He should have killed the boy with the wrench and claimed self defense; works in Monroe County.

Hough, while he should have shown a little restraint; was entirely justified. People shooting at cars, not too bright. He did what THEIR PARENTS SHOULD HAVE DONE. And what would the Ontario County sheriff have done if Mr. Hough was shot in the eye, and crashed and died, taking out a busload of kids on their way to summer camp? This is ridiculous. Let him out with an unconditional discharge that he not beat any kids unless they deserve it, as these two jerks did.

I agree! Mr. Hough deserves a pat on the back from giving these little brats a taste of old fashion butt kicking,,, Imagine him getting shot in the eye and running over these deputies kids, then we'd see what kind of justice could be served....

I would like to give Mr Hough a pat on the back. If it were my kid that shot at a car with a BB gun, I would let him rot in jail for a couple of nights. Whey doesn't the headline read, "Youth arrested after shooting at moving automobile". What would the headline be if the driver was forced into the other lane into a head on crash, after his window exploded, "Driver charged with Reckless endagerment, ticketed for driving on the wrong side?"

Please print the name of the parents.

So, striking a child in the head with a piece of FORGED STEEL is justified?!

Just call the cops, and be done with it...What is with the vigilante mentality around here lately?!?

Vigilante nothing! What were those boys thinking??!! My cousin hit a bridge embuckment after kids threw a rock at her car from a bridge. Permanent damage that will last the rest of her life. Mr. Hough needs no apologies. He did what ANY of us would've done in the moment. Now instead of whining they were "attacked" why don't their parents stand up agree that they deserved it!!!

I'm not defending what the kids did...

This guy was 68, and couldn't control his anger...He should be punished for his actions, as should the kids...He is not judge, jury, and (possibly) executioner...You do NOT hit kids with a piece of STEEL...Especially in the HEAD!

I'd like to hit him a few times in the head with a piece of soft maple just to drive the point home.

I betcha the kids learned there lesson and will never take a shot at a moving vehicle ever again.
Where are the parents in this matter? I think parents should teach by example and if they don't learn by the parents then let the public have there turn. A horrible accident was avoided but what about next time when someone loses there life. Or society could just slap the boys on the wrist and wait for them to brag in school and then watch a chain reaction happen.

Hey Not Right! You're right, don't used a forged instrument, use the same BB gun that they shot him with...30 years ago, my Dad would have beat me worse than Mr.Hough and you know what, I respected him for it! Let's go back to the way things used to be, then maybe these stupid kids might get the message a little clearer...

I don't know if I would have hit a person in the head with a hammer vs. calling the police.

I guess this is what one would call an eye for an eye and a pellet for a head.

I don't think that two wrongs make a right.

One has a right to do to another what has been done to them. I don't believe that these two acts are even exchange, but then, I personally would have just called the police.

This gentleman is probably fed up with the youth of today. Sir, you can't go around clocking people in the head with hammers, no matter what, call the police.

The difference is that your dad would have hit you in the behind with a belt, his hand, or possibly a paddle, or maybe slapped you around on the face...I doubt he would have used something that could cause blunt force trauma on your brain.

Wake up peopleĀ…He's lucky he didn't cause serious brain damage, or worse yet kill the kid.

This is a little odd. First of all, they didn't mention how old the kids were. To me, this is a relevant part of the story. If they're like 12, then hitting them with a steel bar is a bit extreme; If they're like 15 or 16 though, I can see where a 68 year old man might need to use something more than his fists.

There's not much of Mr. Hough's side of the story here, but I can logically conclude it went something like this:

They shot at his car, scaring the bejesus out of Mr. Hough. When he realized what happened, he turned around, drove back up to the 'youths', and they just stood there with a "What are YOU going to do about it" attitude. At which point, Mr. Hough grabbed a tire iron out of his car, and WHAM-O. "That's what I'm going to do about it" replied Mr. Hough.

This makes sense, because if the kids had run off or done anything OTHER than just standing there or mouthing off to Mr. Hough, he wouldn't have had time to turn his car around, grab a steel bar out of his trunk, and then smack 2 of them....so I conclude this is how it played out.

With that said, I think if he had simply smacked them upside the head (and not used a steel bar) he would probably not be facing any charges. I, personally, would have just taken their BB gun and drove off to call the cops.

BTW: To those who say he should have just called 911, if he had no cell phone, he may not have had that as an option....it could be miles and miles to find a pay phone, or public business...this IS Honeyoye, afterall. I also think the kids should have had more charges against them....that's incredibly dangerous.

They were treated at the scene. Translated, no big deal as far as injuries. His part was blown out of proportion and the kids part has been minimized. Must have some influential parents that need a good kick in the butt.

this is the only way these little pre-prison kids should be treated....poor little jonny was only practicing his shooting getting ready for the big time..a real gun to take out someone....good for Hough just trying to set the kids stright.
