your friends, get away from them as much as possible before they try to get some kind of revenge for their perceived wrong. At least now you know who your enemies are.

Never get involved with people you work with on a personal level. People are only out for themselves. Always remain friendly to everyone, But be on your guard. There will always be people that turn on you for one reason or another. But your there to do a job focus on that. take your breaks and lunches else where. When you begin your own thing they will wonder what is up with you. if they are ignoring you then they weren't your friend in the first place. Just focus on the reason you are there for and that is work..But, remember always be nice and friendly.

Excellent advice that most of us learn the hard way.

Revenge? What are you, 12? This person needs advice to succeed in the workforce (as an adult), not that it isn't already hard enough.

"They are probably just jealous" is what completely blind mothers tell their horrible, obnoxious children when their schoolmates hate them. More than likely, either you've done something stupid, or there's a rumor that you did. You can ignore the way you're being treated, or ask what's up. Those are your only options, except qutting your job.

As long as you continue to perform your job, there should be no reason to "friend" your co-workers, boss, etc. It is a business relationship(not a popularity contest). I know that you are upset, but as we age we understand that everyone does not have to LIKE us!
