Farmington's ECHO Food Bank struggles to keep up with demand

Jul 30, 2013 Full story: Farmington Daily Times 10

Just behind two new multi-million dollar buildings that house the San Juan County Public Health Office and the San Juan County District Attorney's offices is a fossil of an old warehouse, willfully standing a half-century beyond its expiration date.

Farmington and SJC are very poor, but there are also relatively wealthy residents here and CHURCHES--lots of them. Between those demographics, there is NO reason for ECHO to go wanting.

Unbelievable.

Yes, Farmington has its share of Pharisees (church hypocrites) who are content in their insulated piety as poverty and need surround them.

Farmington's "elite" are a joke, stroking their egos with their occasional "charity" social events, when even one of them could pull the necessary bucks from their own pockets.

Although Farmington's wealthy are no match for many areas and their rich, there are a few people here who pull in millions and are certainly capable ALL BY THEMSELVES of keeping ECHO on its feet.......AND not even feel the pain.

I laugh when I think of the "lower" class infiltrating one of their laughable charity ballls.

And there are churches here who turn away people who don't look and act like them.

Hypocrites all.

Oh whine snivel whine.

Churches have their own systems for helping the poor. Some even have their own charities, their own food banks, their own housing for the poor, their own complete welfare systems. Church goers are also forced to pay taxes to fund government charity. Why should only church goers be picked upon over this? What about the other half of people who never set foot in church? Why are they off the hook and have NO responsibility to help the poor? Only religious people are required to pick up the whole tab?

The real hypocrites are the people who snivel and whine because they don't think other people are doing enough.

What's ironic is that a lot of Farmington is obese, often morbidly so. How many people in this town are actually 'starving'? It seems that most people are suffering from an excess of food rather than not enough. I was at the DMV the other day - every single person waiting there weighed at least 200 lb.

Ha, well said.

I don't think most of these people are starving for nutritious food - most of them need to cut their caloric intake, exercise, and they'd be in much better health. They are certainly not lacking in vitamins (or Vitamin Water).

You could argue that junk food is cheaper than healthy food, but you can still buy a decent amount of vegetables at Smiths or Fresh for Less for the same price as a week's worth of generic soda pop and safeway brand fritos. Junk food is addictive and habit-forming -'you can't eat just one'.

Statistics would tell us that there is "hunger" in America. No doubt there are nutritional deficiencies as well. But that is not the same thing as hunger.

How can the most obese country in the world also have (statistically) a high rate of hunger? It can't. Hungry or starving people are not obese. Those two things do not coexist. Nutritional deficiency and obesity can be linked.

Another question--there are enough food programs in America that no one should be hungry. Maybe we have problems other than hunger that foster the condition--laziness, drug and alcohol abuse.......

The food bank should set up a soup kitchen and stop handing out hundreds of dollars worth of food to people who just come in.
