Risky business: The EPA fingers the county's toughest air challenge

Full story: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The numbers are stark and disturbing. They hint at loss, suffering and death. Pittsburghers have known, based on previous reports, of the poor air quality in communities near U.S. Steel's Clairton coke works.

Perhaps the partisans of US Steel have some comments on this....Seeing as how most of them no longer even live in Clairton.

CAN YOU HEAR ME, FREDDIE-BOY?

Maybe the adherents of the "hard truth that everybody knows" can rationalize this as a
RACIAL problem.

TALK TO US....MR RILEY!

Oh....and NAS....let's here some more comments about "innocence and blameless"

Shut these businesses down and forget about it. The Obama government will take care of us, we have nothing to fear. All private business is the enemy.

That's very nice.....now refute one point in the EPA Report. Please.....no more propaganda from US Steel.

Yes, Executives who prefer to threaten people with their jobs because they are too lazy and incompetent to do their own probably DO qualify as "enemies". Had they not been lazy and incompetent for thirty years solid maybe the Japanese steel industry would have gotten the short end. Now having failed against foreign competition, they are reduced to what they ARE good at -- whining, poor-mouthing and making excuses.

Yes....companies like that SHOULD go out of business!

Problem....resistance from US Steel and the USW
Solution...support Cap and Trade to break their financial and poltical back.

A long bloody struggle still lies ahead, but I have no doubt as to the outcome

Someone needs to direct you to the Western Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. It isn't even located in Clairton so you should be pretty safe there.

Its in Pittsburgh. Not too far from the offices of US Steel. You can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Who said anything about killing people? I am merely supporting my Commander-in-Chief in his efforts to end US Steel's program of chemical warfare against the people of this region. I have also supported proposal to develop alternate industries.

Is it your position that it is the Coke Works or nothing? The problem with that argument is that it is ALREADY the Coke Works AND nothing. None of the executives and very few of the workers even LIVE in Clairton anymore. Therefore the incomes are spent in and the taxes paid to other communities.

If you have any doubt that this is true, compare the average income of the town with the average income of that dump. Most of the money is going somewhere else

We would get a better deal from a foreign army of occupation. All USS/USW give back to this community is poison gas. Those people may not be able to swing a better deal anywhere else -- but please let's stop the whining about their being "blameless" or "innocent". They are just hit-and-run mercenaries armed with toxic gas.

Oh RAS everything you say is 100% right. You couldn't have said it any better than that. Everyone agrees with you. You are such a leader. How in the world would this blog have ever accomplished anything without all of your wisdom. You sure do have all the answers. You are the greatest!!! NOT YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!

Well now - Ya' know, that's how we got rid of the entire steel industry. Might as well keep going, the greenies want us to live in caves again, anyway.

We got clean air, no jobs
We got clean water, no jobs
We got no industry, no jobs

However, we got government, we got non-profits, we got schools, we got hospitals and not a one of 'em pay any taxes. Go figure!

Has anyone passed clairton works recently? The coke that was stock piled has now been shipped and there is very little left on the ground. A few other plants are coming out of idle and more batteries have been fired up at the works. More workers are getting called back and little by little things are picking up. Hopefully the billion dollar upgrade is in the future. Workers are getting their jobs back and that is what matters first to me and i'm sure a few others on these clairton posts.
