I think our forefathers would be groaning in their graves if they knew some people were using the "freedom" argument to allow people to torment their neighbors by making their surroundings a junkyard. It's simple: you want to live in a pigsty, that is your choice. Cover it up. I agree with Nut Up or Shut Up. Don't force us to see your junkyard everytime we go for a drive.

Freedom in this country doesn't mean you can do whatever the hell you want. There are laws, there are rules, there is zoning, and it has to be that way to have a civilized society. You'd better believe Jefferson et al would be saying, "clean it up! You're turning this country into a slobby, lazy, fat, pathetic eyesore!"

First. I think that people that do not live here should keep their opinon to themselves this is an issue for the local citizens to take care of, not someone from another state nor in another part of NM. I know we have a junk problem in SJ I am an ex-Realtor. It is hard to sell real estate in the county because of this problem. If we granfather in the properties that now exist with the multi cars on the property and just get rid of the other junk refridgeraters and other like junk, and pass an ordinance allowing no more of this to go on, and if a property changes ownership it has to be cleaned up this problem would be resolved in a few years, without hurting the car hoaders right now. I also wonder about these places being used as a place of business without a license or paying taxes on such sales of parts. Whoops maybe it is time to investigate a little further these people and what they are doing and are they actually in business??
Have you never heard of outside opinions? I was born and raised in Aztec, still have a lot of family there so my opinion is just as valid as yours. Thats why this is an open forum.

If everyone is complaining about lower property values are you all trying to sell out or what? Lower property values mean lower property taxes right? If you are not selling your property what difference does it make how much it might or might not sell for. Build a fence,or a wall and live in your little bubble with no friends because they may judge you by the way your neighbors yard looks. If they were true friends you would not worry about such vain things. If your property is for sell and its because you are tired of looking at your neighbors "junk" then take what you can get and move to your paradise(where ever that is) and just be happy you no longer have to look at your neighbors "junk".

I only recently returned to New Mexico after being gone for three and a half years. I can't believe that the fictional story in my novel, Junkyard Dreams, has become a reality in San Juan County. In the book, real estate developers threaten to close a woman's junkyard, a place that has existed for two generations. Why is it that people flee cities, move to small towns, and then want to make a rural community as sterile as the one they left behind them?!
