You know, I asked the same thing at a meeting with law enforcement about a month ago and I was told that "things" like that was being built by donations from alumin and well wishers. I thought, what a pile of crap! ASU at one time was an excellent college, but I like you and a lot of others I know have your same thoughts.....ASU has gone to being all about football and also promoting alcohol to all students including the underaged ones and being sure that landmark buildings such as the rock building on depot st. is done away with for the benefit of ASU! My "kin folks" have been in Watauga County since the early 1800's and we detest ASU

Money that ASU receives for building are almost entirely capital funds earmarked for building. That money can not be used for other things no matter how worthy or needed they may be. NC colleges are not just given a pile of money to spend as they please. It doesn't work that way.

Universities grow over time much like any other large bureaucratic organization. Rarely is consideration given to ideas of thriftiness or efficiency, but rather the focus is on expansion. Administrators, departments and personnel often seek consciously or unconsciously to create their own little preserve. Consequently what one department gets something another may claim it needs the same rather than the university pooling resources. A degree offered at one university has to be offered by every university.
Hopefully this time of budget cuts will force administrators to critically examine their programs and personnel to provide a more efficient educational system rather than saying to departments you can decide what can be cut.
The people of North Carolina do not need tax increases so some faculty can teach three classes a semester (nine to twelve hours a week)while running their own businesses orworking around their homes. Cut the bureaucracy and put all faculty back to teaching at least four classes (twelve hours) a week.

The biggest waste was the the new football stadium, as ASU did win 3 championships but have done nothing since 2007 No equal ?? LOL and now they are talking about moving up? I hope they do move up the team will get beat so badly that maybe the university might start considering helping more of the staff besides the coaches as most of the staff is over worked with the exception of the pampered coaches. The worst problem is the change of students. At one time most of the students were very nice and considerate group of people. Now that the ASU is a Football school the students are mainly drunken arrogant fraternity children being obnoxious. One frat was recently expelled for hazing though not reported in most any news. Id like to see a investigation into gifts to players during the champion ships as well. Kind of odd how many of the players had Nice rides "Bling " etc a lot like the Ohio state show if you ask me.

You're way off base, and your ignorance is really showing maddmann. Reality is the only one even close to the facts. Yes, the new building on Depot is largely being paid for with private donations. They are using the original rocks from the building, they are being cleaned at the moment. And your assertion "ASU promoting alcohol to all students including the underaged ones" What is your basis for this absurd statement? What's the evidence? Why do your kinfolks detest ASU? Did they detest the locals who founded ASU? Truth, did you know that ASU is considered one of the most financially stable colleges in the state? Where are the private donations for the APP Cultural Museum?
