Good for him, bad for B.I. he has given a lot of his time to this city. He single handedly received a grant to get us new fire trucks. He also has a Deputy chief actually doing inspections keeping our town safe. It will ne a great loss. The Unions are out of controll and he also keeps them in check. They did not het insurance or a raise the last 2 years.

he DID NOT singlehandedly get a grant for firetrucks, his assistant Chief doesn't do inspections, they do have insurance and I believe they got a raise like ALL city employees did last year. Where do you get your facts Barney?

PLEASE check your facts. This is the best news that the city could've gotten. He had a very small part in the grant that got Blue Island recieved. Basically he turned in the paperwork. That fire truck should actually be named Betty(as that who is most responsible for getting it). As far as him being cheif; are you aware that he had never held a command position before making chief. Neither had the Assistant Chief for that matter. So the two guys in charge of the city fire department have never actually been in charge of fires before being appointed to their positions. You don't think that's just a bit of a liability for the City of Blue Island? And how do you think the REAL firefighters feel taking commands from a guy like that? Not to mention he was only actually a firefighter for a very short time. He spent well over a decade as the Fire Prevention Officer. A position that doesn't hold any command nor does it respond to or mitigate emergency calls. And do you know why he even needs a Deputy Chief? Neither does anyone else. Since you seemed to be concerned with budget you should really consider the following. That department existed for over 125 years without a Deputy Chief. The city claims they are broke and can't afford to pay more than four guys to protect your town at any given time(bet you didn't know that); yet they can afford a salary of over $70,000 and a city vehicle for him to drive.Perhaps that's why the guys who protect you while you sleep didn't get a raise. So why exactly is he there? Perhaps it's so that he can cover for the "great" Chief while he is off teaching classes at Morraine Valley during the day while the city is paying him to be the Fire Chief!!!! There's the time that you think he's giving your city. And if you are going to have an unnecessary Deputy Chief shouldn't it be a promoted position that the firefighters can aspire to earn and work toward being promoted to instead of being an appointed position. Though if we don't want to follow that line of thinking shouldn't the city use a little more common sense than to appoint a guy who (everyone on that department is aware) pistol whipped one of the residents of the town while he was on shift? Food for thought Barney.....check your facts and know the whole story.

Hey take it easy. I am a friend of the chief, it was right from his mouth. He wouldn't lie. Look at all he has done. Where do you get your info? He has trained those fireman well and they save lives. Bob makes them go to school constantly so they are up with all the current fires. His deputy chief has a lot of years and classes under his belt. Those guys are professional.

I don't think he can retire until he gets his son a job. And the most important thing the deputy keeps under his belt is a bottle of aqua net.

You know, I heard the city doesn't even give the firefighters pagers that work properly! I mean, how much could they cost? Someone should get a price quote on those things...

I heard that they have to spend the money that they get from the state for training and equipment on things like carpet and windows and appliances because the city won't upkeep the fire stations.

Maybe the reason the two Chief's "bypassed" others that were in "command" positions is because they progressed in the fire service and educated themselves for the positions they hold. Others in "Command" positions have sat back for the past 15-20 and have NEVER aspired to learn anything beyond Firefighter 2 and EMT...the bare minimums...and it shows!!!
