MAJOR ERROR: The fire chief for District 1 is Michael "Buck" Hamilton, not Donovan Mack. Check and recheck your facts - do not assume. It's Journalism 101, folks.

Yeah, Yeah......How many house burn here on the Rez...Just because jurisdiction 2 house burn here on ReZ. You guys are not there for the people YOUR just there for the SHOW. How many times do volunteers firefighter get remarried with in there districts and you Marcum says that all your Firefighter are brothers and sisters (That's BULL). And your asking foe more volunteers. There are times that some fire departments don't even respond right away now you say firefighter live distance from the fire stations, Is that just another excuse. You need to say what you say from the bottom of your HEART, This just a lip talk. You don't know this man (Marcum).

I would encourage people to volunteer, but as long as Larry Marcum is the Fire Chief, I would not suggest the fire department.

I do know that man (Marcum) and he has done nothing but bring that fire department off the ground. if you are mad that it takes so long to respond to calls on the rez, why dont YOU volunteer! dont cry about something unless your willing to try and make a difference.

To ganderson_69:
First of all you might want to go back to school and learn how to write an intelligible letter. Second of all why are you so bitter against the fire department? It's no one's fault that you live too far out for a timely response except your own. Maybe you should help your community instead of sitting back and criticizing the people who are getting up in the middle of the night to respond to calls.

To Former FF:

There must be a reason you're a FORMER ff, and I'm sure it wasn't all Larry Marcum's fault.

We have volunteers, but they all need to get properly trained by qualified professionals who have experience and are up-to-date on these practices. changes need to be made and its starts at the top. san juan county needs to have these trained/qualified ff's paid and on stand-by. yes ff's get paid 10/per call, but have to wait months before they see any money in their pocket.

I respect your opinion but if you're really from NY I doubt you know what kind of department this was 8-10 years ago. This organization has improved by leaps and bounds. Back then the FF were paid 0 for a call. We can't all have paid departments because taxpayers don't want to foot the bill.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to get on these San Juan county fire departments.I'm also a former volunteer fire fighter. The people on these departments are stupid and alot of them, I'd be scared if they responded to an accident with me in it. I'd pry be better off without them. I give kudoos to Farmington Fire Department, they perform well. San Juan county and Bloomfield, thats just scary. They need new fire chiefs around here!

The only thing I would recommend is going thru the Fire Acadamy. You don't have to be a volunteer to go thru it. It teaches so much, medical, CPR, wildland fire, ect. That will teach you more then the chiefs in this county can.

I'm an EMS provider in San Juan county and in the city of Farmington. I have volunteered in my town for 20 yrs Fire/EMS. It'a thankless job most of the time, but rewarding to the volunteer and those on the dept. People don't realize the commitment of being on call 24hrs. Responding to calls when the public is asleep in bed and working in the elements most people avoid. Only to get home in time and get ready for work. Getting up from the dinner table to answer the page or have to interrupt family plans to go help a stranger. So I say thanks to the volunteers from Districts 1-14, Aztec, Bloomfield and to Farmington Fire for your commitment and assistance.

Relate this story to Senator John Arthur Smith, Demings, or Senator Michael Sanchez, Los Lunas...the only two legislators that holds the Senate Ace of Spade. They don't think that additional funding for fire stations or firemen is much needed, thus no funding for these critical needs areas.

We in SJ county are lucky to have some great fire fighters both volunteer and paid. I Don't think they get the thanks they deserve often enough.

Our law enforcement is also top shelf as well.

Thank all of you for doing a very good job.

I as a volunteer i understand the complications of a difficult volunteering job, there me be politics in this form of work. most of my brothers and sisters of many districts know that we are not here for the glory but are here to make a difference in our community. we put our lives on the line so another may live, or some one can have a home to go to, or a car to drive. we all wish with a snap of a finger that a fire will go out, or a heart will beat again, but we don't. we as volunteers have to work with what we have. It is not that you see the good, the news just wants to show how we are fouled, but we as san juan county fire fighters do save live you just can't see it. many are very devoted to our community, and will put our own lives on the line for you. so join a department or go to a meeting, and find out what we do, and maybe you will see our side of the story.
