Thanks Caldwell County Commisioners for running another business out of town.
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY:

Due to economic issues, Tri-County Motor Speedway has been forced to make the very difficult decision of halting our NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly events for the remainder of 2011.

Tri-County will hold all previously scheduled special events, and this decision does not affect the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race which will run as scheduled on September 24, 2011.

We are racers at heart and this was a heart wrenching and difficult decision to make. We, at Tri-County apologize for any hardships this will cause our group of loyal racers, teams, employees, fans and NASCAR. We so love the sport of short-track racing but due to circumstances beyond our control, can no longer continue to operate.

As most of you are aware, in December of 2009 the Caldwell County Commissioners placed a multitude of restrictions on our track which have virtually cut off any source of income. This, coupled with the poor economy which results in low car counts and low attendance makes it impossible to continue weekly racing.

NASCAR understands our decision was not easy and wishes us well. NASCAR does have a number of racing options in NC for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competitors, find these at NASCAR.com under NASCAR Home Tracks

Please make yourselves heard to the local government, and hopefully we will be able to return to our NASCAR All-American Weekly Series in the future. Our website, www.tricountymotorspeedway.com will remain active with updates.

Again, our deepest apologies to all of you.

God Bless

obviously you haven't had to deal with the loud noises keeping your small children awake till after 11 pm, the car trailers running you off the road, and beer cans and trash thrown in your yard the morning after the race. and even though racing was only one or two nights a week, there was practicing many other times. while i am sorry that people are losing their investment, it was probably not a wise decision to build (or buy) a track in a neighborhood with so many family homes. i actually enjoy stock car racing. i went to races at hickory motor speedway many times as a child and young adult, but that track is not in a rural community. although i hate to sound selfish, it will be a relief to be able to spend time outside again on the weekend.

I used to live in the dead middle of the county and i could still hear the race track.
It is a shame that a compromise could never be worked out. I never understood why the races had to be held at night and not on say Saturday afternoons. The races often went way past most folks bedtimes. in hindsight, it probably never should have been put where it was, in residential areas.
The Hickory speedway near main highway was in a much better location- near a highway anyway.
I suppose the overall depression in the county did not help things for the track either.

Don't blame just one or two commissioners for it. The vote was unanimous on the changes. There was also a time for the public to speak and not one person showed up to oppose it. Where were you then if you don't agree with it then you have to make it publicly known.

Also can anyone tell me how the restrictions cut off any sources of income. The main thing I seen on restrictions is the times for events.

I can see both sides to this. The track was in a bad spot. It really should have been moved at some point to the 321 area in a idustrial zoned area. Im sure it would have helped business to be closer to 321 and if it was in an idustrial zoned area no one could say crap about the noise.
The other thing is to all those that moved into the area around the track after the track was built which was a long time ago, you cant say crap about the noise. You knew it was there before you moved into the area. Would you move next to an airport or rail yard and complain about the noise, probably because you are just one of those type of idiots.
I hope the track can make a go of it in the future but I doubt it, the end of an era for sure.

There is no need to complain now that our Speedway is gone. You should have supported it while it was still open. When the few neighbors who selfishly complained about a little noise, we all should have come to our sports defense and let the commisioners know that these few neighbors were out numbered. To the neighbor that is a race fan and attended Hickory Speedway, Bullshit, you are no fan. It's the same racing, and for the biggest part the same cars. Whether you realize it or not, you just raised your tax rate. This county will not make cuts that will jeopardize county officials jobs. Continue to run off your businesses that are supporting your tax base and your "quiet" little community may just become quieter than you would like.

i have lived here over 35 years and many of my neighbors have lived here much longer. i was very thankful when it was paved. before that i could not hang clothes on my clothesline because of the red dirt that settled all over everything outside. i realize that there have been many new homes built after the track, but this community was relatively heavily populated before it was built. residents did try to ask that it be built somewhere more appropriate. the people who started it were determined that it should be in the community. i don't think that would qualify me or my neighbors as idiots.

i wasn't complaining -just sharing a different side, and i did want people to know that we are not unreasonable people who are happy because a business failed. also, i don't understand how you can determine whether i am a racing fan or not. i did enjoy hickory speedway, but remember it is off of a major highway in a largely industrial area. i don't suppose that really matters anyway, so i won't bother to address that further.
i am sincerely sorry for the people who came to the races. i realize that it is a major sport in the area, and it is nice to have something to do with your family and friends. but with that being said, it was much more than a little noise. if people can hear the cars inside the house with all the windows and doors closed, it is too loud for a rural neighborhood. and it is much more than a noise issue. i realize that the drivers have to have large trailers, but the small roads to the speedway are just not large enough for them to always stay on their side. it is also sad that many people decide to throw their trash and beer cans out in yards rather than take it home to throw it away. i do think that residents should be able to spend time outside in the summer, and be able to talk above the noise. over the years we have tried to make plans away from home on race nights to make it less annoying. as for the community, it is continuing to grow with many new businesses and new families. with or without the race track, it is a great place to live. i do wish the family who owns it the best of luck.

The track was put there illegally to began with. There just wasn't anybody worth a crap in county gov. at the time to do anything about it.

And yes, the county commisioners are to blame. Most of Tri Counties revenue was generated by top level Arca, Pro Cup, Nationwide, and even Sprint Cup teams coming to test there throughout the week. When the commisioners(all of them) decided to stop any functions except on Thursday and Fridays, it pretty much was the beginning of the end. As for the noise....thats just another example of how our society (commisioners) would rather give in rather than hurt any bodies feelings. They should have told the whiney ass neighbors to deal with it rather than to lose the revenue that the county needs in these rough economic times. I guess we can just wait and see the outcome of the lawsuit the track has filed against the county turns out.

I am no idiot, college educated actually and my only regret is that speedway wasn't shut down yrs ago! Absolutely put somewhere it never should have been and has faced controversy the entire time. I have lived in area, close by the track my entire life. I will say noise has never bothered me, only trashy fans wth no respect for neighbors. Fans leave there and dump their trash out in my front yard... cans, bottles, hell... sometimes the whole foam cooler. For someone to say neighbors are "idiots"... well I suppose you are one of the redneck gearhead morons who toss the trash in the first place. Just like anything else, just takes some to ruin it for everyone!

I see why your post name is "WHAT"....because you have no clue. The lawsuit is not over, by any means. And I agree that neighbors have the right to be upset over trash being thrown in their yard. But trash isnt the reason it had to cut out the weekly racing. And its not the reason that several hundred families arent spending money in our county now on Friday nights but instead are going to Catawba or Burke. But as long as your precious yard is clean.....thats okay.

The commiss did not stop the daily practice. that was put in place back in 1990. this owner has been running illegal and if had put the noise back down where nobody complained, would still be doing it. we tried to discuss with him and his wife, and were told in a NJ accent to move it we don't like it. My family was here over 75 years and fought Ken Greene when he built it. I won't lose any sleep over the peace and quite that was ripped from us 25 yrs ago. They almost drove the golf course out of business with the noise, so now it has a chance to build back up and it will more than make up the tax revenue that the track may have lost.
