I'm sorry that Ashley, the girl in this article, did not get accepted at IU. Her rank is enviable, but her GPA and especially her SAT score that falls below the national average are likely to blame for her rejection. She could have retaken the SAT or tried the ACT to result in a higher score, too, so either she didn't bother retaking or she DID and still couldn't raise it above the national average. For her to be in the top 10% of her class and still score just below the national average on SAT doesn't make her high school look very rigorous or academically strong.

Perhaps IU admits students who present the best admissions applications, not just Indiana residents, with the hope that these students will contribute more to the academic well-being of the university. They can't take ONLY Indiana residents.

I was rejected by plenty of colleges too, including my three favorites, so I understand how devastating it can be and how it hurts. But that is real life: no guarantees of anything. Like me, Ashley will put on her "big girl panties" (as my older sister told me to do), regroup, and look forward to college somewhere else.

I wish her well.

Why is this so surprising? Her GPS and SAT scores were below the national average? This is the status quo for hoosier schools, nothing new. Indiana schools continue to fail under the current Daniels administration, and he seems bent to allow it to continue, privatize it away, or just close the schools. Nothing is being done to improve the quality of education (in the majority of areas in this state, Carmel is a totally different area). For years Indiana has allowed it's schools systems to fail, and that's why they continue to fall into the stats as the lowest rated schools in the nation on average. Sure there are a few that excel, but they are a maintained minority amongst the detritus of the majority of school systems. The fact that hoosiers can't get into a college or university isn't surprising under those circumstances, so now we have a system where those graduating from our high schools having received a subpar education have to go to subpar community schools or vocational schools instead of schools providing the educational programs that a student really wants. Our students need to be informed that even though they do well in our schools, it won't be enough to get them into a good college due to the lowered standards that give them false hope. So unless you are wealthy and can buy yourself into a school, have someone with influence at a school to get you in over those who do qualify, or are one of the lucky few who manage to test into the admissible standards used by the universities, you don't have a chance.

Luck is all you have left. Thanks Mitch and George

Our son just graduated from IU. We went to the graduation and the Dean's address both from IU and Purdue were wrought with their political ideology and liberal views. Many in the audience were offended. They are indoctrinating our kids with this crap. I would not send any of my other 3 kids to either school.

They just stopped short of praising a socialist state. It was outrageous. Oh and guess what --- we couldn't read any of the names on the program because few were American.!!!!!!!

Research other schools, honey, but I am afraid that the political climate is so left wing that this kind of education is what is being offered.

We do better job of educating other nations kids than we do our own, and this is by design. Our nation needs to dumb down so that we can go back to the conservative ideal of the 50s, it's long overdue too. Our Man Mitch is dedicated to this and has been working hard on the closing of the schools we no longer need and pushing the money towards the affluent schools where it's needed the most, making sure that only the right people get the right education. These are the students that will be able to afford a proper out of state education.

Tobacco Joe. I beg to differ. I think people were way smarter in the 50's than they appear to be now. People could add and subtract without a calculator!!! People are so buried in the Tube today that they think Pop culture is more important than a major tax that is going to cripple this nation. Half don't even pay attention. I didn't grow up in the 50's but I find the education sorely lacking from K-12.

I think that what Tobacco Joe is referring to is the minority education provided back in the 50s. And that seems to be the quality of education that Indiana is trying to fall back into. True the average student from the 50s in Indiana probably was better educated in the basics than most Indiana children today. Indiana seems to always cut costs for the state by cutting costs to it's already dismally supplied education system and as with so many other things in the country, Indiana always rates at the bottom in quality/quantity. We should be so proud of our state government for maintaining such low standards for the future of our children.

This is really becoming a sad state of affairs. Our kids are being indoctrinated by the educational systems and people with conservative or independent values and morals (that our country was founded on) are being pressured out.

Also, anyone have a list of conservative colleges in Indiana? I have a daughter who is going to be graduating high school next year.
I think we need to stop supporting schools that want to cater to international students rather than our hoosiers!

Hey, as long as the state education system is run by capitalists, as it should be, there will be foreign students, much more profitable to the state than the uneducated students the public system sends to the universities. I'm not saying we should restrict the state schools to locals only, I'm all for making higher profits by bringing in out of state and foreign students. If they can afford it, great. Our Great Governor Mitch runs things this way to get money back, money he knows will never come from Hoosiers. And to help get the lower life Hoosiers to move out, he will continue to cut educational funding in order to keep the flow of the poor, unemployed, unwanted and such, keep it flowing out of state and get them off the the state systems.

You have no clue as to Our Great Governor Daniels plan is. He's getting rid of the liberals, he's forcing them to leave the state leaving nothing behind but failed schools and failed companies. The only thing he wants to keep in this state are the wealthy and those that serve them, that's all. The best way to do that is to kill the public education systems and only allow for expensive private education for the wealthy, and to get rid of the overpriced jobs in manufacturing and replace them with as many low wage jobs as he can, or like I said, get those people to leave the state, which is best for them and for Mitch!

Mitchs biggest problem is that he can't get it done fast enough.

Too right boyo! It just ain't happening fast enough. I just wonder when the state will raise tuition on instate students so that it costs less to go out of state (and stay there) than to go to a state school. I know Mitch wants all of the state schools to turn a profit, and that would be a good way. Cut out as many of those overpriced teachers and raise the cost of going there. If he can't do that, then close them all, they aren't needed anyway. We need to get this turned around fast, get things back to the dark ages like Newt Gingrich wanted to do, turn back the clock, turn it WAY back. Make it so that the only ones who would be educated would be those in the nobility, Mitch has the right ideas, but isn't working fast enough to make it happen.
