This is the 97th year of the Shiprock Northern Navajo and its still the same. Im only 21 years old and now I have a daughter, I didn't know the fair was to remain the same for her also. Don't get me wrong, I love ALL the festivities and people and the excitement. But I really wish there were actual restroom facilities and atleast a big place to sit and eat. Those stands got filled up pretty easily and there was no where else to go. And oh my God, it rained so much, there was no where to go besides them old exhibit halls with the water dripping through..what if that exhibit collapsed with water drifting throught the openings? Oh yea, and why were we getting yelled at for throwing candy from the floats? Isn't that supposed to be the fun and exciting part? And what about the Yei'Bi'Chei grounds...where was the tractor to clear some of the mud? Its sort of embarrasing to have people come from so far and we don't have sanitized facilities like Window Rock fair? I guess the Fair board ignores all of this and look forward to the big check splits huh.

We need new fair board officials....get some people that want to improve the conditions of the fair grounds. Put in some younger people with fresh ideas in there. The "exhibit hall" needs to be torn down and new buildings built for ALL the festivities. Where does all the money go? Where???Nothing was improved from last year. Time for the current fair officials to stepped down.....and let's put some new people in. Also, I would like to thank the people (APS?) that served the barbecue dinner.....it was very delicious.

$250 per float
$500 per political floats

$7.00 entry fee
$300 -$500 food stand

Estimated people around 100,000!

That estimated over $1,000,000!!!!!!!!!! WHERE IS THE IMPROVEMENTS? WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? I ASKED ONE WORKER AS I WAS PAYING MY ENTRANCE FEE AND SHE SAID IT GOES TO THE POW-WOW DANCERS/RODEO PRIZE MONIES, ARE YOU KIDDING ME, If I understand correctly, they get their own money raised for prizes!!
Please someone tell me where the $$$ made will go other than someone's DEEP POCKETS!

I heard someone was murdered again at the fair. I don't know if this is true. If this is the case, I really think the fair board should reconsider hosting the Yei Bi Cheii ceremony due to the violence. They should have it separate from the fair where there are more security and different dates or not have it at all. Some of us still uphold the traditional teachings and condone all that has been occuring at the fair during the last several years. Fair board- You people need to hold the Yei bi cheii more sacred and quit looking at the profit!!!!

I agree, the entrance fee was so much and there is no improvement of roads, fair grounds, exhibit halls and etc. Besides, the Yei Bi Cheii Ceremony is not suppose to happen until after the first frost. We need to change the fair date until after the first frost and the Yei Be Cheii is not suppose cross the river or waters.
What happen to our traditional ways? Remember Fair Board, the Yei Bi Cheii is not suppose to happen until after the first frost. The Fair Board needs to advertise Fair Board meetings so the community can get involved..........what do you think? We need new ideas and diverse group of people.

Where are the No desert rock people? They should concentrate their efforts on getting rid of old buildings on the fair grounds which are a health hazard. It would be worth their while...instead of fighting a losing battle...

I don't think Desert Rock has anything to do with the Fair stick to your subject....and it might not be a losing battle to some who really believe what they are fighting for maybe your voice would make a difference it was known rather than the ramblings you make on the internet.

I do believe it is a time for change with the Fair Board too many wives, husband, brother and sister reap the benefits....Sally Begay, Mr. Yabeny, The Manuelitos.....etc. We need modern facilities with nice rest areas for the elderly...paved parking lots, lights, and of course arenas that have sheltered seating....is that too much too ask. Maybe they need an outside company to handle the finances and see what we actually pay out and what type of profit the Fair of the People makes. Take it to your newspapers, reporters, chapters, council delegates, business development office maybe if we start inquiring they will get tired of us and make changes.

the shiprock fair was okay, the only thing that sucked was to rain and the mud! that messed up my saturday last weekend... yeah sucked!!!that's right S-U-C-K-E-D!!! hopefully, they have better activties by the time the 100th annual comes! such as... having a famous, popular recording artist come and do a concert like what they did at the window rock fair instead of having local navajo rez bands come and do battle of the bands! i mean, wait! that's just lame! well yeah

I would say to the Fair Board:

For crowd control, traffic control, and safety:

1. Put the Pow Wow at the D-gym or at the Pit. There is plenty of parking space there, let the pow wow ppl keep their own money for prizes, etc.
2. Put the Rodeo in one location, outside of frickin Shiprock, where there will be room for all the stock, horsetrailers, etc. These ppl can also charge their own fees for rodeo ppl.
3. Place the indian market, food vendors, exhibits, all in one area, like a huge event, charge them one fee.
4. Put the carnival in one location, where the kids can be monitored, no dark areas, and pay one fee, because some kids just wanna hang out at the carnival.
5. Blacktop a few acres for parking, use these monies to upgrade facilities, pay for decent restrooms, etc.
6. Put all the music ppl, bands, entertainment in one location too.

Let all these place be near each other, charge a cheap fee if you want to choose just one event, or charge a overall fee to enter all these events.

FAIR BOARD GET WITH THE DANG PROGRAM, WE LIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY NOW!! NO IMPROVEMENTS AT ALL.

Let's elect a new fair board every 4 years. These people can't have control every year, there is nothing to show for all those costly events!!!

the thing that sucked about the fair was that they blocked traffic on a state hiway for two hours for the parade which is BS. they need to find a new place for the parade, maybe Navajo route 36!

How many years has this fair taken place. DUH! 97th! So what's going on with all the profit made. Is it still being pocketed by the committee members. Over the past years we have heard that the fair was going to be moved South of Shiprock, yet nothing. Only one time, the parade had made a change... But that wasn't good enough. It's been put back where it always has been. Come on Fair Committee members! WAKE UP!

Dam with all the money that make during the fair they should at least pave the fair grounds so nobody will be playing in the mud or dust I bet they just pocket the money just like our council deligates do

Those of you that are truly disgusted with the fair in Shiprock should just stay away from there. Like you all said, this fair has been going on for 97 years, shouldn't you have learned by now. Things will probably never change, but hey you can always go to Window Rock fair since you praise it so much! Those so called rez bands, are just people trying to do something good for themselves, everybody needs to start somewhere. Its not like you just wake up one morning and just become famous! Don't get me wrong, I agree with all of you.The fair board needs to make some major adjustments, its ugly out there, still!

There are a lot of things that i disagree with when it comes to shiprock Fair. For me the best thing about Shiprock fair is the YeiiBicheii, The Yeiibicheii is the most essential conponent that has made SHiprock Fair what it is Today. For 97 Years through WIND, RAIN, HAIL, SNOW, and MOre wind and rain People continue to Watch fireside the yeiibicheii, old grnadmaothers and Grandfathers and Nalis sit through the cold to watch the our holy ones. i hardly see any elder complain about the Rain that occured this past year, It was cold yes but As NAVAJOS we SHOULD appreciate the Rain. And yes there are those who Say the First Frost, But to those who know how the navajo Calender work the end of the harvest period and the begining of a new "NAVAJO" Calendar year is at the begining of October within the First Crescent moon. Anyways beside that the Roads, the mud, the Sand, the wind, not enough restrooms, etc., well thats always going to be a problem, no answer to that. Well the opther things is that, Where is all the money going, ill tell you where all the money is going, THE FREAKIN FAIR. Come on people, think about it if the board was scandaling or pocketing money, Don;'t you think they would have been caught or all over the Navajo times. THink about it, all the events that take place in the fair cost Money and lots of it. With rising food and gas prices, every thing and everyone is affected. ALso the Parade route, Whre else are suppose to take! huh, COme on, if all you are going to do is complain and not help think about another route, all your doing is putting down the hard work of a handful of people who work year long to setup the Fair overall.
Anyways Overall I love Shiprock Fair, the One time of the year i foward to. Theh Curly Fries (although Exspensive), the Indian Market, the Exhibits, the song and dance, and most of all the YeiiBiCheii.
and to those who agree KUDOS, and to those who will continue to complain, Get some mud boots a rain poncho or some jams to listen to when your stuck in traffic for like forever, but be prepared.

I agree with mr roan. If you don't like how things are going, there is room for volunteer work, even to contribute with service projects. I enjoy the fair every year even with all its failings. No one is perfect. All we can do is try to be happy.

The 100th Annual Northern Navajo Nation Fair has already been plagued with theft and corruption. The $48,000 that was deposited on May 19, 2011, has been depleted to $18 checking and $30 savings. Fair Director Lloyd Smith says he had to pay his family for their services.

All them years and no improvement? That's almost a century. Proof how greedy they are and there's almost no hope. Nobody on the board, the navajo nation government, the shiprock chapter care for their people. Only about getting free money and spending it on themselves. They know they can get away with it so whynot. Yet navajos still vote for these people. There's no change or will there ever be the way its going. Only talk of a fantasy world. No people of action.

There are people out there whos only interest is to create havoc and spread lies. You know who your are. Cyber Libel and Cyber Slander are crimes. Among other crimes that have been committed.

You are trying to do the job of the Navajo Nation Auditor General. What you need to do is to get the schooling necessary to do the Auditor General's job and do it. I don't think that the Auditor General lets his personal thoughts get it the way of his job. So far there have been so many different (numbers) figures thrown around that you are committing libel. Get your facts straight.

Now on the other hand there is a story circulating in the local "scuttle butt" that your misleading information may have caused physical attacks on the member(s) of the Fair Director's Staff. Now for the people involved that might fall into the category of the "RICO" statute crime, which makes that a Federal Crime. For those involved sake I hope that story is not true. Lets hope those boys weren't put up to what they did!
