Cult / Denomination?

I open this forum to anyone who thinks the church of Christ is a cult or a denomination.

My challenge is PROVE IT!

You can bring up Alex Campbell, the Restoration Movement, or ANYTHING you think will help your case.

I'll have no problem answering anything.

Seek out your pastor's help if you need it.

why target one denomination? just because they don't use music? what makes you think the Stone-Campbell movement has a link there. Your amazing...like any denomination, each has different ties, one cup, paid vs. non-paid, bi-vocational...just plug in any faith. I don't know if you'll get many takers but I bet you wouldn't be willing to identify yourself to sit down and discuss these like mature adults.

I have four questions:
1) Do you believe baptism is essential for salvation?
2) Do you believe you can lose your salvation?
3) If the answers to 1 and 2 are yes, are you baptized again every time you sin?
4) If the answer to 3 is no, then aren't you lost?

Just a simple yes or no is all I really want on these.

I'm a member of the Church of Christ and have been since birth, I don't know much about other denominations or what their belief's are but please explain how your think that the Church of Christ is a cult?

I too am a member of the church, but not since birth. I grew up attending a "denomination." I had a friend in high school who worships with the church of Christ and I would attend with her some. I had questions about some of the things that I had been taught in the "denomination," but I was too young and ignorant to question anyone. I then met and married a man who is a member of the Lord's church. And when I put away all the things that I had been told all my life and focused solely on God's word - the truth was plain and simple. The Lord's church is not a cult.

Ok...I'll bite. Here's something I've always wondered. Regarding the ban on musical instruments. COC folk will cite this verse in Colossians that this is what they are instructed to do.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.(Col. 3:16)

So if they cite using psalms...how do you get around what Psalm 150 instructs us to do:

Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals

What difference does it make if you sing with instruments or not I do not believe God will judge you for that. We need to be concerned about reading the Bible and try to live by his word.

you bring up a good point, and I have never judged those who choose not to but the subject was brought up on another topic because some of those that don't do judge those that do. And never got an anwser as to why. still waiting Heath

This is a little off the topic of this thread - but maybe this explanation will help: "As a result of the distinctive plea of the church - a return to New Testament Faith and practice - acapella singing is the only music used in the worship. This singing, unaccompanied by mechanical instruments of music, conforms to the music used in the apostolic church and for several centuries thereafter (Ephesians 5:19). It is felt that there is no authority for engaging in acts of worship not found in the New Testament. This principle eliminates the use of instrumental music.

The instrument issue is moot with me. I simply brought it up because many COC members make a bit issue of it, from a scriptural point of view. I just was asking for clarification on a verse they use often to make their point.

This is New Testament.... do people in the church of Christ speak in tongues?
