Auxiliary tours VA hospitals with gifts of cheer

50 years ago this chrismas i was a 9 year old boy in the tb sanitorium in talihina with histoeplamois. i remember the visits and presents i got from locale people.talihina must be a good place to live. i have always wanted to visit there again. i remember one spechle naurse Geneva Kennedy her husband John who was a janitor . they has two childen around my age. i live for away now in the NWT of canada. i visit my home town in delaware co. once in awhile . i was on a road not long ago near murfpyreeboro and mena ark. a sign said 100 mi. to talihina, how i wanted to turn and go there. maybe someday i will robert carroll

Hi Robert
The TB hospital is now a Veterans Center, it is a long term center for Veterans. I have had the plesure working there for the past 22 years. It is a great place to work. There is nothing like living and working in the Country. My maden name is Kennedy. I had alot of family worked and retired from the TB hospital. I do believe the Kennedys you are talking about are distant relatives from Whitesboro.
Maybe some day you can Visit. My Aunt had lived away for the last 50 years and came back to see the old hospital last year. She was a Nurse at the TB hospital. She is now 82 years old.

I went to school with Genevea and John's kids, and yes they are from Whitesboro, she is a wonderfuly sweet lady. John passed away a few years back, but she seems to be doing well.

I talk with her daughter Melinda every once in awhile and will let her know how well you thought of her mother, it is amazing that after all of these years you remember the kindness of a nurse. Thank you for sharing.

Peggy I am absolutely floored that you would know these people. I beg you to let them know of me. Genevea and her daughter will remember me. I understood that at the time I was the youngest person ever admitted too that TB hospital. As I had Histoplasmosis of the lungs, I had two Mexican doctors that treated me with the 1st drug ever used to treat it sucessfully . I have a 9 year old boy and it was 50 years ago this week that I was 9. As I was not suppose to live, I got lots of presents and except for being sick was having a great time. It was years later that I realized that my brother and sisters mom and dad was'nt having a good time. We where very poor and they did'nt git much for Christmas My mother is 82 and lives in Grove .All is well Dad died in 1982 Thank You very much robert

I am sorry I have bad news, I got the wrong Kennedys, when someone said the one's in Whitesboro, I thought foresure it was them because of the way you described them. I called my friend Melinda and her mom's name is LaVeta (I always called her mrs. Kennedy), married to John Kennedy, who did do maintenance at the VA hospital, but she will be seeing her Mom tomorrow and will ask her if she knew Geneva, I told her that it is important for you to get in contact with them, so we can only hope for the best. So sorry to get your hopes up, but we will keep trying.

melinda asked her mom today and she does not have a Geneva in the family, but she said that there is anothe Kennedy family that live in Buffalo Valley and maybe they would know. I think that my GM was a patient at the TB Sanitorium in the early 1940's. Does anyone know where I can the archive patient records?

There is a lady in Tulsa who's mother was there in 1939 I have her address but will have to get permission before I can give it to you-- she knows where to go for alot of history on the place. she pasted some sites on to me, but I'll have to go back though some of my e mails

I am trying to find out if my Grandmother was a patient here in 1944. Do you know where there may be some records?
