The Hamlet of Wallkill is in the Town of Shawangunk (Shon-gum, pronunciation as it appears in the Town pamphlet), Ulster County, NY; the Town of Wallkill is where Middletown, NY is located, and is in Orange County, New York. Media, visual and printed, seem be unable to separate these two separate identities.
The word Wallkill means wall on the river; kill being the Dutch word for river. The hamlet of Wallkill is right on the Wallkill River (which flows north out of New Jersey), and had a wall to keep the river in it's banks when the community was first founded. It is an old community, with an interesting history, worthy of it's own identity.
This is history I learned in Jr. High School in the John G. Borden School, in the Hamlet of Wallkill, Town of Shawangunk, Ulster County, NY, where my late Grandmother was the Town of Shawangunk Town Clerk.
